Man what a great game that was, great soundtrack as well !
i find SS1 was much better than the sequel .. sure they added cool rpg elements but in SS1 it never felt like going from A to B, you were in a spacestation going back and forth between levels, never know what to expect and the only safe havens were the eerie elevators ..
Aw mang, what is with the quake hate? All of them were excellent, some more than others. Different style of game than SS, but that doesn't make it lame.
@picmario are you dissing quake? dude, quake 2 was amazing. quake 3 kinda sucked. quake 4 was pretty lame, and i havent played quake 1. DONT DISS THE QUAKE
I just love it when people blame "console tards" as the reason for the dumbing down of many video games. Have you ever considered the limitations of a console and its accessories? The controller has very few buttons, especially compared to the keyboard. There is not to mention how the analog stick is not a sufficient substitution for the mouse, so a cursor used to navigate through menus would be nothing less of a bother on a console.
That, and more people are turning to consoles for their gaming desires. So, for obvious reasons, many games are now developed to fit a console's few capabilities. Thus leading to the dumbing down of said video game. Obviously, some games are just plain out dumb due to lack of a plot, character development, etcetera. And, no, those problems don't submerge because the game was purposely dumbed down for console gamers. It was mostly because of poor development.
The main reason that everyone assumes games were dumbed down for the "console tards" is because, as humans, it is part of our nature to put blame on someone or a group of people. Who better to put blame on other than the people who have different tastes and view-points? Think outside of the box, people. None the less, System Shock is truly one of the best plot-driven First Person Shooters to have ever been graced upon this green Earth.
well i work at a gamestop and i see the crap this is coming out on the systems. and some of this stuff just makes me ask if the developers are even trying to make good games anymore. i just think they are quick to put out crap and make a quick buck thats all its about anymore and it sucks
yeah i played bioshock first but now have playing ss2 its a much better game then bioshock i love how ss2 has so much more rpg elements and i just think its a better game and bioshock 2 is gonna be just awful
Hacker: "Well I have pretty much survived hell, battling monsters and mutants and a crazy AI that wanted to wipe out humanity....ah well, back to hacking."
yeah i noticed that too, the "robot" the hacker access a file to is the armor-suit the soldiers wear in Looking Glass Studios' TerraNova game (a kick ass squad/FPS/RTS hybrid with certain minor elements used from System Shock)
Looking Glass studio made System Shock. Irrational Games (2k boston currently) started work on System Shock 2 with permission from LGS - and in a joint effort LGS and Irrational created Shock 2.
Thank God they didn't name it System Shock 3. Bioshock was good, but it was a complete different experience from SS. I play SS2 more often than Bioshock, which says a lot coming from a graphics whore like me :P
I know! Bioshock was pretty cool. it was a good change from System shock. I wounder if they ever have a match up Bioshock versues System shock, Technopunk VS Steampunk.
I remember a time where Games were made even harder specifically for the western world (especially Europe). Sad to hear that now they are dumbing them down :(
Yeah, Bioshock was pathetic. No hard puzzles at all, no hard enemies (even on hard the last boss barely scratched me). And the RPG feel that was in System Shock 2 is now entirely removed and replaced by a much more simplistic system. Basically they removed everything that was fun.
they did the same thing with Thief 3. it just shows you consoles are piece of trash when you consider FPS's. instead of making an even better successor (because of new graphics, sound systems, effects etc) the companies just ruin two PERFECT titles. I hope they won't screw up Thief 4 and perhaps System Shock 3 (remember, they were saying T4 never happens=) in terms of gameplay (T3 was just AWFULY SH*TTY, Bioshock - too obvious, unchallenging) blah. cheers
@tipiz not to be that guy, but Halo and Half-life also are games that people get pulled in for the story, really wish i could of played this. I've played bioshock 1 and 2, but i loved the first one. this is an awesome sci-fi game!
@DrMlieko ya bioshock has the most similar gameplay to system shock 2 but really the closest storyline to the system shock series is the dead space series its almost an identical storyline and the setting of the second dead space is very similar to bioshock the giant city instead of under the ocean on a giant space station and then i dont really even have to say how similar dead space 1 and system shock 2 are
@DrMlieko Deus Ex is also a spiritual successor but has very different style more of a fallout style im sure u played Deus Ex before but anyways im pumped for the new Deus Ex coming out next month it looks sick a lot like the original not that terrible Invisible Wars bullshit
damthiscrazycriple: not all of the console users are moronic idiots. You judge us because of the halo/bioshock/god of war/ fanboys; My opinion: launch a remake of System Shock WITHOUT CHANGE ANYTHING FROM THE ORIGINAL GAME; only change the graphics. Because the gaming comunity need to know the existence of this wonderful game. Si EA don´t made this, is better let SS rest in his slumber...
Very true, it's a shame gamers didn't discover these great games back then, before their (relative) commercial failure brought down the companies that made them. As someone pointed out at IMDb: 'Brilliant, but not forgotten'.
Unfortunately for System Shock 1, it's demise was brought upon by Doom II which was released around the same time. Doom's brainless killing sprees seemed to interest gamers more. Too bad, for the whole genre and especially the storytelling aspect of all games since made.
One of the best games I ever played.
Epic storytelling at its best.
They don't make 'em like this anymore.

QUAKE 1 was awesome. Q2 is rather crappy, especially when compared to Unreal and Half-life. And Q3 lives on, that's quite something.

bioshock looks better but this has a way better story line it is its "spritual succsessor" i wish they had resurrected system shock
unknownunkownunkown 3 years ago 2
actually, the 2007 game BioShock is considered to be a spiritual successor of System Shock
I also need to mention the 2005 game F.E.A.R., which is also a very plot-driven FPS (and also its sequel Project Origins, currently in development)
also the Ukrainian 2007 game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl takes many influences from the System Shock games
DrMlieko 3 years ago
True, they have some of the aspects of System Shock series. IMHO, they have more similarities with System Shock 2 than 1 though.
None of them (including the sequel) really capture the essence of the original System Shock.

I suggest leaving this magnificent game in its slumber of glory, because resurrection usually means dumming it down for the console tards.
