  • I miss squaresoft and Hironobu Sakaguchi

  • I'm playing Lost Odyssey right now. I'm on the second disc and _absolutely_ fell in love with it. A great premise, great characters, an wonderful world, an amazing soundtrack, good old-fashioned jrpg gameplay with new and unique twists on them that work out perfectly. What's not to like about that? I can't believe it only averages a score of just under 80 on gamerankings. This could easily be a 90, but I have yet to finish it, to be sure about it.

  • Sakaguchi is the only man who can save JRPGs and restore them.

  • Once Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square, every game that was released after his departure were bad, verging on terrible. This truly was the case of one man making all the difference.

  • @terran236 Well he doesen't suck and he's not as good and creative as Sakaguchi but he does a good job on Kingdom Hearts. And Tetsuya hasen't really directed any Final Fantasy games his first game he's directing for Final Fantasy is the versus.

  • @futureanimatior I would hope Tetsuya at least makes an interesting game, but didn't he direct FFXIII? That was an ok game, fun, good music, good art, but it was hindered by horribly cheesy characters and an overly convoluted story. It tried to be too epic for it's own good.

  • @terran236 No he only produced it and only did the art. I'm suprised the story wasen't good because it had the same writer who wrote Advent Children and everything. But yeah Tetsuya is good but Final Fantasy is history and dead without Hirnobu Sakaguchi. I heard he was a bit pissed off at Akira Toriyama on Blue Dragon because his art was too much like DBZ and he wanted Blue Dragon's art to be something life drawn or realistic like Lord of the Rings.

  • @futureanimatior wow interesting bit of knowledge. Blue dragon would have looked so different if it were closer to realistic looking characters. Maybe would have looked closer to Lost Odyssey but more colorful? I can only imagine the possibilities.

  • @terran236 Yeah Lost Odyssey I loved mainly because the characters looked so lively and the bad guy finally didn't look like a girl. And i'm sure it would of been more colorful and better I actually hated playing Blue Dragon because it felt like I was playing a Dragon Ball Z game the story was great but the art I didn't like because it was too much like DBZ.

  • NO wonder the story of FF12 went flat, i cant feel any interest to the story of FF12 since he is no longer part of SQUARE, unlike in FFX FF7 and other FF series. Still playing FF12 though for the sake of finishing as may FFgames as possible..

  • @meta22 You do realize Square uses different directors/producers for each FF right?

  • @Driden: You are wrong. This guy was the director of FFs up to FFV, then became the Producer of the series switching from Producer to Executive Producer. So no, FF did not switch directors that much in the time Sakaguchi was in the company. I'm not interested in the FF series anymore so I don't know about much how it works now that the games are crap.

  • @VampyricalCurse, acually, Driden is right, each FF uses different teams of producers and directors. FF13 was made by Kitase's team will Nomura's team is working on FFV13. Although some directors make contributions and involvement in other projects, each FF is worked on by different teams. For example Nomura was the character designer of FF13, although that wasn't his project, still made a contribution. It also depends on the job you have there so... yeah

  • @Chaosvalentine000: I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. Teams do change, but Driden was refering to the Director and Producer only, not the whole team. Like said, Sakaguchi was the Director for the majority of the FF games and then after a certain point he switched to Producer and Executive Producer to back to Directing. Teams may have changed from game to game, but Directors and Producers did not as often. So what Driden said was not accurate at all.

  • @VampyricalCurse, Yeah I misunderstood you and over read what Driden said. Ok. But as I've said before, I appreciate Sakaguchi and would love to meet him, just think people are making him out to be too much by saying FF is now crap without him. The series is still doing well and the only major jump in the series was so far FF13, which was still a great hit and the fastest selling FF. I don't think SE is going to put FF to shame now that this is their best selling game along with KH, another fav.

  • @terran236 They didn't fire Hironobu he left Square. He left because Square wouldn't let him make the kind of games he wanted. Which I think is stupid because Hironobu kind of helped create and found Square it's thanks to him why Square became one of the greatest companies out there.

  • I just think that there are more things about the resignation of Square than just the movie flop. It's possible that he wanted to move on. With some of the Cons that people posted about Lost Odyssey. The game itself has a lot of pros with it, something you can expect from Mr. Sakaguchi.

