  • "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after"

  • hahahaha the little bug @ 2:59 xDD soo cute

  • I think the moral of this song is we all have the same questions. :~)

  • Leo played me this song...I am forever in his debt :) x

  • m. ward is a genius.

  • I like the song and translation.

  • Seen him live the guys amazing

  • The meaning isn't always in words.

  • really love this song and video!

  • 86 people don't know what to do with the pieces of a broken heart.

  • @SamxChan One person is stretching it thin.

  • Once there was a mountain. On top of the mountain sit a temple. In the temple crouched an old monk and a little monk. The old monk said to the little monk: Once there was a mountain. On top of the mountain sit a temple. In the temple crouched an old monk and a little monk. The old monk said to the little monk: Once there was a mountain...

  • when youre going through hell...you just gotta keep going...you ask so much that you forget to live...it is true that you just have to learn to let go and that in itself shows courage...gotta have more faith in ones-self and when you do need to ask a question dont be afraid of the answer...life just happens and you learn to flow with it...you stay true to yourself even when youre lost because life has its little ways to replenish a parched soul...

  • M ward music is just majestic. and the faces (old souls) in the tree are awsome

  • This is such a great song, but the chinese subtitles don't make much sense. its so poorly done it looks to be a cut and paste job on one of these online free translation sites.....at least they should hire someone who actually reads chinese to proof read it.....oh well

  • @kornypony It doesn't matter whether or not the translation is perfect. They're not doing it to bring M. Ward to a Chinese audience.

  • @Fuhgl I'm jusy saying, if you wanna do it, might as well do it right.

  • @kornypony

Maybe that's point? In the context of the song, the older, wiser man knows better than try to teach what he's learned in life; he just explains that he did the exact same thing when he was young.

His "translation", what the other younger man understands, can't be "translated" perfectly. Hence the song title.

  • It's like a mix of question how to live life and a Budhism concept of samsara.

  • The true moral of the song is: never forget to specify the base of recursion, or you'll get an infinite regress-type of error.

  • M Ward kicks ass.

  • This video shreds anything from the VMA's.

  • You won't find super intense special effects, or nice cars, or attractive female actresses. What you find is something far greater.

  • M. Ward--simply superb.

  • the answer is, there are no answers. it is what it is and nothing more or less.

  • 85 people without taste

  • @mxcswedishfish91 We get it. There is no need to even say that...because soon enough it will become irrelevant, when more people thumbs it down.

  • That old chinese man is adorable.

  • Son introduced this song to me. Love it. Very cool. Can't get it out of my head.

Also, am I the only one who hears this similarity:

See I once was a young fool like you, afraid to do the things that I knew I had to do...

So I'm living on the air in Cincinnati, Cincinnati W-K-R-P... LOL

  • I'll tell ya what to do with the pieces of a broken heart.... glue 'em together and never look back at the hammer that broke it... either that or you could burn the pieces...

  • RUTH F. IS A BIG TALKER FROM TEXAS

  • WuUuUuuuuUUuuu!

  • @PedoLouie this is his day job.

  • 3:47 is that a fart*?! :P

  • @mrmunkyman1

    Hahahahahaha....

  • "and if life is really as short as they say, then why is the night so long?"

one of the most beautiful sentences i've ever heard in as song...

  • is this the official music video or just something you made for fun?

  • this song is very nice

  • 3:01 :)!

  • You're really missing out if you do not know of m ward & his passion for continuously writing utterly beautiful pieces like this one. I know that he has been a great influence on myself & others. Love is all around us-h.du

  • funny old man~

  • hahahaha

Free Bird!! haha, wow, i cant believe that came to mind

  • so cute!! ;-D

  • omg.. a i a retard or is this song sad?..

    yeah i know.. im retard..

  • @PixelDudePlanet Okay, well, glad I wasn't the only one who thought it was sad.

  • @LeSchellumz But it's soo deep and meaningful...

  • @PixelDudePlanet hilarious comment bro. Honestly this song means a lot to me, but it's always nice to find others who have fun with such a deep song.

