Excellent !! Thanks for posting Tehtube. After a long search I found at last the DVD "lady quartet" where this track is also played. Trombone substituted by 2 saxes but nevertheless it's all great stuff. I have no preference, it is music as music is ment to happen !!!
No. One 142 leslie, but with special controls. Built in modern 3 speed motor controller (slow/stop/speed) and this time Rhoda adjusted the switcher are middle=stop. She stopped this leslie in this time.
Great use of Leslie with Rhoda, Dennerlein is ok, but she tends to play in the same register, seems she always dials up 888 000 000 and percussion, or maybe thats just me... lol
Rhoda Scott is my favorite jazz Hammond organist. Her technique and musicianship is remarkable. The only jazz organist out there today who really PLAYS the pedalboard like a classical organist.
@organdude44 jazz organists don't normalls play basslines with the pedals, just use them to give an extra punch with the bass lines they should be playing in their left hand.
da AHM ... that was incrdible!! Just stumbled upon it as a YouTube offering "you might be interested' ... now, I just GOTTA find everything this SMOKIN trio has laid down!
Man, this gals hot on the Hsmmond, and incredibly great kicking the pedals! It was a real treat listening to this and watching her feet. Makes me wish I still had the pedals for my B3
what a wonderful trombone solo! the trombone is not my favorite instrument for jazz solos, but this one has changed my perspective. Her tone is warm, and she tells a story through the phrasing.
She is amazing, especially that she's so good in the feet. Yet, this would be nothing to a classically trained organist. For example, Middleshulte's fugue for pedals.
Two different animals, not much point in comparing. Let's see a classically trained organist swing like this. But if you want to see jazz organists with crazy feet, look at Defrancesco or Dennerlein.
I've learned a lot from transcribing JD's solos. He's a very linear player. OTOH, Larry Goldings is very non-linear, and in a way, more difficult to ape.
I am a Hammond player also . . XB-3M . . and love a great organ ensemble . . your trio is very nice. I had a Trombone,Drums,Organ (Lowrey w/ Leslie) in early 60's. Trombone works so great with organ. Kudos, Lanny Davis
yes i too, had a group featuring myself on yamaha yc45 d with bass pedals and 850 leslie tenor and bass troms and vocal drums what a groove we played mostly standards at sydney locations in the early '80s oh the troms used to vocal also
i have just commenced my 80th year in music commencing with piano and organ at churchwhich required both heel and toe to play the pedal organ this wonderful player gets her sustain from the correct touch and release of the pedals i have just acquired a new computer and am enjoying finding such treasures as Rhoda Scott and her talented groups
Rhoda you are the greatest female on a Hammond by far.Just love this peice who wrote it?I heard of you in Switzerland when I did a concert at the orgalserium.Sorry to hear of your sad loss.
My A100 is exceptional good sounding B3 from 1961, not added string bass. This video i little bit compressed the bass range. But Rhoda more played parallel the bass line with left hand and foot.
Normaly the organbass players are using the parallel tecnich, but I was wonder about the sustain since she dont seem to use the parallel playing very much in this piece.
Btw-A100 is a A100 and not a B3. Inside they are the same but outside is different.
I think the A100 is a great Hammond with the reverb and less kilos compare to the B3 and C3(not to mention the RT-3)
correct pedal technique is applied by heel and toe along with electronics such as reverb. this talented artist has always featured bare foot pedal playing from her earliest contributions 1980 and through discipline and hard work the sustain effect is there to stay....try it yourself play a c scale heel the naturals and toe the sharps/flats....more info if required?
correction....the sustain is actually hammond reverb assisted by accurate heel and toe pedalling and left hand broken chord(arpeggiated)paralleling pedal notes....phew and a lot of discipline.....
Washington DC area, original family roots are in the Richmond area from what I know. Man, listening to this performance again makes me want to applaud the solos even though they can't hear me!!! Way to go ladies!!!!
Rhoda Scott's lived in France for years. There are many American jazz players over there. It's a much more appreciative audience over there, day-in, day-out. Barbara Dennerlein doesn't play here often for the same reason.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
But Rhoda- Can you play the piano?? Jimmy Smith could play the piano like you would not believe!! Even Oscar Peterson would bow to him! PS: I bet you can't play it backward like the KING OF THE B3!!!!!!!!!!!
