  • I heard one version of Peter Gunn with Roy Buchanan that brought tears to my eyes. I have never heard it since damn it. The rest of the band was tight and Roy just played right over them until you had to beg for mercy.

  • A legend

  • This is the first song I ever saw Roy play live when I saw him in the 80's- I still haven't fully recovered! RIP- we will never see his like again.

  • @42treg I can understand why you never quite recovered from hearing and seeing this monster musician!

  • I saw him years ago on two occasions. The second time I had the opportunity to talk with him at length. He was a real good guy.

  • @macplumber im jealous!

  • The Master of the Telecaster!

  • Thanks Guy H. MN. Thanks for hippen me to him 35 years ago!!!!

  • and his fingers never leave his hand

  • @maxeexam well said bro...thats just some SICK playin there...unquestionably one of the best...

  • Great job on a great tune! Roy Buchanan was a one of the best as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan. Ya... Eddie Van Halen is a one trick pony

  • different

  • The Thing that amazes me is guys like Roy Buchanan and Chet Atkins never look like they are workin Hard ! They are so smooth and effortless! Like the guitar and the Guitarist are one entity.

  • @bkeay100 Glad you mentioned Chet. Lotta picker in Roy for all those R&R fans that don't know. That's why he can play anything. Period.

  • I think Buchanan among Guilmour Page Hendrix Clapton steve vai Satriani and some others i dont remember right now are the best guitar players ever with electric gutar. god bless the blues

  • impresionante madre mia

  • Hendrix, Roy Buchanan, Gilmour.... Listen and learn!

  • eff eddie, this is a badass guitar player...wow...

  • Eddie Van Who?

  • This is definitely the version to use if they ever remake the TV program.

  • i think Roy, Eddie VH and Page are all about 10 times the musician most people are or could ever hope to be. They all kinda rule at different things so its hard to really say better..I love what this guy and Jim campilongo do with a tele. so cool. For whatever thats worth. Rock on.

  • Peter Gunn theme performed by the master of the Telcaster - Roy Buchanan!

  • DAMN! I can't get smooth streaming on this. BUMMER!! GOT IT NOW!!!!

  • DAMN! I can't get smooth streaming on this. BUMMER!!

  • Fuck!!!

  • R.I.P. Roy

  • The guy was over the top! I saw him numerous times in and around Pittsburgh during the mid/ late '70's as his producer, then, Jay Reich, was from the Steel City. In person, I have not...before or since..seen any one command the guitar as well as he did. One time stands out...he played slide...using a switchblade...after the encore finished, he flipped "Nancy" over..and stuck the blade in her wooden backside!

  • It was in 1978 or 1980 that I first read, in the Chicago Reader I think, that Roy Buchanan was the greatly undervalued master of the electric guitar. Back then the fellow had cut only 2-3 vinyl LPs that had not sold particularly well. He needed a day job and played only in a suburban DC roadhouse on Friday & Saturday evenings. IMO, he also looks like a college prof, not like a rock star. Dozens of wannabes are dead or burned out. Roy soldiers on.

  • @alnot01 Roy's playing is great, but he's just as dead as the rest of 'em. 1988 R.I.P.

  • @nora22000 : You are right and I stand corrected. Moreover, he was found hung in a jail cell where he had spent the night after being booked for a domestic dispute. It was ruled a suicide, but his friends dispute that.

  • @alnot01 man this guy can play! roy is probably the greatestt unknown guitarist who never really got recognized! his tone and skill is just incredible! along with danny gatton and scotty anderson these three guys are my favorites! how about it!

  • in case you were wondering was truly freakin cool ..this is.

  • A rock hard answer to those who like to chase after fancy electronics. Pure technic~

  • Compare to Dick Dale's take. Roy sounds like he's from outer space!

  • SWEEETTTTT !!!!!

  • When some obnoxious guitar player starts bragging about his talent just put on some roy buchanan. ANY Roy Buchanan cut available should do nicely.

    That should quiet them down.

  • @catman306 if it doesn't, they aren't listening....

  • @catman306 Good plan!

  • :o Is Roy the first who ever tap :o :o :o :o ??? When was this live?

  • And there you have it, now go play it.....

  • wow

  • whaa?

  • What Year?

  • Roy Buchanan

  • @nakadashi19631 You can say that again!

  • Roy is definitely one of the most under-rated guitar slingers that ever plugged in.

  • Oh my ""God"!!! Holy shit can that man play! I don't think I ever heard this...how sad for me, eh? I just want to give a billion tons of props to Roy, and tell everyone out there to listen to this man! It should be required listening for grades 3-12...we can let the little ones get used to it before making it required...:) Again, my thanks and gratitude to you Roy...to everyone else---just listen!

  • Roy Buchanan........the right hand of God on guitar!

RIP Roy you were never truly appreciated.....but thank you for the music you left behind

  • Was Roy actually sober at this gig? Unbelievable.

  • ....

  • One of the greatest-EVER. It doesnt get any better....

