This is the same as the stock engine. But its actually the 2nd engine this thing had had. The previous owner was horrible to it. He would drive it till it overheated and stalled, wait till it cooled enought to start, then drive it again :) Which is one thing for a field vehicle, but this was on the road. So i put a head gasket in it when i got it. Got the head redone too, unfortunately. Valve seals went right after i got it back together. My Fault..
i gotta ask.. u have different parts on the truck on almost every video... sometimes its got half a bed. sometimes its got no door, and sometimes all of its there WTF... lmao this truck gets a different paint job for every video
hahah, did you see the video of it with the original front end? Square headlights and all. I think there is a second of footage of it, right after i got the new headgasket in it thing.
yeah, bassically, some of the videos are really out of order, and i've done alot of different stuff to the thing. The bed is pretty much gone now. its more like a flat bed.
If Toyota get stuck then we used 2 water buffaloes to pull it.
Vietnam's mud is terrible, rain most everydays and muds got no chance to dry up, very different from sand in Arizona where I lived now.
M-113 is the best light tank used in Vietnam on the mud whicn M-41 and M-48 sometimes, someplace these 2 tanks give up to go because the MUDS, WET MUDS!
- Farmers in Vietnam they got Toyota truck + a pair of water buffaloes (enought) to work make $
How come Toyota don't make front/rear solid axle any more (I mean FRONT)??
They last long and more heavy duty than 2 pieces of drive axle in front with plastic cover those bearing in there....1983-1986 is the best year they make..THE BEST one is 4runner 4cyl EFI....BEST chassis ever!! 2 doors!
- I am still looking 1986 with good AC...then I will look 30,000 miles engine 22RE from Panama (in Japan they took all engine out around 30,000 miles) because AIR POLUTION!....good engines $550/each.
I've never had a 22re, just a 22r's, and 2 20r's. I drove this thing on the road, but never checked the mileage. We kind of already went through the MPG thing. Drew got 32MPG one time in his shortbed 2wd on a long trip, and the average is probably 22-27. for a 2x4.
@tommartyn Ok, that's pretty good. I would like one of these, there's no way that I could afford a Tacoma. Either one of these older Toyota trucks, a Wrangler, or a 6.5TD Silverado if I could find one cheap enough.
@tommartyn I keep telling my friend that Toyota is awesome he says "Chevy has brakes" as his only defense. I keep telling him that Toyota has put onto every one of their vehicles what Chevy is just now starting to incorporate onto theirs. And that Toyota and Chevy have made vehicles together. To that he says "Toyota sucks at least my Chevy can stop." I guess brakes are more important than quality?
I've been in alot of chevys that didn't have brakes, and not many toyotas. but then again, i've only ever had about 14 toyotas, and one of them had a rusted out brake line, and no brakes. the rest all had brakes, mostly excelent brakes, except for my 83 4x4, which needed new front calipers, because only the 2 small pistons on each side, out of the 4 each front caliper has was working. The 2 one each side that were siezed were larger pistons. So it needed calipers, but still stopped.
@tommartyn big different with 22RE EFI compare to carburetor. More horse power and quick respond to your gas pedal. I buy brand new 1991 Toyota P/U 2wd (I wish 4WD) Boy! they go up and down hill like the champ..with 5spds Great transmission. I got 26 - 35 MPG good fuel economy. But, when I got my boy then 3 of us don't fit in that little truck, feel very sad to sell it.
- Then, I buy 1986 4runner, 4cyl, 5spds 4WD...My life change,totaly change...camping, sleep in the forest..I love it.
yeah, i think i was pretty off on my guess there. I just got 21MPG in my 83 dodge D150, short bed, 225 slant 6 with a 2 bbl in it, with horribly tall gearing 3.21:1, and the very light duty 4 speed OD manual trans.
and a 144ci (22R) 2.4L 2 bbl toyota OHC 4cyl, in those awesome light trucks, with way better aerodynamics, and a 5 speed OD trans, seriously has to dwarf the D150 with milage.
@HedgehogOutdoors 22RE 4cyl 2.4L 5 spds around 26-35 MPG (depend on your habit of driving)
20R carburetor 4cyl 2.2L 4 spds around 28-38 MPG (depend on your driving habit) I got 22RE in my 1991 Toyota truck ( must sell :family of 3 with 375,000 freeway miles) I got 20R in my Toyota Celica..I love this. (HIGH SCHOOL time) with 445,000 miles and someone stole it! Change oil on time, check cooland and change on time, they last you forever if nothing change in your life.
@CharlieDoan That's why I've been looking into a Toyota, everything in my parent's and friend's Chevys are dying, nothing is dying in my granny's Corolla!
