Really nice rendition. To those of you asking for tabs, learn to read music. I don't say that to be a jerk. If you truly have a love for the guitar and music, then you should learn something about it.
@noonelikeskat - While I can certainly agree with that, if someone learns music theory, scales, modes, and how to read music, they'll not only learn how to work it out by ear, but also they'll know what chords and notes are what just by hearing them.
@noonelikeskat - Not to mention the fact that it's really not that hard. The average idiot could learn music theory if they just spent 15 minutes to a half hour a day. Add the intelligence factor for someone who actually is musically inclined, and the speed at which they do learn is increased marginally. Even some of the most drugged out losers know what an augmented chord is as well as all 7 modes.
@noonelikeskat - Sorry for writing a book on the topic, but I just wanted to add that even people who only play by ear recognize that their are obvious patterns that just work all across the fretboard. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that knowing why those patterns exist, will help a guitarist out tremendously.
@kremisos You couldn't be more right though, I found the theory of modes, intervals and chord structures incredibly helpful...
People who are asking for tabs, spend less time learning songs by tabs and more time learning the theory behind the songs you already know how to play. Then come back and learn new pieces by ear.
@noonelikeskat Well, I guess I kinda look at it this way. Learning to play only tabs, is the equivalent to being really good at guitar hero. Anyone can grab a metronome or listen to the song and play along to tabs. Some are quicker than others, but understanding how things are put together is what truly separate a musician from some guy who just so happens to have a guitar and knows how to turn an amp on. :)
@noonelikeskat - I spent years playing the sax as a kid. Improv is really important in Jazz and when you have to stand up for a solo, you obviously have to know what notes are going to sound like shit, because your solos are not worked out beforehand at all. When you have to stand up at a democratic convention or an ice show and pull a solo out of your ass, it helps to know the key of the song you're playing and what notes are going to sound like shit lol.
@noonelikeskat - so yeah playing by ear is great, but if you know what notes to STAY AWAY from no matter what instrument you're playing, that helps tremendously as well when you're live and have to improv.
@kremisos I'm sorry but sometimes there is a call for quickly learning a song via tabs. Obviously, this song is fairly easy to play by ear, but don't just shrug off tabs as a bad medium for learning a new song.
@FlashBaron It's not really about shrugging off tabs. It's about knowing what you're doing also. Sure tabs is a quick way to learn, but wouldn't it be nice to know what notes you're hitting? What does it hurt knowing what key you're playing in? If you can read music, understand basic music theory, play by ear, AND read tabs isn't that better than just doing one or the other?
@kremisos I absolutely agree. But it was just seemed like you were telling us -- even those of us who do know music theory -- not to learn anything by tabs. I was just trying to point out that there is a use for tabs, and that it's not the great evil that befell classical training.
@FlashBaron Well that wasn't really my intention. I know I come off as a bit of a smartass at times, but I taught myself how to both read and write music, theory, as well as several instruments without formal instruction. I think in a lot of respects, tabs have made people more lazy and less willing to learn, but outside of that I have no problem with it being one more way to pick up a song quickly. It's just that many people use this as a crutch and never bother to learn anything else.
I don't think it's necessary, but I do think it will make someone a better musician. There's plenty of people that play wonderfully and don't know anything about music theory. A lot of the rock now though sounds the same and uses the same boring chord progressions. Why? Because instead of learning about music, their brains are just copying the same overplayed garbage into what they think are original pieces.
@LittleChineseBoy There is a download link in the description just below the video. I don't really write tabs. But I have already put a comment with the chords.
What a great arrangement! I'm not sure whether you had this in mind when you arranged this cover but this sounds almost directly inspired by the music from Twin Peaks. If you're not familiar you should watch the show or at least search "Laura Palmer's Theme" and give it a listen.
@Matfen815 What I'm saying is that this arrangement in particular makes 'Life and Death' sound a whole lot like a track off the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Though I would still say that Lost in particular has a lot to owe to Twin Peaks.
@devilgodrageinme nope. not drop C. Standard tuning. If you're all stuck then it revolves around these chords: Bb, Dm, Eb, Gm and F. use different inversions.
The distortion is the compression of youtube, like i said, there is a better version in the info.
Its mostly just reverb, delay, mxr phase 90, a ring modulator later on and a stereo tremolo at the beginning {only stereo on the better quality version as youtube made mine mono :( }
hey i was wanting to make a video with this song in it. If you let me i will give you credit. Can I?
