@jegspillerpiano Pre is a legend because he was the first American distance runner to really have a shot at beating the Europeans and Africans. At one point in his college career he won 21 straight races and 4 NCAA national championships in the 5000m, so theres 24 medals and hes done much more than that. He was a 3:54 miler and the mile wasn't even his strongest race. He also fought against the Amature Athletic Union (AAU), which was hated by all............pretty legendary i'd say.

Man, I've got to get you a copy of Pre's biography ... lol! He won over a dozen races outside of the US - from a mile in Moscow on 7/26/70, thru a 5K in Joutseno in July of '74. In between, he won a 3K at the Bislett games in Oslo just before the '72 Olympics, and, of course, in what might have been his greatest race, pummeled Yifter in a 5K in Durham on 7/16/71 - although you're excused for forgetting that one ... ;-)

And for the last time, Pre did not "pummel Yifter," Yifter just ended a lap too early (something similar happened in one of the 5000m this indoor season and Bekele once stopped a lap too early). At least Yifter held on to his bronze medal... and got two golds later.

Vasala did prtty well in the Olympic 1500 a few weeks later, if memory serves ... ;-). Bislett is a pretty big meet - so I'm sure that the 3K field was strong.

And Munich was crappy and slow, they were running 69 second quarters, that is extremely slow for Olymipians. Pre died before his best, true, but his progression since the Olympics (a mere one second improvement while many others were starting to break 13:20) gives us an idea that his "prime" won't have been as good as people like you say it would've been... certainly not enough to dispatch an Olympic field...

To answer your question, yes, I do run very often. Why people started calling him "Pre?" Irrelevant. I study athletics, not pointless trivia, Mr. Know-It-All. Get back to running, because obviously your debating skills and your athletics abilities have difficulty coexisting.

@YiftertheShifter1 plus Munich sucked for him. Everyone was going too slow and he did not take over and lead becaue then everyone would have just drafted behind him. And with the Israely team being blown away was propbably a demorallizer for him.

Everyone going too slow? Well that's tactics. When one believes a fast race will benefit them, they push the pace. Pre eventually did do that with four laps left which is a good tactic, but eventually his urge to lead was very wasteful, and he paid for it.

What the hell does the Israeli team have anything to do with Pre being "demoralized?" If you are coming up with excuses as to why Pre lost the race, this is your worst one yet.

No he figured out that he would never outkcik Viren or the other kickers and decided that the best thing to do was to sprint a mile. He was not setting a new pace, by the last mile of the 5000 there is no more pace, there is just people with and without guts.

@BestRunner100 He most certainly was setting a new pace, much like Viren set the pace late in Montreal and Bekele set the pace in Beijing. In all cases, the winner was the one who had the best last lap. Viren, like Bekele, is unique for having the ability to both frontrun races and have good finishing speed... something that people like you are quick to dismiss when analyzing how Viren won four golds and Pre 0... the blood doping RUMOR is what you've chosen to better believe.

perfect choice of music to give the mood of his running style, and the heroicness felt from him. i like the transition of music when he placed 4th, it really got to him at first...but the thing is pre overcame anything thrown at him., he would have placed first in montreal
