  • You seemed kind of disappointed in your first video for this camera, but in this one you seem pretty impressed. :) I've checked out a lot of reviews, and this seems like a really good camera. I love taking Bokeh pictures, ones of the city, and landscapes. (All at night) So this is looking like a pretty good camera too me!

I'm thinking about looking at some DSLR's... But I'm not too rich, so I don't know how that would work...

Off to your bokeh video now, thanks for the review! It helped.

  • @XTechnoCh1ckX I'm very happy with this camera. They have a new S100 out now. If you want t DSLR and you don't have much money.....I would get a used one. You would need to know your cameras but you could get a VERY good deal on a used one. If you want a new one then Canon has the T3 or T3i. I would look at those. It depends on how much you can spend. If you can, I would get a 7D. I just LOVE it.

  • Hi Nate, just wondering if you have tried out the S100. I'm considering between the S95 and the S100. I heard that the image quality on the S95 is better. Can I have some opinions?.

  • @my3k1z From what I have read the S100 is very nice but you won't see better image quality. It has a few features the S95 does not have but I have found while using my S95 that I never use all the point and shoot "features" I would get the S100 if money is an issue. If you want to save some money....get the S95. It's still a great camera.

  • my cheap ass canon SD1100 has that evaluate white balance function as well

  • @aseglkj A lot of cameras have it. It's nice to have.

  • should i get this or the sx230 hs? i would mainly be taking pictures of people and sceneries. i love using the new effects of these cameras and currently have the elph 100 hs but want better image quality and would like to stay in the price range and compact digital cameras.

  • THIS IS THE BEST REVIEW I HAVE WATCHED FOR THIS CAMERA. THANK YOU :)

  • you have just repeated yourself... all over again.

Take a photo with a 7d and take a photo with the S95 both identical and put them side by side you will NOT be able to see the difference not in 720p web or any resolution for the web only in print and even there it can be practically impossible to see.

  • i've read so much, so much about the s90, now I'm interested in s95 w/ miniature effect and fish-eye effect (and sharp, nice quality photos as well). And my f**king close friend told me that if im so interested in photography (im shooting my girl, macros, low lights and landscapes), i'd better move on to dSLR, not this mid-range camera. I currently own an ixy 910is. so should i take a brand-new s95 or a 2nd-hand eos 400d (18-55mm would be enuff for me, i think so). Thank you so much.

  • @tuquanvinh If you are really interested and do a lot of close ups and low light then DSLR is the way to go BUT if you can't spend the money on 2 extra lenses to get those jobs done then you might be beeter off with the S95. It's a good little camera.

  • @nate42nd those what're conflicting in my mind sir =) u mess with the dSLR, u mess with his lenses ^^. 380USD is my max. budget. Thanks for the advice. Though im still considering... :(

  • I just bought this camera and have very little advanced photography knowledge. I would like to take portraits where the subject is in focus but the background is out of focus. What settings do I need to use? I have tried large aperture (low f numbers) with no success.

  • @sensisimon Get close to the subject and use a low F number. Otherwise you will have to get a DSLR and a nice lens. That out of focus look is hard to get with a point and shoot. I have a video comparing the two.

  • So Should i get this if i want to start off with doing digital photography but i want all those manual functions for the more 'fun' art shots....the only issue i can really come to is the price, i dont like to take pictures of people often i take pictures of things when on trips so the battery life isnt much of an issue.

Basically, Is this a camera for a person wanting to jump in and have those manual functions+modes for the money or do i get something that doesnt have this level Image Quality?

  • @xealiot If you are REALLY interested in photography and want manual control.....get a DSLR. If you need this price range then get an entry level DSLR. Canon or Nikon. Good luck!

  • I have a 550D, but the S95 is always in my pocket when I don't want to lug around the DSLR.

  • Two things I don't like, it slow in performance, and I want more reach than 100mm of whatever it is.

  • @pmarchitect I have been happy with the performance but more zoom would be nice. It would be a lot bigger too.

  • @nate42nd I opted for a Ricoh CX4, it's excellent! Granted pure IQ isn't as good but I have a DSLR. 28-300mm, superfast operation, tiny, great features!

