The all sound dead and carboardy to me. If the drummer would use a better technique and not push the sticks into the skin we could hear the overtones and the true sound of the snare. i mean c'mon he does't even lift the stick off of the snare after he hits it.
now if you did a little more creative drumming on the actual snare instead of just whacking the shit out of it, we might be able to get something out of this video...
1st was the most even sound with the least overtones. However, drums are meant to be played with other instruments.Overtones can contribute much to the ambience and feel of a piece of music.
I've found that totally depends on your batter head of choice. Thinner coated heads, such as the Ambassador, let a lot of the snare sound through, whereas a heavier, or two-ply head needs the resonant head miced to get a good snare sound. Just my .02
GRETSCH!!!!

The drummer kind of looks like Jess Margera.
I'd rank the snares 2, 3, and 1.

To improve sound. Mic both the top and bottom head. Remove some of the muffling on the snare. and loosen the snare wires a tad.

If you didn't mic the bottom head you made a mistake.

They sounded sorta like cardboard boxes. I'm sure they would have all sounded much better in person (without the micing)

The second one had a horrible overtone after the hit. 3rd one was slightly better.. the
1st one is the nicest sound.

Gretsch seconded - better cut imho!

I think that Metal snares have WAAAY more of a Doplar effect than any other. Does anyone agree?
