  • I TRIED TO HOLD IT IN BUT I COULDN'T HELP BUT SHIT MY PANTS!

  • イイネ。こういう曲調超好み。

  • just great

  • Wonderful new Dick Hyman master class now on youtube. Dick discusses his career and musical concepts, plays two beautiful tunes, and plays duo pianos with NYC jazz piano monster Dave Frank. You will enjoy this! Type in "Dave Frank" Dick Hyman into youtube search.

  • wow, i forgot what music sounded like until i heard this

  • those are the coolest cats ever!

  • These are true and great musicians. Thank you.

  • I saw Joe with Oscar Peterson at Ontario Place in Toronto in the late 70's I believe. What a night of great playing! Joe just shone. He did an unbelievable Stella by Starlight. And Peterson played like God.

This quartet is really cooking. Joe looks like he's loving standing by waiting for his bars, listening to the great Oscar.

  • @ironpirites you are lucky man

  • @LegendLuck Agree.

  • My favorate Jazz Guitarist!

    He and Oscar together....unbeatable!

  • Did you see at 1:48??? He picked that towel up and got himself together and kept it going!!!!

  • As a guitarist, I could always understand the other guys to some extent....but Joe always blew my mind to the point where I felt my skills were pointless. He was one amazing guy.

  • i miss NHOP :,(

  • Real Local girls here naneedj.info

  • wow... swinging like no tomorrow. It's pretty much magic when you feel a group of jazz musicians "come together" on a song and it just explodes... again, wow!

I love the humming at the beginning, reminds me of Herb Ellis and my guitar teacher Dale Bruning.

  • @ripsix Dale Bruning! yeah man! He's a tough motherfucker.

  • R.I.P. Oscar. You brought so much joy to me.

  • I think the bass player is Dave Young (also Canadian like Peterson)

  • I am honoured watching and listening to this.

  • I can't hear Joe Pass at all =|

  • @ultrabot90 the very end he's ripping. A lot of counterpoint, but it's crazy.

  • @ultrabot90 the very end he's ripping. A lot of counterpoint, but it's crazy. only for a good 5 to 10 seconds, but i'll take all I can get haha.

  • Every once in a while I think, 'Oscar Peterson couldn't really be that incredible' Then I listen to songs like this and I think, 'OH YA, he was that incredible!'

  • i cannot believe people is disliking Joe Pass and OP. They definitely know nothing about music.

  • haha this is amazing!

  • 5:20 ----> OP's face ----> i like that smile

  • Absolutely marvelous, too wonderful..too incredible indeed!

  • man wish i was there for this

  • Just discovering Oscar despite the fact a good friend of mine did a lot of work for him. Who's the smoking bass player ?

  • The bass player is a little too close for comfort, but is very good.

  • a happy smile didn't leave my face while watching this

  • cantabilità spaventosaaaaa, grande Oscar

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats ..and you are a sack of shit!

Peace, bro. Can you send your adrees?

I would very much like to meat your tender lips.

    Rab

  • jazz & blues forever, oscar peterson best piano player!!

    GREETINGS FROM ERITREA!!!

  • Good.

  • Saw them live around 1974 playing the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. It was amazing to say the least.

  • the bassist is like 90 years old, still jamming it out hard...great music

  • Joe Pass was the only guitarist / musician who can keep up with Oscar

  • @djEssatu what about NHOP, Clark Terry, Alvin Queen, and countless others. Joe Pass is the man tho

  • @G3r0n1mo These are the kind of comments that give jazz it's reputation of being listened to by pretentious douchebags. Instead of hating on what other people listen to, just appreciate the music for what it is. If we all had the same tastes, then music would be rather boring wouldn't it?

Also, Joe Pass owns even when he's not playing fingerstyle and Oscar Peterson kills it as usual. Wonderful video.

  • @atomicV1sion don't be afraid of the douchey sound, love. it's your body that craves for it.