  • great review, it was detailed.. i luv this s95!

nate, how to do the bokeh on s95? like what u did on ur othr vdeo..

can u do a review about the ricoh cx5?

  • I am confused by the lack of optical zoom in movie mode. I realise that using the standard firmware I cant optical zoom while recording, however can I zoom in then start recording?

  • @iamStevenRoberts Yea optical zoom works before starting recording. Digital zoom is all you have after you start.

  • @nate42nd Thanks for that, when I phoned Canon UK they told me that it would go back to wide angle when I switched to movie mode, I thought they were wrong... They nearly lost a sale then!

I know about the lack of autofocus recording a movie (with standard firmware)

  • @nate42nd Thanks for that great review. Can you share your thoughts on S95 vs. Sony HX9V (for pictures only), which seems to have a new exmor technology? It has a smaller aperture though :(

  • The S95 has fabulous audio for such a small camera. I recorded a concert recently and the sound quality is top notch, around 90% of professional broadcast quality IMO.

  • Great review. Really GREAT review

I have a 7D and it will not fit in my pocket for some reason :-)

May get one of these S95s to take on my travels

Appreciate your time putting this vid together

  • @tonyclixby Glad to hear you found it helpful. It's a great little camera to carry and will give you great results.

  • canon s95 or sony cybershot dsc hx9v which is best pls tell me

  • canon s95 or sony cybershot dsc hx9v which is best pls tell me

  • Have you tried the G12?

  • I meant to say your audio on this is great very cnn presenter etc compared to your previous vids, new mic maybe ? shotgun? the rode videomic pro ? anyway love to know what you used for this it sounds perfect. thanks again

  • @musicforindies This is done with a 11 dollar Radio Shack mic cliped onto my shirt and connected to my 7D with a wire. It's a decent sound for the money.

  • excellent detailed review ! thanks for that, I'm going to get one for sure, thanks.

  • At first I was concerned with the pop up flash--whether it can be pushed down like a cd rom without breaking it--but its made to do that it turns out. Also I use mine on a pistol grip monopod that folds out like a tripod also--so the popping up and down of the flash is actually irrelevent. im really stoked and enthused and feel bad that i wasted so much time and good shots and videos by using lesser expensive cameras. But the size is a must--and im very happy with it.

  • @phantomvibrationsX I didn't know that about the flash. Thanks. I still like using my 7D more butt his baby is wonderful to carry when I don't have the 7D. Great info. Thanks.

  • Hi Nate,

One question about this camera I had that most reviews haven't answered.

With the G12, it's a bit bulkier, obviously this gives it better aesthetics but it also seems pretty rugged because of the extra size and grip. Does the smaller size make the S95 a more fragile camera? Also, do you find it fiddly to get the settings you want in a short time or does it handle well?

    Thanks!!

  • @Lypur The G12 will be easier to change settings. It's bigger and has more control dial on the camera. Far better if you plan to shoot manually and keep learning. If size is you concern the S95 will be about the same camera, but....it IS harder to change some settings. The front dial on the lens is programmable and you can use it to change almost anything.....just not everything. The G12 would be better IF size isn't your main concern. It was mine when I got the S95 so I could carry it always.

  • @nate42nd Thanks for the quick reply!

Well, I've already got a big DSLR, so I'm torn between the G12 and the S95. If the G12 is just small enough that you can carry it most of the time, than I'd rather have the handibility of the G12 over the more compact size of the S95. Also, I'd expect that the battery life on the G12 is longer than the S95. So to fully answer my question I think I'll need to go down and hold both cameras. Thanks so much for the reply!

  • hey Nate thanks for the review very informative...

I've been looking around at different cameras..I know im going with canon but on the fence between the S95 or sx210...the S95 has raw and focus ring...but the sx210 has a widescreen LCD, 14x optical zoom and video record button...only if the 2 were combined...

I did notice the sx series releases new models every february...maybe I should and see if the new sx model has raw and focus ring...I'm wish so...

  • Thank you for the helpful video. Ordered my S95 yesterday because of your videos.

  • @mmarglon Wow, I hope you like it. It's really a good little camera. Good luck to you.

  • That custom white balance function is awesome.

I've been vacillating between a compact and a DSLR. This seem like the perfect compromise. Think I'm gonna get it.

    Thanks for your reviews.

