Joe is my good friend, he is awesome at what he does and the best I have ever seen. This is great Joe, miss you buddy. Ill come visit when I go to Cali :) tell Rose I said Hi :)
Listen to the way the piano is mic'd / recorded. There is almost no sustain whatsoever. The attack is far too loud in relation to decay. It sounds almost like an older digital piano. Not much room reverb either very dry sounding. The point is I'm sure from the audience's perspective the sound was much more fluid and connected.
I seriously really like this! Without Chopin here and still alive, we don't exactly know how to play it to his liking, so everything is just left up to the interpretation of the pianist and this, I believe is lovely! Great Job on learning it!
Excellent. I enjoyed it very much and all critics to your rendition have nothing better to do than sit there behind their computer and complain because they don't have the skill that you have skillfully displayed.
noice. well, too staccato for my taste.. a little sustaining would have helped imo. but damn you play it better than i could for sure. especially with all that pressure. my hands get all shakey :\
Thank you so much! I agree, that piano had been played for about 30 minutes before my turn so at least one note is blatantly out of tune. I have a 1912 Mason and Hamlin model "A" and the tone is substantially better than that 1970's baldwin. I hated that thing.
Tempo is good. Partially too fast. Too much stacato. Elseway a very good performance. Keep practicing and I will be glad to see the new recording. Pls inform me when u put it here on youtube.
Good lord, I was so nervous! I almost feel like barfing just seeing myself do it. I appreciate all the criticism, good and bad. I'm happy to have 74 hundred views, not a huge number but for a man from a small town it's pretty good. That was two years ago and I will be posting an update on this so people can see how I've developed or matured musically. I hope nobody is disappointed.
To be honest the first time of hearing it, i didn't think it sounded as nice as some, but after a while it sounded unique and different (in a good way). I enjoyed it :D
Thank you, I appreciate the positive feedback. I feel like there is an idea about how it should be played that most pianists adhere to because most pianists have heard it that way throughout their life. Why shouldn't people make what they individually see out of it? I think the primary thing is to make clear phrases that anyone could distinguish, which can't be done when the performer holds the pedal down for 4 5ths of the piece. It all becomes jumbled together in a huge orgy of discord.
I've heard this played better. It's acceptable but not beautiful- if this was my first time hearing it played, I probably would not be as in love with it as I am.
By the way, after reading your replies to comments, you sound like a douche. No offense, but your interpretation is not impeccable. Try to be modest and take into consideration the criticism you recieve-- ierno, maybe it would've helped you make this piece impeccable?
I know what you mean, I feel insulted when people tell me that it wasn't good enough. I'm not wrong in the fact that 90% of the people complaining could not hold a candle to me if they tried to out do me. Let musicians develop and don't be so scathing in tearing them down. I know this piece like the back of my hand and It's disturbing when people talk about things they dont know and don't understand the work and effort that went into learning this at that point in my life.
I'm working on getting a follow up video to show how much I've learned more about this and how to do it better. Then people might give me a little respect for being devoted to what I do.
Give me a month and I can out shine you, even though my piano skills aren't great-- but too bad I'm busy with things like school & work.
I'm only attacking because you're a pompous douche :). We're giving you feedback- isn't that good? Plus, how can you "develop" if you think your performance was impeccable? There's no disrespect towards your music, it's all our opinions and what you take from it will make you either a better musician or a bitter one.
You have a deal! The thing I like about you is that your criticism is less of a personal attack but still honest and you are not being a douche : ) when you say it. Props to you my friend. I can't wait to be outshone!
the thing is cresendo and decresendo is not being followeed carefully as well as the pedals on left and right to help it ..interpretatin is not well also likely..the romantic sense on this piece becomes eh..dunno..ragtime..or??piano is not untune but its due to the camera sound arrays..
The piano was definitely out of tune. The longer this video is up the more glitches there are. Chopin invented ragtime for your information. Listen to some mazurkas. Of course I don't mean the waltz should be ragtime. I disagree with your evaluation, my interpretation is impeccable and I was extremely careful to contrast dynamics, (for you not in the know, dynamics is loud and soft). Everyone's a critic but few people know what they're talking about.
you know what, i hate fuckign losers specially dumb ones..thats why i said cresendo and decresendo t make it more easily to understand the word dynamics,, fuck sake!and i dont care who ever invented the ragtime style because on this peice the sund of piano goes alike the style of it for no reason! and you said your interpretation is impeccable, since when people criticisethemselves in a possitive was after performance?we are the one who says it not you! so dont dis agree to your viewers!twat
I love intelligent people who have such low self-esteem that they feel compelled to use 4th grade language (and spelling) to stand up for themselves and what they think. Like I say, do it better than I did and then tell me all about it. until you can, don't quit your day job. When you have the guts and the memory strength to play in front of a thousand people I will trust your judgment and ability to understand music a lot more. I'm a winner, fool.
what i want to clarify again is, "i hate the fact that dumb people who are trying to be a smart ass where basic way of communication are what they are lack off.."i can't even get the thought of what are you trying to say!all i can understand is that" im a winner fool"?di you win anything while playing?or just because you are saying that, i can play the music and think it was really nice and everyone likes it!dont think as one, and u should gather thier thought about it by not including yourself
As the performer I must say that my teacher encouraged me to use the pedal sparingly to teach me how to do the most work with my fingers. I know that the usual rendition of this piece seems to paint it to be ultra romantic. I am still learning and despite the critics I must develop my own style and will not answer to those who tell me that I did something wrong. If you feel like you can discern that I lack in intelligence, I beg you to out-do me and show me exactly where i went wrong.
I know I can't stand these versions. It's supposed to be poetic and romantic but these versions sound like I'm hopping through a corn field with a picnic basket.
I don't understand, the waltz in music is a translation from the art of dance. It is poetic, except with reasonable taste and understanding of the artistic intent.
I know...I actually got so irritated at these versions that I've actually spent a few hours a day learning it myself. I have 3 measures to go and then I'm recording it for youtube haha.
Yes, I was pedaling but not the way you hear on most other recordings. other pianists usually hold the pedal down the whole time and get mushy sound that blends it all together. I wanted to make it sound like what it is - a waltz.
Joe is my good friend, he is awesome at what he does and the best I have ever seen. This is great Joe, miss you buddy. Ill come visit when I go to Cali :) tell Rose I said Hi :)

the technique and sound are there, but it isn't very well played, because you should play it more fluently

Good technique, but with a lack of some pedaling and expression, and with poor piano sound.

I love the last note of each scale. You really kept it nice and clean, and the note rang out into the next phrase. Sweet bowtie btw xD

I don't know if its due to the fact he barely use the pedal, but I really do not like the sound he produced!

I've not studied this piece yet, but i'd used more pedal.
Btw, it is me? or the piano is clearly out of tune? Perhaps is because of the video...
