Borg looks like a prototypical pusher judjing from these clips...hates coming to the net and misses sitters there too, but feels just fine with passing shots and endless baseline exchanges. Snooze-inducing stuff
@kimskis Nah, just on clay he knew he could outlast any man in terms of conditioning. Limitations of the technology allowed him to play like this on clay. He had wicked passing shots which fucked over most of the serve and volleyer types around back then. + you don't win 5 wimbledons being a pusher.
This is like watching a Nadal-Djokovic match! Tedious, endless baseline rallies with no power or shot making ability, basically just waiting for the other player to make the first unforced error. That is why people love Roger Federer so much, because he has all the shots and the classic elegance of tennis. He also plays engaging matches and often raises the quality of tennis in his opponents because he forces them to play more aggressive and engaging tennis.
@SavagePersonified90 i agree but atleast nadal and djoko's rallies are exciting and powerful shots but in this their is no power and excitement in it plain boring thats it....
@afsaldurranihotmail the racquets back then didnt allow for very powerful hitting. give nadal and djokovic wooden racquets, and federer too, and their games would be completely ineffective. you had to take a controlled swing back then. and spin was used to keep the ball in the court, not hit winners like the top 3 players today
Spin allows players now to hit winners 2 m behind the base line, crazy angles. In those days, you had to approach to the net in order to hit an angle.
@cythera4 I said it with respect. Tennis changed very much throughout the years and it is because of it that the speed of the ball was in clear increase.
@sickdupin no, because these guys actually come to the net and don't scream at the top of their lungs during every shot. Borg would still be able to beat most of you hackers even today.
@jebzino I don't think so. The speed of the ball, the changes in the rackets and in the surfaces would make extremely difficult that these players could win today. What I say to you it is said by them themselves.
If only Borg had played longer, how many more majors, especially French Opens, he would have won. No could could touch him on clay. I would love to see a French Open final between Nadal and Borg n his prime.
Ok I don't know that much about Vilas but wasn't he famous for his topspin? He had a decent backhand topspin, clay was his favourite surface and here he is slicing and dicing and getting his arse handed to him on a plate 6-1 6-1 6-3. Bad tactic.
I have been playing tennis for 40 years now. Seems that every 15-20 years brings on a new dimension in style of fplay, more influenced because of racquet technology and many players copying their favorite players. In Texas during the 70s many players would copy Borg and his two-handed backhand, when I would travel around playing tournaments in the spring and summer. In 1967 a skinny Black player was invited to play tennis at the Ft. Benning, GA officers' club and play their top player. Ashe won!
As funny as this is to watch, i can really appreciate how tennis was played back then. Not as flashy, but looks a lot tougher because nobody seems to be hitting flat smack shot like so many people do now.
@TheRoserver I think there is a mistake in this clip and Fagel did win a game in the second set. So he isn't so poor after all. How many people can go through life saying they won a game against Bjorn Borg in the French Open?