  • Today music marketing looks for formulas for success. Therefore you have canned (think beans and franks) songs and musical rifts. Doing less (much less) with more and more musical gimmicks--makeup, outrageous costumes, dance, fantastico sound equipment synthesizing anything including rhythm and chords, anything but what is takes to discover real greatness. It takes a life of dedication and practice-practice-practice. And I haven't even begun to introduce the underlying motives for music creation

  • @billjhyt

well said. What sad degraded times we live in. Jazz is the only uniquely American art form...and 99% of Americans ignore it. Says it all really.

  • Oscar Peterson..... Joe Pass............ Doesn't get any better anywhere.......... Anyone hitting the unlike button should try to play like this. That way at least they will appreciate the talent on show even if they can't hear the beauty....

    Cheers Jim

  • Who are those fcking a55h0les who clicked the unlike-button?? They should go and watch 50cent, Britney and all these craps..

  • @G3r0n1mo Why all the cursing son ? Just another loathsome person. Just chill o the nice music and let button clickers do what they want.

  • @G3r0n1mo And ain't that the gddm truth!!!

  • this really cooks !

  • When Oscar gets going you got to give it up and go; then Joe kicks in all 4 just fly. Beautiful!

  • Thats the happiest bloke I have ever seen on piano!

  • @nuke97 If you like happy blokes playing piano you just must check out Billy Preston playing Nothing from Nothing!

  • Oh wow, this is great.

  • best jam i have ever heard, love joe pass

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ 4:54 it goes to a shot of Joe's foot patting then to shot of Oscar's foot patting right along with it

  • Fantastic.

  • he really knows how to slappa dee bass

  • @Spanky5758 lol

  • I think this was the constellation of the group:

Pablo Records-2310-947 Oscar Peterson - Time After Time

Oscar Peterson (p) Joe Pass (g) David Young (b) Martin Drew (d)

"Westwood Playhouse", Los Angeles, CA, November 12 & 14, 1986

    Cool Walk

    Love Ballade

    Soft Winds

Medley: Who Can I Turn To? / Without A Song / Time After Time

    On The Trail

** also issued on Pablo PACD 2310-947-2.

  • Grooooooooveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • Yes, I agree with you, uglymoon78. Bass player wasn't NHOP, but this player isn't bad, is he? Oscar Peterson was amazing piano player, His band was swinging the best... I love Oscar. Joe Pass was very good, but Oscar is frontman in this song.

  • It's Canadian Dave Young - I think this is the concert from Tokyo taped in the1980s. Remember NHOP hated flying so I'm sure that's why he didn't play. Yes that's Martin Drew, who's still playing at the age of 66.

  • great playing by oscar and joe pass, and the interchange between them; wow! Martin Drew was the drummer, looked a bit like Gordon Brown, didn't he? The bass player was definitely NOT NHOP!

  • why does oscar hum when playing...? how the hell do you multitask when you're playing that much piano

  • He's singing his lines!

  • excellent..........

  • Amazing!

  • @gessed

Ray Brown is a Black, right

    OK

  • Yes !Ray Brown was black. The guitarist of the famous trio was Herp Elis.

  • They both were p[art of erv Griffins band, when he had an afternoon talk show. Jack Sheldon was also in the band! That show use to keep me in after school when I was 11 or 12. It's Herb not Herp. but you've got a good ear and eye.

  • Actually the bassist is Niels Pedersen. His name was usually shortened to NHOP because his full name was difficult to pronounce.

  • Neither, the bassist is Dave Young, a Canadian. Niels Pederson was bigger and (usually) had a beard. Dave Young is skinnyer.

  • Thanks for the info. I'll have to look him up on Emusic.

  • the drummer is Martin Drew from England...He maybe dead now, I don't know...

  • now THIS IS MUSIC!!!!

  • Its smokin hot

  • There is so much great music out there. And these guys are WAY out there. Gonna have to start a Jazz category in my favorites. Is it Blues? Is it Swing? It's Smokin'!

