reining is definitely NOT mean to horses. im a reiner in training right now and Softness is the secret to these horses. they are EXTEMELY soft mouthed. The cues are done off of the leg and your body positioning. They are trained in this manner and they dont do that many spins depends on the pattern, try yourself spinning 4 times around i think youll be fine! it is hard on the rear though if you are over sliding all the time though, but at the same time every sport puts some strain somewhere. :)
In reining alot of horses do put their ears back, yes. But its not a mad ears back, its out of concentration. Its an amazing and graceful sport. Think of a dancer, it takes concentration to perform gracefully and to be beautiful in your movement, it is the same for a fine reining horse.

I am a Equine Sports Medicine Vet Tech and let me tell ya...horses screw up their hocks from plenty of things that does not involve reining. These horses are bred for their sport.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
