Ok so if you never played the game here's the explanation:

You are in control of a ship (in this case two) that has shields to absorb bullets. But the catch is only bullets of the same color as the shield can be absorbed as energy. The player can change what color shield the ship uses, but if the ship absorbs a different color bullet even once, it will explode.