  • jazzyazz

With all the shit that's happening in the world today, can we all just come together and agree that this is great music?!? Lol.

Yes. I totally agree with you :)

  • E DEMAIS ....

  • E DEMAIS..... IN THE POCKET

  • Brilliant!

  • The GREATEST, Mr. Peterson...

¿Nacerá algún día otro músico con esa calidad?

    No creo.

  • Jazzyazz

    >can we all just come together and agree

    >that this is great music?!?! Lol.

Absolutely. And special thanks to all the folks that post these jazz classics... I've seen one-of-a-kind classic performances on YouTube that I would/ve never been able to see & hear.

I spent a week with Joe Pass sometime around 1970-71, was at a week long clinic of high school and jr. college jazzers, great guy.. wiil remember it always.

    chw

  • With all the shit that's happening in the world today, can we all just come together and agree that this is great music?!?! Lol.

  • @jazzyazz

    Ummm, yeah.

  • @jazzyazz ; A lovely thought. I remember watching a newscast which featured a finding by the medical community regarding the newborn. Apparently science & psychiatric medicine determined that Classical music was critical in hardwiring the minds of the newborn. I also remember thinking at the time that they must have reached the same conclusion with Jazz however with network news and prime time constraints this fact was left on the cutting room floor).

  • man this is nice

  • daaaaaamn that was epic. joe pass with oscar, too bad i wont get to see that live.

  • dave young is amazing

  • WOW. Wish I could play keys like that!

  • Me too.... me too

  • dave young is a master in bass history

  • If god exist those people are the saint in the paradise !!!!

  • yep youre definitely right

  • Superb technique as always. Never heard a bad performance from Oscar or Joe Pass. Really swings

  • Divine.!!! This is why thepiano is the ultimate life long companion. ...Wake up !. This is piano at its best!! Groove on!!!

Want to get inspired ..to play ..stop by here!!

  • I love what Oscar does

  • I love this group.

  • you HAVE to love the peterson hum=)

  • I love Joe Pass. For me, he really personifies this style of jazz guitar playing -- and he always will. :D

  • Rhytm, swing, melody, musicianship professionalism. This has everything and it is one of the best pieces of music I ever heard.

Keep swinging in heaven Mr Peterson and Mr Pass.

Keep going Martin Drew and Dave Young

  • Great! When I was a little boy I already thought "Cool music but what kind of bear is it humming in the bachground" But realy he the best.

  • This is one of my favorite of his stuff

  • it reminds me of alucard from this japanese anime called hellsing cause a piano song is always associated with him

  • These cats swing like there is no tomorrow!

  • wonderful!! thanks!

  • Bass player is Dave Young.

  • thanks!!:)

  • My first experience of Mr. Peterson was of a trio concert in 1984, in Montreal, televised live in New Zealand, when I was 13 or 14. I have loved his music ever since, even though he has now sadly passed.

  • am I correct in assuming that the bassplayer is NHOP?

  • I dont think so. but i dont know who it is.

  • wow. oscar peterson always has so much to say. phenomenal.

  • sublime !

  • Just love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is he humming?

  • yes indeed. if you can play that good you can do anything you want.

  • haha :P

  • yep. its kind of a trademark habit of his. listen to records of the ocar peterson trio and you can hear him humming

  • its been a few months since i started to get into oscar peterson songs and i did notice something, i thought it was just some rude old guy in the audience :P

but then i noticed it in his earlier videos and hes gotten more and more distinct (and some people copy him), thanks but my next question is...why? :)

  • It seems kind of subconscious. I think a lot of players make noises when they play which kind of match what they want to express. I spose it's also like scatting in a way...

  • one of my jazz teachers told me its a technique that helps, if he doesnt hum hes playing something that is written, if hes humming its to guide him along a melody line that he composed before hand. personally i think it distracts me from what i sound like to the audience, especially in trios but i havent been doing piano long enough for things like this to become second nature nor am i well known or definately even any good at improvising (plus i hate my voice :P)

  • So are U not feeling it? It was in the pocket to me!