@HedgehogOutdoors Toyota engineer is proudly telling the world 3 main things that Toyota Company did succcessful but other Companies did not 1/ No expensive. Not cheap quality, satisfied customers and will fix their mistake ASAP. 2/ LAST LONG! Mean 100,000 miles. In customer's mind mean: OH! My vehecle JUST Break In. 3/ State of Art, Beauty, The vehicle will fit with everybody: Age,male, female And last but not least are..SAFETY! - Good luck my friend. and DRIVE SAFE
Toyota's are pretty incredible machines. These tires are a little taller then stock though, so that helps. I think they were 31's, and its sopposed to have probably some where around 28's maybe
Hey man! sorry i forgot to answer you here, I think it just took a few days. We ripped the head off in the canopy in the field, and i took the head to the man. He's pretty good though. Fast worker, and he really knows his shit.
i think it was just over 500 dollars, because i went all out. had it shaved down, new valves, new valve guides, and seats. i put a cam from my 81 toyota in it, because it had way less miles, so he had to make the bearing surfaces fit that cam perfectly. and he got me the shim, and the gead gasket. Then i beat the balls off of it too soon, didn't break in the valve guides, and so shortly after it POURED smoke out. My mistake there... Ran fine though
haha, yeah man :) this is when it still had the 22R in it. it was the second engine (at least) that the truck had in it, and when i go the head redone (got the truck free, bad head gasket) they machinist told me it had been shaved down at least twice already. so i had to shim it up so the pistons wouldn't hit. We beat the balls off that engine so much. eventually the timing jumped teeth, and it wouldn't run. The tensioner might have exploded. Then, 20R time :)
:) Sorry about that, but toyota's pretty much top everything, especially a cherokee. The cherokee might have more HP, but less ground clearance, or ability. It can't be explained without having tested one. :) We've had some cherokee's... they have problems getting traction, even with good tires. And they are just to low to the ground. Fun vehicles though, for sure. Not anywhere near as well built, or long lasting as a toyota either. But toyota are really amazing with that. 300,000 mile+
@Brassknuckledude Dare to compare your Jeep 4.0 vs Tacoma 4.0 4x4...YOU WILL LOSE FOR SURE and if you stuck in the mud or sand..you MUST call Toyota Tacoma pull you out.
I bet with my friends like this and we go to the sand places..and final his JEEP stuck, 2 front wheel IN THE AIR kkk that;s fun....I help him to pull out, went home went to bar drind some beer (he paid) and go to nude bar..FUN times is over!!! before all of us get married.
do you happen to know what the 22re turbo engine came in from the factory? i've heard about that engine but never seen one, it'd make one hell of a mudding engine
Hey! yeah! they came in some pickups and probably some celica's as well. they're called 22RTE. I've never seen one either, but yeah, :) that would be an awesome engine :) I've seen some in pickups on ebay :) i think the 22r, in any verson was only ever used in the pickups, the celicas, and the pickup based 4runners :)
i bought a 81 toyota 4x4 for $200 for my first truck i love it to death i have seen what they can really do but mine dosent run i have to save money to rebuild the 22r and i think the 22r is the best toyota motor to have for a 4x4 truck
most of the videos are shot on my grandmothers property, where i live, but this one was a few towns away, on who knows who's property, probably some buisness. but they never said we couldn't romp there :)
Yeah man! we've got it all pulled out of the weeds, and are talking about welding on it again. lucky we have this 83 to figure out the length for the drive shaft and all. Things gonna be way stronger then when i first got it. Alot of tractor frames are welded together on it. :)
I bet the b2000 could rip some stuff up too though! :) Snow tires and head for some crazy stuff :)
They are vicious! and last forever. I was just out romping my 83 toyota tercel for a few hours. took it across the creek and stuff. had to use planks to get back up the bank :) The tercel is also pretty damn indestructible! :) Never uses any gas either.
Yeah man! thats the one the bed was falling off of all last summer :) this is some older footage of it. Back before the bed was bailing on it, and before we finally broke the timing chain on the 22R that was in the thing. it was at least the 2nd engine the truck had had, and the dude who gave me the truck had blown the head gasket, and over heated it over and over and over for about a year before he let it sit in his driveway, and then we got it :)
completely un killable! :) yeah! i got lucky i had a 79 parts toyota to snatch them from :) they still drilled the mounting holes out for the round headlights, but they weren't used, and had no nut tack welded to the back. so i just had to use 3 nuts and bolts. easy enough. had to cut the wires for the turnsignals and all. different style clips to connect them.
