Tom is alive AND kicking. His pipes still sound fabulous. I checked and he has dropped the keys of most of his songs by three semitones to accommodate natural changes that come with age (singers tend to lose reliable high end of the range, but the voice also gets deeper). But his power and timbre is fully intact. I saw him last year in Bangkok, and it was no nostalgia tour - new original funky material that was good, and old hits sung without any loss of interpretation or delivery

Yes, he is a great singer (saw him in Bangkok in 2010 - great - his pipes are in top shape), but he was head to head - not competitively, but exposed - with THE virtuoso jazz singer. My point is she was singing in his genre (the other way around it would have been outside his box), and she is also enough of a pro not to try and upstage him with vocal pyrotechnics. Tom is a belter with good range reasonable subtlety, Ella has heaps of subtlety AND power and range.

Ella's eyesight was extremely bad . the lights and cameras to Ella was like sunlight to Dracula because she could hardly look into the camera. if you notice many clips of Ella she tries to avoid the camera and sometimes her eyes are shut real tight. @joromark I work regularly on the corporate up market wedding scene with girls who sing to the old 60's standard,with our big band,they are also very striking,humble nice and grounded and get turned down from any TV show as they don't know Cowell or a 3 rd party that will get you an audience with record execs,That's why you don't hear singers like this.I also know a singer who takes Tom off doing his young tenor voice at his peak in the same key,and they don't clap as they think he's miming!
