Granted it is nice to know how to trap but I do not hunt I do not believe in hunting for fun only for survival. Which is why we have 4 wheelers and a decent property in the mountains.
@killgroy About half of my family is like you too. They eat meat, they just don't like killing animals and eating them. Plus most don't like the gamey taste. I love that taste, myself.
@AllAlaskan907 I'd say it's the other way around. The taste correlates more through the diet of the animal. When I trap squirrel near pecan trees, they taste a lot different than the ones living off of acorns. When my family slaughters a range-fed steer, it tastes a lot different than the lot fed ones. Diet is the key.

@Heavyb2u yes, the diet does have a big effect the animal but I know from experience that if you do not handle the meat properly it will be gamey, that is one reason why if you soak wild meat ins alt water it helps pull out the gamy flaver so it doesnt taste as gamey. For example, I have had moose from the same exact area both spike forks and one was put up and hung in a cooler at 36f for 3 weeks and was not gamey at all the other was butchered and froze the day after and was very gamey.
This trap was used in Vietnam. From what I hear, they modified their animal traps for humans when they went to war. They would also defecate on the spikes to insure the victim would get sick and die. Being that the whole is small, only a human will loose balance on this trap. you would probably need a rectangle big enough for both front legs to fall into if you want to catch a big four legged animal. This is a man Trap.

Granted it is nice to know how to trap but I do not hunt I do not believe in hunting for fun only for survival. Which is why we have 4 wheelers and a decent property in the mountains.

@AllAlaskan907 I'd say it's the other way around. The taste correlates more through the diet of the animal. When I trap squirrel near pecan trees, they taste a lot different than the ones living off of acorns. When my family slaughters a range-fed steer, it tastes a lot different than the lot fed ones. Diet is the key.

@Heavyb2u yes, the diet does have a big effect the animal but I know from experience that if you do not handle the meat properly it will be gamey, that is one reason why if you soak wild meat ins alt water it helps pull out the gamy flaver so it doesnt taste as gamey. For example, I have had moose from the same exact area both spike forks and one was put up and hung in a cooler at 36f for 3 weeks and was not gamey at all the other was butchered and froze the day after and was very gamey.

This trap was used in Vietnam. From what I hear, they modified their animal traps for humans when they went to war. They would also defecate on the spikes to insure the victim would get sick and die. Being that the whole is small, only a human will loose balance on this trap. you would probably need a rectangle big enough for both front legs to fall into if you want to catch a big four legged animal. This is a man Trap.

I can see having several nearby each other will make the quadra legged animals get caught more easier as they would have their other legs melting into the trap.
I think, you set it behind a slight log or something to make them jump over. Wait days for the deer to get nearby and try to scare the deer in that general direction. Possibly, having more than several, more like 100s of em in the area. Just make sure you have an energy drink or 20..