  • Actually, Enix didn't join with Square till after he left. But I think he said somewhere in an interview that he only planned to work on ten Final Fantasys. And he was true to his word. The first ten will forever be the best. Everything afterwards was...well...

  • @Driden, yeah I mean Sakaguchi is great and all, I thank him for making my most favorite series and I would love to meet him, but he isn't the man some of you are making him out to be. He's made mistakes himself, he isn't perfect. He's also caused an issue at SE with the failed movie. FF is still my favorite series and I still have much hope for it, regardless if he's there or not. To me he will still be remembered as the great man who made my fav series, but not as the god of SE or anything...

  • @Chaosvalentine000: Evidently nobody is perfect, but people judge too fast. This guy made a mistake with Spirit Within, we all know this, but people are quick to jump all over the place because of one mistake. I think it's pretty forgivable considering the great work of this man.

But then people are also quick to say that FF is going to be crap now that he's gone. I don't think that's true.   • @Chaosvalentine000: You know this guy is the reason SE exists today? He saved Squaresoft back then when the company was a complete failure. How he did do this? Why, by creating the FF series. He is not the God of SE, but he saved it from disappearing and will always play one of the biggest parts in the company's success whether he is there or not SE owes it to Sakaguchi. BTW the name of the series refers to the times they were created. "Final Fantasy" refered to the last hope for Squaresoft.

  • lost odyssey = start up loading, go to the INN loading, after battle loading, mostly every part loading, now i rather install the game the 1st time a play it rather than get frustrated in loading times, though "It's a good game with awesome story"

  • There was one big conflict between He and Nobuo Uematsu and younger SquareEnix creators. But thinking of that any other creators(such as Yasunori Mitsuda and many creators made old classics) left SquareEnix, you'll know how recent SquareEnix sucks.

  • I wonder if my final paradise theory could serve as a world for a game like those. It is the most beneficial option in the tough world and so could be a direction of development at least in theory: what a positive option to offer and dreamlike enough.   • Actually, Microsoft has been trying to embrace the RPG on the XBOX platform in order to increase their sales in the Japanese market... which is why they partnered with Mistwalker for Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. These games boosted the 360's sales in Japan and gave us an incredible JRPG experience. Both games did surprisingly well, especially considering the fact that the XBOX is seen as a "shooter" platform.

  • the same thing that happened to Final Fantasy XIII. yes we have it now to compete with Sony.. Okay let's move on to Halo... and more Halo (Each). Seriously.. what's their problem? And also.. Gears of War... those two titles are what Microsoft are only talking about when they are announced. The same story is repeating again. That's the reason why Square's Nomura prefer Playstation when it comes to powerful hardware. Versus wouldn't have been exclusive if Nomura wasn't in charge.

  • Square its nothing without him, you only have to see the latest ff games (X-2,XII,XIII,etc etc etc) to see that there is no more sakaguchi ESSENCE there! heck, they had to be absorbed by ENIX to survive!

  • Only Nomura isn't absorbed by Enix. Enix is on Nintendo's side this gen... Dragon Quest IX, Dragon Quest X. Square has nothing to do with Dragon Quest. And in my opinion I think that franchise haven't changed at all. The ideas is old and repetitive. The director of that franchise is Yuji Hoorii and he's living in the past. DQVIII was pure shit.

    The only developers that feels fresh today are Level 5, Tetsuya Nomura's games on Square and Atlus Shin Megami Tensei series. There should be more.

  • I never liked PS units. Sony owns the market in so many places, Nintendo has always been in my heart i just like it they use innovation before high tech machine. Thats why Wii basically sold more units this time it was different took the game to another level.

  • Well Nobuo Uematsu already the main theme song for FFXII and he will do the same for FFXIII. So I think Uematsu will making music for FF games until the day he retires.

  • @xVxObliVioNxVx It's more of a big doubt because he hasen't made one since Final Fantasy X-2 and he didn't really make it he just made sure everything went right. So probabily not since he has his own game studio now but in my view Mistwalker will and has already surpass Square.

  • @Jamie321R I highly doubt it because he hasen't really worked on one in years. 8 or X was the last one he really helped with. 7 was the last Final Fantasy game he wrote and Final Fantasy needs him back so the games can get good again.

  • I really hope Mistwalker helps the 360 pull though in Japan. My main focus is on games like GRAW and Halo, but at the same time, I really want to see more Japanese games on the system.
