When I was in High School ( Maury High), my Black Studies Class bought the rights to show this film at the River Theater. We showed the film for two or three weeks. It is a great film. It has the feel of me growing up in Enfield, North Carolina in the 60s.

@1nativeaustintexan Not sure what you point is. Were you being kind to Mr. Winfield, or mean? How were you supposed to tell he was gay? Should he have swished around with a limp wrist, wearing high heels and a feathered boa? We would be better of if we could all stop thinking in stereotypes. Most gay people cannot be identified as homosexual by their appearance or their actions, and some people who exhibit "gay" characteristics are in fact straight.

Don, you don't have to defend Paul because he was openly gay and his partner Charles Gillan, Jr. is buried with Paul. They were together for 30 years and Charles died in 2002, 2 years before Paul died. Just wanted to clear up the gay or not gay debate. Regardless of what he did in his bedroom he was an excellent actor. The guy who played Ike in this movie is actually blues legend Taj Mahal. He's on youtube, check out Taj Mahal and Devah Mahal his daughter. They sing together!

The greatest movie ever made. Everything was perfect about it. Winfield , Tyson & the kids should've won every award possible...even the dog deserved several awards. My heart still skips a beat when they shoot 'Sounder' at the start of the film.