  • I totally am feeling it. Oscar Peterson and all the people I've heard him play with are beyond incredible...

  • no I am

  • As always the two legends of Jazz. Great loss to the music and genre.

  • what badass, pauses to wipe his face, throws in a clap,... Awesome clip

  • oh mahhhhn!! this is so virtuoso!!!

  • Bassist is probably George Mraz. Drummer is Martin Drew

  • who is playing the bass?

  • Dave Young for sure. Not George Mraz. Dave is current;y one of my heros.

  • nahhh, se va a la mierda

  • Both sorely missed.

  • I love how oscar peterson, sings his part...

  • I truly admire accomplished jazz musicians like these. its such a individual, unique art form but at the same time collective.

  • This is a ridiculous sounding conversation. Amazing piano though.

  • what a great player. No-one to touch him on the scene today

  • Joe had a solo? When and where?

  • Around 4:30 or so.

  • Oh, okay; thanks. Oscar is so busy all the way through that for my ears he drowns out Joe. Will listen again.

  • How could you possibly miss his solo??!!

  • Because Oscar is comping loudly all the way through, often drowning out Joe. Secondly, the drummer does not change cymbals to a quieter one. Neither of these lend to clearly hearing a guitar solo - especially Joe's quieter sound. Big Sid Catlett was the best at emphasizing a band member's solo by going quieter on his drums and changing his cymbal work, while the rest of the band backed off. This one keeps charging ahead, which is great energy, but to my ears Joe's solo is noisily played over.

  • It's agreeable that the rhythm section was loud and that Joe was too quiet, but that's the sound engineer's fault, not the rhythm, section's. If I was behind the board, Oscar's mics would come down a little and Joe would come up. Besides, it wasn't that bad. I had no trouble at all feeling and interpreting his solo, but somehow, you completely missed it. That's why I'm baffled.

  • Yeah, maybe it's my old age-must get my ears checked. Although my computer is connected to McIntosh/Michel stereo equipment & Mirage reference speakers in a room that doubles as a recording studio (when musicians bring in their boards etc.). I transferred the clip to my Apple system and had to pull the piano and drums WAY down, bass up a tad. Then I could hear Joe much better. Drummers stay on the ride WAY too much IMHO; like fingers on a chalkboard. I agree with you about your 'board' remarks.

  • That's pretty cool that you able to single out each instrument. I must say though, I love fast swing beats on the ride like this, so I have no objection to it.

  • Yes, the Apple software is great. As for the ride cymbal, we have different tastes, but like you I also like a fast-paced, driven beat. Big Sid was reknowned for this talent and was sought after by musicians until the day of his tragic early ending. He simply clipped the ride with his other hand and with a powerful tik-a-tik pushed the pace along. It was at the close-out that he opened up and used a lot of his cymbals. No question; this IS a great performance!

  • beutiful song, very nice playing. That's the way how it should sound :)

  • That's my Mentor! He's the man. What style, what class and what tone! He was THE best!

  • Peterson while he could still use his left hand before his stroke. He had Dave Young on base , Martin Drew on drums and Joe Pass on guitar.

  • this is amazing!, u can hear him singing as he plays!

  • That shit is on.

  • FANTASTIC !

    Thanks...

  • Great! Great! SuperPeterson !!!!!!!

  • joe pass is a beast.

  • Thanks Mr Peterson. What a swing. Fantastic.

  • I would listen to Wynton Kelly

  • Cool bass

  • Good grief!...what can you say after that!...There's never ever been anyone like Oscar!...What a giant of a jazz pianist!.. it seems so wrong that now that he's gone that all of his great music went with him!.. I mean, there was only ONE Oscar!..and his superb piano arrangements are gone with him. What a loss to the jazz world!. God Bless you Oscar!...

  • I prefer Tatum. His style is more soulful to me.
