En 1958, à l'expo de Bruxelles,j'ai vu et entendu les Troubadours du roi Baudouin, j'avais 11ans et j'en garde un merveilleux souvenir. Les entendre me ravi.Michèle C.
Jimmy Page recommends Missa Luba in the February 2010 issue of Mojo magazine. I grew up with the record in my house. My dad, who's a good 49 years older than me, tried to get me to listen when my age was in the single digits. I didn't get it then. Next time I visit, I'll tell him the guitarist of Led Zeppelin recommended I give Missa Luba another try and see what he says.
I heard this back in '65 and like it even more. It is a great example of liturgical blending. While retaining the Roman rite it uses local expression techniques to bring meaning to the mass. Currently, however, the local language is encouraged.
The text on the LP, as shown in this video, says these Congolese compositions are devoid of Western influence. Yeah, except they're in Latin and Greek and are parts of the Catholic Mass. Plus, the Kyrie is in 4/4 time and a major scale. Other than all of those major factors, and probably others, it's devoid of Western influence.
Thanks again malgray2, now I just need to try and find it and then pluck up the courage to watch it again-- last time was very emotional, used lots of kleenex!
I loved this Album when when I was when I was 18 yrs of age & now I am 59 yrs of age & I love it just as much as then. Can anyone give me an idea where I maybe able to buy the 1965 original CD version
Go to Amazon (on the web), search Missa Luba - it's still in print on CD, the original version recorded in 1958 and released in the US in 1965, although Wikipedia mentioned they may have left off some tracks from the original LP, on the CD release.
Of course, the CD was not in print when this song was posted to YouTube, so the original poster is correct, it wasn't availble on CD (atleast in USA), until 2008.
The most amazing Mass ever. I love all the European Mass settings as well (of course), but this one has something different to it. A sense of humanity, perhaps? While the European settings often make one think of a choir of angels, this one makes me think of the whole of mankind and how we can and should praise and bless God with everything we've got.
I used to play this album every Sunday morning on our hi-fi when I lived in Manhattan in the early mid-60s, and still
have it in storage although I gave my turntable away a few
years ago. I mentioned it to a friend who lived in MN and she
said that she used to listen to that lp too. The innocence of the voices still make me tear-up. o listen to Missa Luba is to be transported.... and to believe all's right in the world. Thanks 4 putting it on Youtube. Glad to hear there's a cd now.
I have the original LP. Time after time I listen to this version of Kyrie, and the versions of hundreds of choir groups around the world and none match this version. Absolutely beautiful.
If I recall correctly, this was played at the end of the movie, "The Singing Nun." I also once heard it at an opening exhibit of African art at a museum. This, as part of the Missa Luba, is, in my opinion, enculturation at its best--blending the Roman liturgy with African music.
My 9th grade English teacher played this for us in class and I was so moved I had to buy the album. It has since been lost and I couldn't remember the name of it. Thanx you so much. I am 61 yrs old and have carried this song in my heart.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! i used to listen to Missa Luba when i was 15 and was never able to find the album again! this is it...the original, it's beautiful, thank you!
I have looked high and low for this. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. This is heavenly music and no attempt to reproduce it has come close to this original.
I agree rosestephenc. . .We sang this hauntingly beautiful song in High School chorus and it's melody and words have followed me over 40 years throughout my life. It's a real experience to hear the original again.
Absolutely one of the most moving pieces of music ever!

Yeah...that's why I'm checkin'this out....
althougfh I'm open to all kinds of music,I'm not yet convinced,
It says something about Page's open mind that he apreciated this in '65, still...
I think it was more because of it's curiosity value,as he more or less admitted.
