I personally had a hard time reading this book. It wasn't bad, it is just a hard book to read. Not only is his English style and vocabulary difficult for me to read, but because of that I never understood what was going on.
I also finished this book today, very sad and, mostly for Issa. But if, just imagine, if Issa Karpov was an FSB agent (its possible, right?), so, the all story will be very different and the reaction of USA not so stupid. FSB bring dirty money to Islamic fighters
But for Dr. Abdullah obviously, in any way, plan of Gunter was much better, not a logic aye for the aye, but use the power of moderate Islam to stop the militant Islam.
i just finished this book, great stuff, truly tragic and u never expect the end. must read for everyone, doesn't really focuses on rendition but on the thinking behind rendition as a result, the political forces etc. But the morality aspect of the book was really touching.
I am at the very end of this book now. Absolutely superb. Le Carré hasnt lost his touch. I have read all his books now (apart from "The Naive and Sentimental "). Favorites: Our Game, Absolute Friends, The Russia House, and this one.
Ha! "The Naive..." is the only one I haven't read as well. No one infuses the empathetic humanity in the development of his characters quite like le Carre.
Likewise. I've finishes the book. It's brilliantly written, another of his best in my view. The Le Carré style passion all over again, and the anger. It just goes to say never trust anything critics writes.
I didn't like "The Mission Song" that much though, got quite bored at about one third.
I used to enjoy JLC's work, especially the bbc version of TTSP, but now after hearing him review his new book, he sounds like he is ensuring we the public get another dose of the "war on terra" hype, when in reality he himself can't even comprehend that he is part of the plot, or envison such a world where there are actually no different sides in conflict, where the Illuminati control all sides to guarantee the required outcome. In our world truth really is stranger than fiction.
take another look. at base level, JLC is a realist. there are "different" sides of this conflict, just not the traditional sides (good vs. evil, government vs. government, commies vs. caps). this story is simply another of his forays into human circumstance and plight that enters a character against the very modern, real threats that the current state of world affairs offers.
When all is said and done, Le Carré is an author, not a politician. He doesnt have the influence nor the ability to change history. What he expressed in his book is a realistic reflection of the current dilemma which effects us all to a different extent. Another thing to remember, all his books are about human passion, love, hate, betrayal, and the ever-lasting gray faceless System. Thats why hes never knighted, nor will he be is my guess.
Le Carre is a total asswipe. I just heard him interviewed on Democracy/Hypocrisy Now with Amy "I gargle with vodka" Goodman.

I'm on chapter 5 as of last night, and I'm already enthralled. I like this one much better than "Constant Gardener" or "Mission Song."

I wonder what was the background music used for this video. Very apt to a John le Carre novel. Anyone, hey?=) Thanks for posting, HodderStoughton
