Maybe the reporters would get more support if they would do something like ask their local politicians real questions, such as this one for Romer or Groff:
With Google having a keen interest in new mobile spectrums I would differently want the iphone mobi users clicking into my phone website. For example if I want to know the Colorado Rocky's baseball score is I could TEXT message IDT Rocky for the latest score for a fee? Every penny could be used for the company plus deals with mobi phone providers could have IDT preloaded in their Denver phones. Imagine 20 thousand subscribers for mobi news for $3.00 that's $60,000 should be English Spanish
One thing has to be clear is the Rocky news is now going to be on the World wide web as in they need to do "World" coverage which can be done with a "Small" staff. I think the fee isn't that steep many news sites lets you read a paragraph if you want the whole story you have to play for it. Rocky could have photographers taking Hollywood pics one picture could be worth millions which could be used for staff & equipment. For those who doesn't want to pay I would divert them to a ad site.
And if I may add, I am not in journalism (or have any member in journalism). I am a subscriber.
With the Seattle PI shutting down tomorrow (Hearst is going Online only starting Weds) and several others next, it will be interesting to see how newspapers adapt to the technology and distribution. And to see if the Rocky staff (or PI staff) can make Online work. I hope so.
News isn't free. someone has to gather the news, and they are paid. most free news web content is from wire services (who pay the reporters) and are more national in focus. AP is not going to carry city council meetings or follow a local story from beginning to end (like the Colorado Historical Museum attempt to move into the Civic Center for example) Littwin correctly once pointed out that current online news sources is feeding national wire or collecting various news sources to a site.
Why pay for news that's free everywhere else? Sounds like a bad idea to me. If it's good, then people will read it,, if they read it, they'll advertise. Right?
InDenver Times doesn't do it for me either. How about Denver Times, Denver Chronicle, something that says, news. InDenver times sounds more like a tourist travel pamphlet at the holiday inn.
Would Scripps oppose any use of the word Rocky? I really miss the local and business coverage of the Rocky. Post is ads and wire service snippets.
I wish the Rocky staff the best of luck in this new venture - I truly hope that it helps keep the spirit alive for years to come. My stepfather was a reporter for the Rocky for over 20 years. I was blessed to be surrounded by gifted and charismatic journalists most of my life. May the tradition live on !
Great promo, edits, song- the feeling of anticipating something good. The voice of aesthetic & arts, breaking news, and local events before they happen is what we need. Pulp relies on the Wire, but use your own voices. Remember when Steve Jobs broke the mold of beige boxes & went with Ives' revolutionary move to translucent colors? That's what you can do. Use the newest technology you can. Inform, excite, make it interactive. It's what people want today. We want to be a part of this. Go go Go!
I'm not impressed--and slack on the inspiration. Sounds like more of what we get for free on in any other MSM venue. I applaud these guys for at least trying, but $5 a month for more of the same stuff? No.
There are so many things one can do with web news & hopefully mobi news. To be thriving I hope to see video news from Denver reporters around the globe D.C & our Wars. For those who don't have time to read 20 tabs of stories but want to read each one, Integrated audio likewise an mobi audio edition. Like you hop inside your truck click your phone to automatically read the stories while you're driving to work it goes into the speakers. I would want comments from readers & live storm radar webpage
News can't die. It won't die. People like this will keeps its heart beating. All journalists should join this cause and keep the news going -- print or otherwise.
I'm a proud journalism student, getting my master's degree in May. My professors keep telling me newspapers are dead. They're not dead, they're just coming back in new ways.
You guys rock. Great response (and excellent promo video) to what happened to your paper. I look forward to seeing how you rethink the news, the newsroom and local coverage.
As a freelance photojournalist for 25 years with roots in newspapers I am excited to see what you guys do with this. I am sure there are many in the country who are going to be watching and rooting you on. Good luck and I hope you succeed. Where do I subscribe?

I pledged, but if the liberal BS comes out more than usual I'll pull my funding.
Liberalsim is what killed the Rocky.

Good luck.
I don't like the name or domain name though. Did the lack of good open domain names affect the naming of the venture?
Ghettocaveman 2 years ago
Agreed about the domain name. No doubt it did... a catchier name would help, but what could it be?
