I heard one version of Peter Gunn with Roy Buchanan that brought tears to my eyes. I have never heard it since damn it. The rest of the band was tight and Roy just played right over them until you had to beg for mercy.

The guy was over the top! I saw him numerous times in and around Pittsburgh during the mid/ late '70's as his producer, then, Jay Reich, was from the Steel City. In person, I have not...before or since..seen any one command the guitar as well as he did. One time stands out...he played slide...using a switchblade...after the encore finished, he flipped "Nancy" over..and stuck the blade in her wooden backside!

It was in 1978 or 1980 that I first read, in the Chicago Reader I think, that Roy Buchanan was the greatly undervalued master of the electric guitar. Back then the fellow had cut only 2-3 vinyl LPs that had not sold particularly well. He needed a day job and played only in a suburban DC roadhouse on Friday & Saturday evenings. IMO, he also looks like a college prof, not like a rock star. Dozens of wannabes are dead or burned out. Roy soldiers on.
