I saw this performed with the YouTube symphony a couple of days ago and thought it was thrilling. I love this version as well -- really stunning. I don't know much about Persian music, but this sounds like it has hints of klezmer influence as well.
One of the amazing things about this video, aside from how amazing it sounds, are all of the looks they give each other. They are completely "in tune" with each other.
I was at the Mann Center and I can only say that it was the most fabulous concert I have ever been witness too. Performers who truly love their music and giving that gift to others. /And 3 encores, each better than the one before it.
where is the official video of this song. There is an amazing introduction to this song that was played on NPR. Where can I find the complete song with the very chaotic introduction?
@somid3 This is the official video of "Ascending Bird" performed by the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma. You may be thinking of Brooklyn Rider's Tiny Desk Concert on NPR. The members of that string quartet are also members of the Silk Road Ensemble, and they have performed their own version of the piece. Links aren't supported here, but you'll find it if you search for Brooklyn Rider tiny desk concert.
@edemardil The Silk Road Ensemble has not recorded this piece yet, so it's not available for purchase at this time. However, another version of "Ascending Bird" does appear on the album "Silent City" by Kayhan Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider. (All of the musicians are also members of the Silk Road Ensemble, and violinist Colin Jacobsen arranged this traditional Persian piece.)
@silkroadproject Yes I acutally bought the Silent City version. It is alittle different but It is still a great peice. Thanks! What is this video from?
@edemardil Glad to hear that. This video was filmed at a small concert by the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma at the Park Avenue Armory in New York in June 2009.
@Critdizzle It's a sheng, a traditional Chinese mouth organ. It's often used in Chinese opera. You can hear a clip of the instrument on its own on the Silk Road Project website.