  • The image quality beats SD4500is, but the lack of optical zoom makes me bend to the SD. I am going to Kyoto next March and still did not decide which one is my money worth. But, again, as a biologist, I would prefer a best pic in macro.

  • @IFoundMyUsername I don't know much aboutt he SD4500is but I know it's a good camera. I think it has a backlit sensor which would make it great in low light. I don't know what kind of lens the 4500 has. I doubt it's as good as the S95. For close up shots it will be hard to beat the S95. I have been shocked at the ability of this camera to fucus at about 2 inches form the end of the lens (or less) amazing lens with a 2.0 max aperture. It does not have the long zoom, that's bad for some.

  • Hello nate! Great review! I'm looking for a compact camera to use as principal camera, and I need to decide between the s95 and the Panasonix Lumix Lx5. I want to ask you wich one do you prefer regarding the image quality.

I'm almost decided to buy the s95 but the more wide lens of the lx5 is making me doubt. Have you tried this panasonic??

    Thank you! Regards!

  • @zrisca I can't speak for the Panasonic. Canon "normally" has better IQ than Panasonic. I would recommend the Canon. If video is the "main" thing consider the panasonic as it probably records AVHC lite and has "slightly" better video. I LOVE the video my S95 has given me. S95 all the way!

  • great review :)

  • Nate, looking for your input on a question that is a major topic on the different forums. What would you pick: Canon S95 or Canon G12? I am looking to get into photography as a hobby and I am not quite ready for a dslr. Your input is much appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • @allennguyen113 If this was going to be my only camera, I would get the G12. It's bigger and easier to handle and change settings. However they will both have nearly exactly the same image quality. The G12 has more optical zoom, but less aperture (F/2.8) All around...if you don't need the small size of the S95 the G12 wouljd be slightly (VERY SLIGHTLY) better for me. Consider what you will be doing with it. Do you need to carry it in a pocket? The S95 will be better in low light (barely)

  • @allennguyen113 I'd like to know as well! i'm deciding between s95 and g12. Not ready for dslr but am into phtoography and taking it as a hobby.

  • Hey Nate love your reviews . I have a question for you .... Size isnt a problem for me but budjet is . I only have about £450 max to spend and basicly just want the best Cam/ DSLR that my kinda budjet can buy . for £450 what DSLR should i go for ? I just want a cam that will give me the best image Quality for the amount of money i have . Cheers Jason.

  • @iJsturgess Hey Jason. I'm not good with currency conversion, but I would look at a 500D or 550D....maybe the equivalent Nikon (D3100 most likely) But remember to NOT just use the "kit" lens. Leave room to get a starter lens. Even if you need to look at 450D refurbished and a 50mm F/1.8 II. Look around a little and also look at the used market. There are a lot of options out there. A G12 is about the same camera as the S95 but bigger. It would be nice. A DSLR will give you the best IQ however.

  • Awesome Nate ! Keep it up man.... I really want to know more about this camera .. Im glad I subscribed to you !

  • the available aperture is a nice feature. It's CCD Sensor is a fantastic advantage for video shooting by those who move the camera around a lot. They really did a great job with this point and shoot.

  • @kookiemoose They did do a good job with this one. The S90 was good....the S95 is better. They fixed all bad features from the S90 and really made a great camera here. For those looking for the "magic camera" this isn't it. It will not have the performance of a DSLR, but this is exactly what some people are looking for. Have a good one moose.

  • hi Nate! another tasty review. i have the S90 but i've found your S95 reviews very useful indeed....regards!....gg

  • @SweetieGord I'm glad to hear that. The S90 is a fine camera. If you move up....consider a DSLR.....unless you like the size. All the best to you.

  • Thanks a lot for the video! I've been looking daily on youtube to see if there are any new S95 related videos and I looked through the few new videos that were posted and your username caught my eye since I remembered it after seeing your other S95 videos. Ha, thanks again. :p Always checking and looking at these newly posted videos until I get my hands on this camera.

  • @SkedgySky That's why I post them. I know YT is one of the best places to get first hand info on tech. I love photography and really think this is a great camera for some. I think a lot of people looking at an advanced camera like this would be happy with a DSLR, but for it''s size.....one of the best. Have a good day.
