@warrenwally Apparently Mikael likes him because there are a lot of interviews on YouTube with these two. And they're usually good ones, despite the interviewers mediocre English.
Opeth wanted Heritage to be different. If you've watched his interviews and listened to most of their records you'd probably know. They make each album unique and different to what they previously released. Mikael says they never want to go mainstream and this is how they do it.
I think what Mikael's trying to say is how much he is a fan of Alice and other 70's albums, not the directly/conscious influence some might expect. It's also obvious that he feels the need to change and evolve as an artist. I like Heritage and expect a great live show to follow.I will be seeing them live this week and look forward to both the new and old songs!
he´s lying... mikael want to sound like 70s... it´s imposible to sound like "Heritage" without want it... doesn´t "Watershed" have good microphones? and it have a modern sound (like all the Opeth records) complety diferent from the vintage "Heritage"... so he´s lying hahaha but he is a genius hahaha
"sometimes I sell records to support my habit of BUYING records." Two things: First, you'd think he'd have more money after making 10 albums and being a world wide known musician. hmmm. second: What a fucking badass. He damn well knows he could put out some mainstream shit, have his face plastered all over VEVO's stuff, but he does not. He stays true to himself and his fans. He has integrity as a person and as an artist. A true genius.
I was 21 in 1993 and stopped visiting record stores around that time because vinyl had pretty much vanished from the shelves, even hear in Finland. Little did I know that I could have found them dirt cheap in second hand shops - wish I'd had a music geek like Mikael around to tell me about them, lol... Good for him to stick with vinyl when it looked destined to become a dead format of music.
And cool shirt! Mob Rules well and truly, you know, RULES.
He looks so relaxed. Like he is, to his core, at ease with how he stands in the world. His words and his music stand for themselves and have expressed exactly what he wanted. this is a man who can look anybody in the eyes.
to experience Heritage fully... you must take some shrooms... honestly... i love that trippy-ness aspect of it and am absolutely intrigued by the direction
Mikael is right when you collect a lot of records from obscure bands you often look at what instruments, art work, and song titles. I can't imagine where you would put that many records in a home.
@grosssover slazem se sigurno su bili najaci, htio sam reci dam smo imali ogromnu prog scenu. Steta sto nemamo dobrih reizdanja, da citav svijet moze cuti.
@Khachik2003 Since Morningrise? You can't even compare them, Opeth aren't death metal anymore. I think "Devil's Orchard" sounded great, but there are no growls ANYWHERE on the entire album! No death distortion, probably nothing like their past stuff.
wow u must be socially very talented. I was in that concert and heard that joke he said and if u arent totally fucking retard and can read ppls face expressions, tone of voice etc. u would clearly understand that what he said was a joke.
@7thNoodle I think that he likes at least one song with the word "Cocoanut" in it: I'm referring to "Cocoanut Groove" by the band "Affinity", (Which were listed as one of Mikael's influence on his official myspace page some time ago, I actually think he already paid homage to them by calling a song "The Leper Affinity") Oh, by the way, this is a very inspirational interview.
@JBT24 Yeah, I know. I met him in person on a Pink Floyd-event in stockholm and was shocked with how "fresh" he looked. I guess he laid off the beer a little!
@Lbradsteen definately the best interview to date, its nice to hear him after all this time away. It makes it that much better!!!! Absence makes the heart grow fonder (they say)......!!!! :) The new album cant come soon enough!!!!
@marilynknotborgir As far as I can see, it's a piece of glass, and what looks like a video is actually the reflection of whatever is outside the window of the room they're in.
