It sounds to me that he's leaving for a long time which will break his love's heart. And he wants her to keep her heart broken and not find someone else, because if he comes back he wants to be able to be with her again.

no, not quite. it's saying that he - the singer - is going away although he promised he would try to stay longer this time. he is asking his lover to be so heartbroken about him having to leave that she won't give her heart to another. off course he doesn't want her to hurt, but he wants her to be so broken about him that she will always be his, untill he returns. one day he will return if she will still be his by then. if she does give her heart away, his heart will turn black, he'd be broken.
