    i love it

  • Light my Fire!!

  • @ColdSpringHarbor1971 aolong as ye know thissang aint-it

  • raw perfection

  • I found one of these "hidden" in my school today! It hadn't been played in like 5 years! :D

  • @Eurt76 I would've stolen it and brought it home!

  • @Halaberdizzle I borrowed it. It's sitting right behind me. XD

  • PHAT!

  • Fantastic sound. Almost like string bass but with that funky rhodes nasal tonk

  • damn thats a sexy bass rhodes

  • I am so loving this sound. It is fantastic!

  • funky

  • fantastic sound!!

  • RAY MANZAREK IS THE MAN

  • sounds like a bass organ hybrid(i don't know how that would be possible though).

  • is the instrument still being sold?

  • A question:

The 65, 66 & 67 Fender Rhodes Piano Bass sound like the one Manzarek play in the studio version of Break on through?

  • how does it work?

  • Betcha can't play that with one hand and play a Vox Continental with your other.

  • where cud u get one of these lol

  • too many keys.

  • Could the doors of just stuck to a full fender rhoads with the bass sound and the piano sound without have to buy just the bass version?

  • thats sex

  • This was the type of bass used on Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and Patrice Rushen's "You Remind Me".

  • ahhh felt tip rhodes...I go happy go funked up. If fender decided to re market these things they would sell millions for sure. Instant soul in a box.

  • i could play drums on this...

  • great riff, only Manzarek could play it with 1 hand ;)

  • That sound makes me think about Herbie Hancock and Chameleon or Watermelon Man :)

  • nice riff at the end...

  • Not the smartest of places to have the input jack.

But the sound of it is just amazing.

  • We really need Samples of this Instrument! I wasn't able to find some!

So please sample it an do mankind a favor! And put it on youre webside, thanks

    Greetings from Switzerland

  • @OldBassMan I'm no musician so I can ask a dumb question: If you have synthetisers and stuff why don't you create the bass sound from scratch by yourself :) ?

  • @konked Oh this is definitely not the same! Even the best cook can't make a steak with a handful of Pig Food ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @konked I can see the point. I'm interested in how the sounds we hear are produced so I know how a synth or a sampler works VCO, Filters, VCA etc :) But should it be sampled it ought to be in good condition to produce a decent sound instead of some muddy "oomph" - or rotten meat for the beef :)

  • 5 stars, for info! What a great sound...

  • Bliss!

  • looks like the garage menu from gran turismo 3 music

  • it's a pity this recording is full of white/pink noise, but it sounds cool

  • spiffy playin'!

  • nice the doors all the way and what tune are you playing sounds familiar ^ _ ^

  • love it :)

  • though shalt not covet thy neighbors Rhodes...thought shalt not covet thy neighbors Rhodes...ah screw it...I'm going to hell. That thing's SWEET!

  • ugh..... sweeeeet!

  • yep...definitely the Doors ^_^

  • are these ones still on sale these days bro?where d'you think I could get one?d'you have any suggestions.....................pls help!I looked it up online couldn't find anything on it!

  • looks annoying

  • awkward place to put a jack tho :L

  • @phatmoose94 Put an angled cable in there and it would be fine.

  • is this stevie wonder ? something else or your own melody?

  • rhodes rocks...

  • doesnt jack white use one of these

  • yes!

  • Jack white uses this in "My doorbell" live at VH1 and im wondering how you get tht distorted sound he gets on it. plz listen to tht vid and reply to me

  • The Rhodes works on the same principle as a guitar: pick ups for the keys. The more oomph you put into your playing, the more single notes and especially chords will come out with that Rhodes growl. It also depends on your amp quite a bit. Depending on your settings, you can set yourself to play pretty softly, but once you punch it, you get awesome overdrive.

  • It would be so difficult playing all that on a bass guitar

  • where could i get one of these from and how much roughly are they? been looking around and cant really seem to find a good substitute :S

  • there is one at 3000 usd right now on ebay

  • Sick... I need one of those. :)

  • @TheKeyboardDrummer

On ebay it costs 5.000 dollars:(

  • Cool

  • FUNKY!

  • Hi, JoAq. Depends how old the bass is. The newer ones have a lighter action. Late 70's early 80's The ones before were heavier. I used one in a band, my left hand got pretty strong after a while.