  • He Is a GUITAR GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The first ten seconds might have been "Peter Gunn",....? The rest was just musical masterbation.... GIVE ME A BREAK....!!!!

  • Sounds like a ton of echo to me.

  • @wickedtothemisty

No, just take reverb on your amp and put at max and you'll get the same effect he's gettin in this vid.. Remember he only has his Fender 43 guitar and with his amp thts all folks!

  • holy shit!!! WOW....this guy's amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • holy shit

  • nu ma pot satura de aceasta melodie a lui roy

  • what could have been so bad that someone would fuckin kill themself?

  • He hit bottom and didn't get up. God bless him...

  • can roar like a lion and sing like a bird

    a Heroic Man

    a Nice Man

  • the lights went into the camera at 1:03 lol

  • Good performeance somewhat marred by the heavy 1980s excessive drum and bass sound.

  • for not being a spring chicken roy is on point damn

  • Pure talent from the late great Roy Buchanan

  • wow..jimmy page totally copied Roy...damn i would too..this is the first time ive seen or heard Roy, it sounds just like live Jimmy..only better...wow..

  • Harvey Mandel was a tappin' a way back too.

  • This the Shizzellllll! Right up there with Bonamassa, Vai, Gallagher Zack, possibly the best of all.

  • Lol, those guys learned at the knee of Roy, they listened closely to everything he ever recorded and have yet to touch his best works.

  • Great Version. I was lucky enough to see him on the same bill as Johnny Winter and Dickey Betts in the mid-eighties.

  • N that's coming from someone who has heard 90% the gig's he has ever played.

At his best he makes this entire show look like a practice session.

  • Don't get me wrong... this is a great performance, but really doesn't do his capabilities justice, he tended to play much better with smaller crowds.

  • I could practice till my fingers bleed (and have) I will never be this GREAT!!! So few real deals anymore, Roy is the real deal!

  • yes you can anyone can just got to have a creative mind man and pratice :D

  • thanks pal, I still love to play!

  • SUCK ON THAT EDDIE VAN HALEN

  • made me lol

  • Van Halen Could Do This..Jimi Hendrix..The Talking Heads..Emerson, Lake, and Palmer you know...a friend of mine had his door unlocked at a light and the heist was...(at gunpoint)'Take Me To Philadelphia...aka'Had a Gun..Will Travel!...TAXI!

  • @jbassman666 eddie totally stole two handed tapping off roy

  • @assmansicksicksick Roy Buchanan is alright but he plays too many high notes - that's showing off! Truth is, you really don't need guitar on this song at all as my new Peter Gunn video apply demonstrates.

  • @number1saxophone your a pompous douche this man had more musical talent in his pinky than you have in your entire body

  • @number1saxophone - Oh my God... I watched your video, you have a lot of nerve picking at what Roy did here.... you butchered that song.

  • @58buggers This person is just jealous of the fact that I'm in a kick ass band. Either that or they're just the type that likes to stir up trouble here on youtube.

  • @jbassman666

how the hell can you compare this to eddie van halen?

  • @Golfshooter

I remember now who Eddie Van Halen is,, He's the guy that said Jimmy Page played like he had 10 broken fingers.

  • @jbassman666 EDDIE SUCK ON THAT ,,,REAL HARD

  • @jbassman666 it would give him an erruption

  • @jbassman666 i think roy is eddies grandpa XD

  • Hendrix's version was just him playing around and joking in the studio. It was never meant to be released.

  • Is this available on a DVD?

  • i love how he's toying with the melody hitting points and then dancing around the theme. check out the Hellecasters' version of this song you guys will like it if you like this.

  • I totally agree that Page was way overrated as well as Peter Townsend. This is guitar playing.

  • I don't consider Page overrated... Anyone who made it big doesn't have to be considered overrated just because they found success. He's a great guitarist. It's Roy on the other hand who is completely underrated

  • really how a guitar should be played. just do what the fuck you want. nobody will hear anything new until you throw the rules out the window

  • Comment removed

  • Interesting twist to the song. At least an original cover instead of just a copy. Like it or not, it's art.

  • page? he's pathetic next to roy buchanan and danny gatton! he's sloopy and out of tune well over rated

  • @waycrosswaif

    bullshit

  • @xXAngelaMerkelXx its fact page is sloppy as hell, good songwriter but roy buchanan is much better on guitar. Ask Jeff Beck

  • @waycrosswaif

i dont need to ask jeff fucking beck about my own opinion on the music i listen too

his music(jeff becks) sounds liek shit ussually anyyways

  • @waycrosswaif What's the point in running down fine musicians? It's not a football game.

  • Only Page and Buchanan were doing anything like this on stage back between 1969 and 1973. They influenced everyone.

  • @toncuz ..........oh, contrarily, my friend....there were others with wondrous skillz....like Jeff Beck.....Alvin Lee...Elvin Bishop.....yet....I agree that ROY was doing his amazing stuff before ANYone....and like no one since...

