To me the whole costume change really shows the real change in Doctor Horrible. In the beginning, His main color scheme is white while Hammer's is black, even though he's the "villian" and Captain Hammer is the "hero", showing how really Billy/Doctor Horrible was the one you wanted to follow and believe the best in. Once he switches over to the red coat, it seems to show how he now has been somewhat tainted, with black undertones in the gloves. Ah Whedon. You horrible evil genius, you.

I think the ending was implying that the whole thing was in his head and that it didn't actually happen, that he was just posting about it on his blog which is why the whole thing ends in his empty apartment with him in his normal clothes singing with no music.

@YuumaiKalmo See, I have to disagree there. She had just seen who Hammer truly was, so she knew he wasn't a real hero after all. The problem was, in those final moments, she didn't know anyone else to turn to. Faced with death and the knowledge that the only other one she cared for was a villain, all she could turn to for comfort was a false hero. When you get down to it, that's even worse.
@Paudidawwg If you pause it at the end you can see that it actually isn't a laboratory in the background but in fact just a spice rack, few pots and pans, and a closet with cleaning supplies.

To those who think Dr. Horrible indirectly killed Penny because the death ray exploded, he didn't. When Captain Hammer punched him and the death ray dropped, something broke inside it and Dr. Horrible noticed it because he told Captain Hammer to ''wait''. i love this because 2 of my favorite actors play in it: Neil Patrick Harris one of the greates comedy actors (which you can see in th show How I met your mother) and Nathan Fillion one of the best crime actors (which one can see in Castle) and i think captain hammer a.k.a Nathan Fillion has those gloves from his Tv show before Fireflies :D
I really don't see how Penny dying was such a tragedy...I mean she was a pretty weak female character in y opinion. Sure Dr. Horrible was sad but still he's better off without her!

Dr Horrible would have run away, Penny wouldn't realise that it was Billy, Captain Hammer would have dumped her and she would have gone to Billy for help. Everything would have worked out except Dr Horrible taking over the world, which is no bad thing.

*sigh* They are both at fault. Horrible brought the gun intending to kill (but not the person who died), Hammer pulled the trigger. Sure, Horrible could probably plead Insanity and Hammer...even if he had been warned, he just lacks the mental capacity to listen. The point is, Hammer was broken and Horrible took advantage of it. The End.
Notice the red lab coat he puts on at the end... it symbolizes how he's turned from white, to red. Not to mention the gloves he puts on, looks an awful lot like captain hammer's don't they? I think it was representing how he's truly become a bad guy. His humanity seems lost, and the full darkness seems to take over. Remember, everyone has 3 layers. One on the top (Billy), one underneathe (Dr Horrible), and another similar to the top... hence the very end of the show..... like pie.
@SinisterDirector You can't say it "symbolizes" him changing from 'white' to 'red' without actually delving into the metaphor itself. His change of color is a pretty blatant representation of the blood that has stained his soul. Additionally, on the subject of layers, Dr Horrible WAS a representation of Billy, they were either the same layer or incredibly similar layers against each other. The Dr Horrible shown at the end is a new layer that was added. Thus the lowered goggles.
@TheSinaqui I'd say that Billy, in love with Penny, is the top layer, the villain Dr. Horrible, striving to fufill his ambitions (and in the end, succeeding), is the filling and then Billy again, still pining for Penny is the final layer. On the surface he is an insecure loser in love, but delve deeper then that and he's an evil genius. But deeper than that, he is an insecure loser in love. Rather than there being an extra layer. He likely wore the goggles while being ineffective too

I love how Dr. Horrible showed a lot of remorse to killing Captain Hammer, and Captain Hammer didn't even flinch at the thought. Shows who's really evil and good, doesn't it?
The way i see it, yes Dr. Horrible was a villan, but Capt. Hammer was the bad guy. had CH not know about DH's crush on Penny he would have done what I'm assuming is his "usual" was dumped her after he "whambamthankyoumama" her, thus leading Penny to be heart broken and going to Billy for comfort. And if you read the comic book it shows that Penny had a crush on DH (SOOOOOOO middle school style) which maybe have lead to them finding what they both want/need in each other.
it is all captain hammers falt because billy tried to warn him that something would go wrong if hammer tried to use billy try to stop him so hammer is at falt for a) trying to murder billy insteed of letting the justice system and b) for not heeding billys warning
Okay. Yes it's sad that Penny's last words are "Captain Hammer will save us.", but that last scene. Those last two words. With Dr. Horrible sitting in his lab as Billy. That means so much more. It means that although he seems rather content albeit sad that penny is dead, as Dr. Horrible, he can at least channel it into anger at something or someone. What's he going to do as Billy? Billy no longer has a purpose but to remind Horrible of the past.

JESUS! I've watched the whole thing through over thirty times now and EVERY TIME at the end when he's just sitting there.. in the sad little hoodie.. just dejectedly saying the last two lines of the song.. I burst into sobs... EVERY TIME!!! God this is a masterpiece.
so the ending to this is Penny died. So now he has nothing to wait or hope for. So he goes off and fulfills his dream of becoming the evil villain he wanted to be. And the whole 'Doctor Horrible' part of him takes over. And Captain Hammer is too depressed to even try anymore. OMG... I love this movie :3
To everyone blaming Dr. Horrible for Penny's death, would you call the person who brought the gun, or the person who pulled the trigger the murderer? Captain Hammer killed Penny, albiet with Dr. Horrible's creation.
@mynameismatt2010 He's still indirectly responsible, because if he hadn't brought the gun she would still be alive. His decision to try and kill Captain Hammer ultimately leads to Penny's death. That isn't to say Captain Hammer isn't at fault as well, but Billy has plenty of reason to blame himself.
@LordSothe That type of inconsistant logic is what drives friends and families of murdered loved one's insane, the idea that had they personally done something different the result wouldn't have been the same. Sometimes it's actually true, but regardless of that fact that are not to blame.