  • just one question? why would you use this in a band? a normal bass is far mor versaitle and in my mind better sounding (ok, i'm a bassist) ;-) . and if you wanted to use a "keyboard bass" youldn't it work on a normal rhodes, too?

please reply, the existence of this device is a mistery to me :-D

  • Captin, Yes and yes. I had a band I had the bass and the Stage 73. Most of the time I used the low side of the 73 for the bass & when a piano song came it is there. I had practiced the rotating left hand Manzarekish lines { Doors were a favorite. } just natural to get one for Doors covers.

  • listen to the doors man they dont have a bass player they used this amazing piece of craftsmanship

    listen to the doors

  • so your organist can comp with the right hand and fire your bass player with the left.

  • @CptChaos88 If your band doesn't have a bass player you could use this instead. Even though it sounds a lot different from a real bass.

  • i you're playing a vox continental like Ray did, then the low end of that wouldn't cut it as a bass - hence the rhodes bass. More low end, more 'meat and potatoes' so to speak. But obviously a real bass player with 2 hands would be recommended :-)

  • i'm thinking pretty seriously of buying a fender rhodes piano bass...does anyone know if the keys are weighted? i really hope not!

  • sounds a lot like Jeff Beck's Wired

  • Wheeeeeew!!! I'm loving it!

  • Bravo! ChikA BOW WOW!

  • The Doors!

  • yeah i love how the doors used one of these for their bass sound, instead of a bass guitar like everyone else.

  • they only had 4 people in the band maybe?

  • i'm not asking why they did it. i'm just saying i like it, because it makes them different.

  • oh my bad haha

  • @Blompcube they used a bassist in studio recordings, but the basspiano is cool

  • @Blompcube the doors actually used a bass guitar on the majority of their songs

  • @Eurobubble70 yes, i know they did on most of their studio albums, but the early stuff that they are best known for like light my fire mostly features the rhodes bass. and i've never seen any footage of them playing live with a bass guitar.

  • @NotJustMusic did manzerek play on it?

  • @lukuntri yes

  • what song is that?

  • I came a bit.

  • me too

  • Yummy!

  • Michael Jackson tribute on Fender Rhodes - check it out on my site, thanks!

  • Man, what an amazing sounding keyboard! I currently have a Mark 1 Stage 88 and a Mark V Stage 73, a wurly, clavinet and B-3. Now I really want to get my hands on a piano bass. Would you consider selling it? Please let me know either way! Thanks. By the way, great playing as well!

  • That bass isn't his. He was servicing it for someone else...who actually another member here that has videos up.

  • did i just fucking see you use vibrato on that thing?

    damn thats sexy.

  • that old bass sounds mean man

now u need a vox with that thing

  • coooool!!!

  • Fantasic! what is it about that sound that makes me all gooey inside, mmmmmmmmmmmmm 5 stars

  • Come on baby light my fire!!

  • If it's still for sale, let me know thanks!

  • This is cool but these days I would much rather just get a full length Rhodes piano. Don't get me wrong though I love this thing. I saw one of these in a second hand shop for a couple of hundred dollars. Bargain I know but I have no use for one.

  • ebay?

  • Sorry what are you asking?

  • No use? Put in on Ebay!

    make some profit.

  • That would be a pretty selfish thing to do I reckon.

  • yeah ! funky!

  • Oooh, has it got a vibrato pedal or something? cos I definatley heard a wobble in there and it was nice!

    \m/

  • how much would that sell for, in it's current condition?

  • Sounds good. I'd never heard of a dedicated bass electric piano before. Nice full sound.

  • ok

    question form the musically illiterate

can this subsitute a bass guitar?

  • yes

  • IT's what the Doors to instead of a bass guitar live and on the first studio album.

  • Yeah, Ray Manzarek used to play one with The Doors to avoid having a bass player.

  • Superb: very nice groovie sound (good technique)

  • sounds great =]

    good playing too

  • Jack White has one of those

  • This is wonderful

    Keep up the good work.

  • man this thing is real state of the art.

tried to find one (the '66 nostalgic version) but its a rare instrument.

  • Sounds great... played great too. Just got a Q: who was the wise guy who put the connection for the plug exactly over keys? :)

  • lol

and ey I dont suppose you can alter the pitch of certain keys to be higher on the fender rhodes bass

  • You can alter the pitch of any key on any Fender Rhodes keyboard. Unless they changed anything about it in the new re-issued models. You can also modify the tone of each individual key.

