I saw Joe with Oscar Peterson at Ontario Place in Toronto in the late 70's I believe. What a night of great playing! Joe just shone. He did an unbelievable Stella by Starlight. And Peterson played like God.
This quartet is really cooking. Joe looks like he's loving standing by waiting for his bars, listening to the great Oscar.
As a guitarist, I could always understand the other guys to some extent....but Joe always blew my mind to the point where I felt my skills were pointless. He was one amazing guy.
wow... swinging like no tomorrow. It's pretty much magic when you feel a group of jazz musicians "come together" on a song and it just explodes... again, wow!
I love the humming at the beginning, reminds me of Herb Ellis and my guitar teacher Dale Bruning.
Every once in a while I think, 'Oscar Peterson couldn't really be that incredible' Then I listen to songs like this and I think, 'OH YA, he was that incredible!'
@G3r0n1mo These are the kind of comments that give jazz it's reputation of being listened to by pretentious douchebags. Instead of hating on what other people listen to, just appreciate the music for what it is. If we all had the same tastes, then music would be rather boring wouldn't it?
Also, Joe Pass owns even when he's not playing fingerstyle and Oscar Peterson kills it as usual. Wonderful video.
Today music marketing looks for formulas for success. Therefore you have canned (think beans and franks) songs and musical rifts. Doing less (much less) with more and more musical gimmicks--makeup, outrageous costumes, dance, fantastico sound equipment synthesizing anything including rhythm and chords, anything but what is takes to discover real greatness. It takes a life of dedication and practice-practice-practice. And I haven't even begun to introduce the underlying motives for music creation
Oscar Peterson..... Joe Pass............ Doesn't get any better anywhere.......... Anyone hitting the unlike button should try to play like this. That way at least they will appreciate the talent on show even if they can't hear the beauty....
Yes, I agree with you, uglymoon78. Bass player wasn't NHOP, but this player isn't bad, is he? Oscar Peterson was amazing piano player, His band was swinging the best... I love Oscar. Joe Pass was very good, but Oscar is frontman in this song.
It's Canadian Dave Young - I think this is the concert from Tokyo taped in the1980s. Remember NHOP hated flying so I'm sure that's why he didn't play. Yes that's Martin Drew, who's still playing at the age of 66.

There is so much great music out there. And these guys are WAY out there. Gonna have to start a Jazz category in my favorites. Is it Blues? Is it Swing? It's Smokin'!
Absolutely. And special thanks to all the folks that post these jazz classics... I've seen one-of-a-kind classic performances on YouTube that I would/ve never been able to see & hear.
I spent a week with Joe Pass sometime around 1970-71, was at a week long clinic of high school and jr. college jazzers, great guy.. wiil remember it always.
@jazzyazz ; A lovely thought. I remember watching a newscast which featured a finding by the medical community regarding the newborn. Apparently science & psychiatric medicine determined that Classical music was critical in hardwiring the minds of the newborn. I also remember thinking at the time that they must have reached the same conclusion with Jazz however with network news and prime time constraints this fact was left on the cutting room floor).
My first experience of Mr. Peterson was of a trio concert in 1984, in Montreal, televised live in New Zealand, when I was 13 or 14. I have loved his music ever since, even though he has now sadly passed.
its been a few months since i started to get into oscar peterson songs and i did notice something, i thought it was just some rude old guy in the audience :P
but then i noticed it in his earlier videos and hes gotten more and more distinct (and some people copy him), thanks but my next question is...why? :)
It seems kind of subconscious. I think a lot of players make noises when they play which kind of match what they want to express. I spose it's also like scatting in a way...
one of my jazz teachers told me its a technique that helps, if he doesnt hum hes playing something that is written, if hes humming its to guide him along a melody line that he composed before hand. personally i think it distracts me from what i sound like to the audience, especially in trios but i havent been doing piano long enough for things like this to become second nature nor am i well known or definately even any good at improvising (plus i hate my voice :P)

Yeah, maybe it's my old age-must get my ears checked. Although my computer is connected to McIntosh/Michel stereo equipment & Mirage reference speakers in a room that doubles as a recording studio (when musicians bring in their boards etc.). I transferred the clip to my Apple system and had to pull the piano and drums WAY down, bass up a tad. Then I could hear Joe much better. Drummers stay on the ride WAY too much IMHO; like fingers on a chalkboard. I agree with you about your 'board' remarks.
That's pretty cool that you able to single out each instrument. I must say though, I love fast swing beats on the ride like this, so I have no objection to it.
Yes, the Apple software is great. As for the ride cymbal, we have different tastes, but like you I also like a fast-paced, driven beat. Big Sid was reknowned for this talent and was sought after by musicians until the day of his tragic early ending. He simply clipped the ride with his other hand and with a powerful tik-a-tik pushed the pace along. It was at the close-out that he opened up and used a lot of his cymbals. No question; this IS a great performance!
Good grief!...what can you say after that!...There's never ever been anyone like Oscar!...What a giant of a jazz pianist!.. it seems so wrong that now that he's gone that all of his great music went with him!.. I mean, there was only ONE Oscar!..and his superb piano arrangements are gone with him. What a loss to the jazz world!. God Bless you Oscar!...
he is the SUN!!
It's music.. if you don't like, you should go and cry..
but don't click unlike bottom!! please!!

I prefer Tatum. His style is more soulful to me.