If something lke that happened in real life Captain Hammer would be charged with manlaughter and Dr. Horrible probably wouldn't be implicated in the investigation of Penny's death.

I just don't understand how you can say Horrible isn't responsible since he didn't know Penny would die in his attack, but then blame Hammer when he didn't either and wasn't trying to harm anyone other than Horrible.

i love this because 2 of my favorite actors play in it: Neil Patrick Harris one of the greates comedy actors (which you can see in th show How I met your mother) and Nathan Fillion one of the best crime actors (which one can see in Castle) and i think captain hammer a.k.a Nathan Fillion has those gloves from his Tv show before Fireflies :D

What would have happened if the freeze ray didn't work?
Dr Horrible would have run away, Penny wouldn't realise that it was Billy, Captain Hammer would have dumped her and she would have gone to Billy for help. Everything would have worked out except Dr Horrible taking over the world, which is no bad thing.

*sigh* They are both at fault. Horrible brought the gun intending to kill (but not the person who died), Hammer pulled the trigger. Sure, Horrible could probably plead Insanity and Hammer...even if he had been warned, he just lacks the mental capacity to listen. The point is, Hammer was broken and Horrible took advantage of it. Notice the red lab coat he puts on at the end... it symbolizes how he's turned from white, to red. Not to mention the gloves he puts on, looks an awful lot like captain hammer's don't they? I think it was representing how he's truly become a bad guy. His humanity seems lost, and the full darkness seems to take over. Remember, everyone has 3 layers. One on the top (Billy), one underneathe (Dr Horrible), and another similar to the top... hence the very end of the show..... like pie.

@SinisterDirector You can't say it "symbolizes" him changing from 'white' to 'red' without actually delving into the metaphor itself. His change of color is a pretty blatant representation of the blood that has stained his soul. Additionally, on the subject of layers, Dr Horrible WAS a representation of Billy, they were either the same layer or incredibly similar layers against each other. The Dr Horrible shown at the end is a new layer that was added. Thus the lowered goggles.

@TheSinaqui I'd say that Billy, in love with Penny, is the top layer, the villain Dr. Horrible, striving to fufill his ambitions (and in the end, succeeding), is the filling and then Billy again, still pining for Penny is the final layer. On the surface he is an insecure loser in love, but delve deeper then that and he's an evil genius. But deeper than that, he is an insecure loser in love. Rather than there being an extra layer. He likely wore the goggles while being ineffective too

The way i see it, yes Dr. Horrible was a villan, but Capt. Hammer was the bad guy. had CH not know about DH's crush on Penny he would have done what I'm assuming is his "usual" was dumped her after he "whambamthankyoumama" her, thus leading Penny to be heart broken and going to Billy for comfort. And if you read the comic book it shows that Penny had a crush on DH (SOOOOOOO middle school style) which maybe have lead to them finding what they both want/need in each other.

Okay. Yes it's sad that Penny's last words are "Captain Hammer will save us.", but that last scene. Those last two words. With Dr. Horrible sitting in his lab as Billy. That means so much more. It means that although he seems rather content albeit sad that penny is dead, as Dr. Horrible, he can at least channel it into anger at something or someone. What's he going to do as Billy? Billy no longer has a purpose but to remind Horrible of the past.

so the ending to this is Penny died. So now he has nothing to wait or hope for. So he goes off and fulfills his dream of becoming the evil villain he wanted to be. And the whole 'Doctor Horrible' part of him takes over. And Captain Hammer is too depressed to even try anymore. OMG... I love this movie :3

To everyone blaming Dr. Horrible for Penny's death, would you call the person who brought the gun, or the person who pulled the trigger the murderer? Captain Hammer killed Penny, albiet with Dr. Horrible's creation.

@mynameismatt2010 He's still indirectly responsible, because if he hadn't brought the gun she would still be alive. His decision to try and kill Captain Hammer ultimately leads to Penny's death. That isn't to say Captain Hammer isn't at fault as well, but Billy has plenty of reason to blame himself.

@LordSothe It's nobody's "fault" in modern terms, but Captain Hammer is directly responsible for Penny's death, even if it was an accident. If something lke that happened in real life Captain Hammer would be charged with manlaughter and Dr. Horrible probably wouldn't be implicated in the investigation of Penny's death.

@mynameismatt2010 Were this real life, given that Horrible had just committed an act of terrorism I think it is very likely he'd have been held responsible, since Hammer was just trying to stop him and Penny was essentially killed in the crossfire. I just don't understand how you can say Horrible isn't responsible since he didn't know Penny would die in his attack, but then blame Hammer when he didn't either and wasn't trying to harm anyone other than Horrible.

That's the whole point of the show, that Dr. Horrible's desire to join the Evil League of Evil and extract vengeance on Captain Hammer ultimately costs him the one thing he truly desires.