  • Originally you shold use a flat plug on the Rhodes, so then there are no problems in placing the hole where it is. Flat plugs are used on electric guitars, ordinary guitar cables...)

  • LOL!

    well played anyway

  • cool, i would like one of them,I think that would be fun to fool around with

  • this rocks:)!

  • Where can you get Rhodes pianos?

  • ebay or a very, very nice friend

  • ray mazarak loved those =)

  • awesome instrument, like to have that in the colection

  • nice

  • Groooovy lines, man!!

  • ever onward!

  • Really awesome. Fender Rhodes is the best sounding bass keyboard ever made!

  • That's just awesome.

  • that looks brand new very shiny!

  • Beautiful. I've always wanted a red one with reverse keys.

  • Perhaps you are referring to a Vox Continental combo organ. This being one of several combo organs Ray Manzarek (The Doors) used early on in conjunction with a Rhodes piano bass. I don't believe Rhodes electric pianos made red/reverse hue piano basses, 73, or 88 key Stage/Suitcase models.

  • I will add that Rhodes did make a red fiberglass top option for basses and celestes in the pre CBS era.

  • Then again perhaps you are referring to the quite rare Rheem Key Bass, (seen on the musical group devo's 'whip it' music video) which actually fits your descrption.

  • Fender rhodes did made a Campbells soup color Fiberglass top in 62-63. It was called Fiesta Red. The had plans to do others in that color but only the piano bass was made into production.

  • Yeah. I meant to say, i'd like to have one custom made with reverse keys.

  • What do you think of the aesthetics of the

Rheem Kee Bass (I spelled it wrong in the last post) piano bass keyboard? To see a picture of it, if you are unfamiliar with it, just google the words: Rheem Kee Bass combo organ heaven.

  • I think it is cool looking. I like the sound of the Rhodes better, but I wouldn't mind owning one. Very sleek looking indeed! Do you have one?

  • No. In fact I have never seen in person or heard the sound of the 'kee bass'. My brother plays keyboard. He has a Rhodes mark I suitcase 73 and a Yamaha YC30 combo organ for a vintage setup along with a Yamaha Motif workstation. I play the drums, but have an interest in brands and makes of different instruments.

  • Ok cool. Yeah, it has a cool look for sure. It sounds more synth like... than what I like, but is pretty cool. I've noticed the prices going up on them too on ebay. Looks like a fun board.

  • I googled it. It is nice. I definitely like the metallic swirly finish of the red.

  • Glad to have brought it to your attention.

  • Incidentally, I just noticed a website where you can virtually click on the notes of the instrument to hear how it sounds. Google: (virtual rheem kee bass) for that unique option if you like.

  • man that thing sounds nice. killer bassline too lol

  • Yeeaaahh... Dats real Fender Rhodes, it really sounds!!! Amazing feature!

  • nice

  • On a 500 dollar keyboard? I'm pretty sure it doesn't ;)

  • Well to me it does.

  • :)Well sounding alike and having the same quality is different. On a Clavia Nord it might come close but nothing will beat the original thing.

  • I have a juno d I use as a controller. It does not sound like the rhodes.

  • keep working on your ears man... eventually you will hear the difference =)

  • I just saying, it sounds like it to me. Thanks for tha reply though!

  • fuck..... rhodes bass is best

  • Also used by Jack White of the White Stripes. Cool riffs!

  • I love that instrument.

In Europe is impossible to find one of this, impossible!!

Are you bass player or keyboardist?

  • That is soooooooo nice!

  • sounds great but is painful to watch

  • that's just the delay between the music and video

  • you aren't smart!

  • Nice licks man

  • i would back that melody up on my drums all day!

  • would you sell this?

    im serious.

  • Coolness man, coolness! Nice groove you got there!

  • the legendary fender rhodes piano bass used by Ray Manzarek of the doors..great!

  • great feeling, i like the groove

  • so... the 'bassist' of the Doors actually plays the Rhodes bass, and not a bass guitar?

  • Yeah, he's the keyboard player too :)

If you see pictures of him playing, he keeps it on top of his Vox/Gibson organ.

  • sooooooooo groovy! =)

  • hm...I need to pick one of these up...

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice lines

  • weird just realized, it is lower than a rhodes which isn't a full sized keyboard.