  • Moral of the story: forget about the bitches and just shred.

  • @HandsomeDynamite baahaaha

  • @HandsomeDynamite - If you notice, a woman is asking an old lady what we can guess is the same thing. A combined yearning perhaps?

  • @HandsomeDynamite NOT AT ALL. Its about seeking renewal. Not many people realize M. Ward is a Christian artist. I dont think he likes to revile that to his fans, but many of his songs show the beauty of God better then I've ever seen. M. Ward has easily written some of the best music I've ever heard.

  • @KillerWickedPsycho NO YOUR INTERPRETATION IS WRONG. Seriously though, the themes set about in this song are universal and not specific to Christianity. To call him a "Christian" artist is to pigeonhole him into a category that doesn't necessarily reflect the themes found in his music. Try again.

  • @MrGrunge88 This song isn't necessarily Christian, but several of his other songs do have pretty obvious Christian themes to them.

  • @HandsomeDynamite Too bad he can't

  • ucking ick

  • They look like Zelda: Wind Waker characters. x3;;

  • @Volstreed fuck yaaa wind waker is AWSOME..ill never forget it

  • I do.

  • song is brilliant, animation is incredible, is this a real translation of chinese literature?

  • Fire bugs!

  • I always wonder: do M. Ward fans like She & Him?

  • @Janien94 I certainly do. :) Perhaps even better than Zooey Deschanel , he should sing more often.

  • @Janien94 I personally prefer M. Ward solo.

  • akuschelbedarf und keiner da jemd Lust zu chattn

  • this song is seriously like a masterpiece haha

  • One of my personal favorites. This song means a lot to me and is simply a masterpiece.

  • this is brilliant

  • Cried on the fourth listen. What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?

  • I love this<3

  • Great stuff! Especially compared to all those Zooey Deschanel videos that take up so much of his time these days

  • This song is amazing

  • cutest thing i have ever seen.

  • what a delight!

  • amazing

  • the first time i saw this i thought it was really dumb. now it is one of my favorite songs. my teacher gets kind of mad when me and the guy who sits next to me burst into song together... in this song.

  • how can this make u smile and sad at the same time?

  • i <3 this!!!

  • This is the only M. Ward song I can keep coming back to over and over again without getting board of...

  • @makewhatyoucanofme... like... 2x4'ed?

  • Real funny

  • I love M.ward

  • Is this the official video for this song? I love it!

  • i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

  • Am I the only one who finds it funny that one of the related videos to this great song is titled "Chinese children sent to fat camps"??

  • basically for me it means that when times are tough theres nothing more soothing than to repair your soul with a wild, exciting adventure or jamminfg on ur guitar!!! lol =D

  • deep deep song

  • fuck this is fresh!

  • his voice is soooo soothing lol i wanna fall asleep to this tonight <3

  • This is the most clever song and coolest video!!! EVER

  • owesome, I meet on youtube something smart and simply like that to ralely.

  • What is this drum beat called?

  • they are natural drum strokes on a snare using brushes, very nice sound.

  • Hey wait a minute... you didn't answer my question.

  • I realize your just spamming or your just stoopid but why would make a ringtone that ends mid sentence thats just dumb and not creative in anyway. I bet you didn't even listen to the song, douche.

  • see what happens...everybody has their own interpretation and that is why they'll never know God. instead of listening to God, they listen to them self. and so it goes...

  • the friend that showed me this song after i broke up got kicked up quite a few notches in my friendometer

  • This is such a cool song, the animation is priceless.

  • The bird playing the guitar at 2:56 is left-winged.

Don't see too many of them anymore.

  • @tintindwarf they died with hendrix!

  • @tintindwarf upvote 'cause im' drunk and cute observations make me happy

  • @tintindwarf have You ever seen "one" bird playing a guitar?

  • @tintindwarf, that actually made me laugh so damn hard. keep it up sir.

  • I MISS YOU JEFF!!!:'(

  • "under a tree" is a direct reference to the Buddha...if you want to bicker about the rest then talk amongst yourselves

  • how do you know?