  • Yup...Roy was doing the stuff Eddie Van Halen took credit for TEN YEARS LATER

  • I love Roy but he did two handed tappin after Eddie, this is from '85. He wasn't doing that back in the day. Volume swells and crazy harmonics, yes but not the two handed tapping that Eddie help revolutionize. More importantly, how come Roy DVD's are so hard to find!

  • Hendrix was tapping before Eddie

  • so was frank marino

  • You can add Angus Young in there too

  • which effect uses in videos?

  • The Hendrix version of the Peter Gunn Theme pales by comparison.

  • hey does anyone know the tabs for this song. i would really love to play this.

also, i just love the way roy plays, hes not like jumping around the stage, he just stands there and delivers great music! well done!

  • Here, you see and hear a genuine guitar god. Roy's story is also -- yet another --blues man tragedy.

  • Take that all you sax players!

  • Nice tapping, take a lesson EVH!

  • sorry, i guess i should've said boring as compared 2 the jimi hendrix version, in my humble opinion of course. mr. buchanan truly is a great talent.

  • was there a hendrix version to this???, or are you talkin about hey joe?

  • yes, an out take which was released after his death on the war heroes lp. its here on you tube, just search hendrix peter gunn. also, check out the remo 4 version for some real rock history.

  • Can't you hear so many styles in Buchanan's play in this piece? It is boring? - man, Hendrix plays all the time the same style in this piece. You have plenty of different play by Buchanan here. Can't belive it that you are wrote you comment seriously.

  • "short fuse" this song is called isn't it ?

I know it has the peter gun bass line but im pretty sure he calls it short fuse.

  • u might be right but im sure short fuse sounds more like killing floor by howling wolf and hendrix etc :) but u might be right god knows lol :) he's great isn't he? :) old roy :D amazing

  • nah short fuse is like the famous chicago riff pumped up this is defo peter gunn.

  • Greatest noise-maker who ever lived!

  • have mercy! this is excellent!!! hats off.....

  • that Tele is SCREAMING !!

  • terrific ...

  • Does it get better than Roy......Idon't think so he died so young

  • Ummmmmmmmmm . . . Holy Friggin' Freakin' FUCK! Jesus Christ does he Rock here (well shit; everywhere)

  • monster!

  • a freakin' maniac !!! diggin' it bigtime !!!

  • It's a little bit funny when people here on youtube write it's a shame that James Burton don't get kudos as being as good as he is. Don't get me wrong as I love James. Anyway, these people never ever mention the great Roy Buchanan who, I swear, got less kudos here. Damn strange. Thanx for post!

  • amen to that brotha!! Roy is swept under the rug too much. he was such a killer guitar player. just listen to how psychedelic his tones could be!! he was shits... never mentioned among the greats... plus, he played a lot of teles...love it!

  • he rocks

  • Questo e far parlare la chitarra !!!

  • Fucking killer song! Is that Chuck Norris clapping in the striped shirt?

  • Thumbpick,you are crazy...yeah

  • reminds me of the movie Back to the Future when the drummer in the group just kinda gets left behind and hes jammin hard.

  • haha yeh :)

  • Jimmy Page did some tapping in 69, Steve Hackett did in 73. Eddie just made it his own.

  • GREAT JOB!!

  • AMAZING!

  • saw roy many times including a few nights before his death. one of the greatest guitar players ever

  • solo applausi

    numero 1

  • Honestrate

Youtube is for everyone and not just English speakers!!! Have some manners yourself

  • hey, roy's music is of a universal language. you have no manners, ingrate !!!!!!

  • I want to use this in my Reality Show openener...AWESOME!!!!!!!! DAM!!!!!

  • One of the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!As for hanging himself in jail. never bought the story still don't! Make a good book and movie. Hear me Hollywood....

  • one word....BBBBAAAAADDDDAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  • the drummer plays like a hummer but roy has a cool style....

  • FANTASTIC.

  • At 1.49 he's doing a Van Halen. I didn't expect to see any tapping from Roy Buchanan!

  • are you kidding, he invented tapping!

  • I hope to God you're not talking about Eddie Van Halen. I feel sorry for you if you are.

  • roy was tapping, screaming and reeling while eddie van halen was crapping in his diapers. roy would have made van halen's ears bleed in a head cutting contest. eddie is over synthesized pap. he stole all licks from jeff beck. toy caldwell of marshall tucker would have blistered eddie's ass too!!!!!!!!

  • Well, 1988.

  • Thanks for putting this on here. My dad turned me on to this guy. He told me the Rolling Stones asked him to join them after Brian Jones died and he turned them down. He hung himself in a jail cell a couple of years ago. RIP Roy.

  • its amazin how many people are there to watch an instrumental show.

  • good old school stuff - still rocks today.

  • This man had the huge talent.

  • That's gold, Lee.

  • Looks like he had to sweat that one a little, but man-o-man was he workin that Tele.Roy rocks! Thankx Lee and keep um commin YouTube!!
