from what I know deshita is the past form of desu...so sugoi deshita would mean it was great...please correct me if I'm wrong

not really! lol sugoi is an i-adjective....and with i-adjective you must use the past form of katta 〜かった。therefore....even though the past form of desu is deshita. you would say sugokatta desu. lol any na-adjectives like kirei, beautiful would use deshita. its a RULE! lol