  • @smileitsjames

How do I know? I haven't talked to M. about it and I don't think I necessarily need to.

I am an academic who has studied religion for too long.

The man under a tree is the basis of the story of theBuddha. "afraid to do what" The song is about the nature of suffering.

"how to remain in the light" is a direct religious quotation.

He asks 3 questions but the old man doesn't answer...again another Buddhist master learning kinda deal. The Koan Zen nature.

  • no its not. Buddha didn't sit under a weeping willow tree.

  • its not buddhism or taoism. The answer is music.

  • @dsleeperhold there's definitely taoism in it I think :)

  • 喜欢!

  • Great comment azurenscens. I couldn't agree more.

    : )

  • but how we drink the water?!

  • Does it truly matter whether there is a specific message that this music video is trying to convey? I think not. Take from it what you will and enjoy.

  • ya viribablooo, every time you hear a guy with a guitar singing a country song about a broken heart, you just keep telling yourself it's your secret buddhist philosophy

  • Well not every "country" song has a music video dealing with Chinese people in situations relating to Buddhist principles. It's not hard to realize even when you're not Buddhist, like me.

  • screw religion. embrace spirituality.

  • u dont know what ur saying. spirituality is a fundamental part of religion

  • but religion isn't a fundamental part of spirituality.

    : )

  • @azurenscens very wise azurenscens demonstrate your superior spirituality by not denouncing religion and i might believe you.

  • @lulec81 i am not trying to come off as superior if that is how you interpreted my comment. let me take back my comment which put down religion and apologize. although believe i made a good point which is that you do not need religion to be spiritual...cheers!

  • I totally relate to what you are saying Azurenscens. The reaction have received just demonstrates even more why I left religion and embraced spirituality.

  • glad to know that we can relate in a spiritual manner. cheers!

  • hi :) lule c81...try to look at it like this... the water is a fundamental part of the cup as it is the purpose of the cup to hold water, but is the cup a fundamental part of the water? religion is a cup that people use to tap into the flow spirituality but it is not necessary for the vessel to exist, one could simply cup their hands or dunk their entire head into the stream and drink! hope that helps... take it easy

  • Comment removed

  • thanks zokon you express yourself in good way. i choose the cup and thank God for the water. not to say ur way or anybody elses is wrong.

  • "God has no favorite religion"

  • post modernism falls to its face..

  • Spirituality can be defined as "the deepest values and meanings by which people live."

To say that a religion is necessary for that type of exploration is patently false.

  • @BanjoNaps i agree.

  • to those who dont understand this, this refers to Buddhism and Daoism

  • @viribablooo

While that's certainly a possible truth, it really limits the art to say it definitively like that: "For those of you who aren't smart enough to understand what this means, here's my interpretation." It's pretty pretentious, as art/music/poetry has meaning to everyone. You don't need to walk any of us through it, that defeats the purpose.

  • It's such a soothing song; very up-lifting. Happily filling up the soundscape; i'm really liking this.

  • hehe, i think you should listen to the lyrics.

  • BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT

  • There have been only 30 really GREAT songs since 2000, and this definitely is one of them.

  • what song is this?

  • Great song and wonderful animation!

  • wow man..... this is just SO deep... as many of you may have noticed this song totally confirms the saying; Music can sooth the savage beast, have you noticed that most, or even ALL the comments on this vid are completly intelligent, thought out, and just so plain great. M ward is slowly making this world a better place ;)

Great band, glad I finally found them...

  • That is because all the dumbasses left before getting to a comment.

  • he played this at the monsters of folk show a couple weeks ago, it was amazing! I couldn't have been happier :)

  • its the girls from the pieces of the broken heart picture at 3:23

  • Loved this!

  • the only complain about m ward must be that his records are way too short. and that's really a compliment

  • like him by himself a lot more than in "she and him"

  • ive been looking 4 this song for 3 years

  • nice

  • wow, I love this. Def. gonna look into his music now.
