I have bird seed, but I'm worried about feeding it to them after reading/seeing the videos about how unhealthy the seeds can be. I'm just taking stock of the fruits, veges, and grains I have on hand until I can get the seed sprouted. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
@angar8668 oats are ok for bigger parrots, so they would probably be ok but the budgies might not recogniste them as food. If you are looking for something to feed you bird because you have no seed, try toasting some bread or giving them biscuits/crackers (not too salty or sugary), just make sure you give them plenty of water and dont feed them like this often.
You've been so helpful with your grass seed and sprouting videos! I've been looking for clear explanations and you've been amazing at explaining it all :) Me, and more importantly my cockatiel love you for it haha! :)
what's your opinion if I sprouted the bird seeds then I put them into an oven to dry those sprouted seeds, will they be the same in nuritions for birds?
Do we have to put them in the fridge or can we feed them to our cockatiels straight away? Also how long will it take to get the seeds sprouted to the length that you prefer to feed them?
@werewolvesarehott you dont have to put them in the fridge - it depends on how much you sprout at one time. i sprout quite a lot at once because i have 8 birds to feed and dont want to do a new batch every day. Once you can see the seed open and the sprout stick out you can feed them to your birds. you can also let them grow a little longer - say 2-5mm but after that i would throw them out, plant them, or refridgerate them - as the fridge stops them growing and keeps them fresh for longer.
Hi I have just experimented your method of sprouting and I have a few comments I would like to add.Firstly I noticed few cracked broken seeds in my dry seed mix to start with. Are they still edible for our birds after sprouting and do they increase chances of spoiling?.Also what about those seeds that float and the ones that are stuck above the water level. The ones that are above water level I have been pushing them down with a spoon.Congratulations and great posts regards Jo
@nirep2 the cracked seeds probably will not sprout. As long as you rinse the seeds twice or more each day, it should be fine, as i get cracked seeds too. The seeds that float do that because there is air inside them. Ive noticed sunflower and safflower seeds tend to float more than other seeds, and they still sprout. Some people say to get rid of the floating seeds, but i dont find them to be a problem - there isnt enough to worry about. If lots of seeds float the seed might be old?

can I feed my budgies couscous? if so, is there a special preparation for the food? or can I give it to them just out of the box?

@angar8668 DONT feed your birds UNCOOKED couscous! it will kill them.
Google "how to cook couscous" or search on here, its easy.
Cooked couscous is ok to feed a bird, but it wouldnt be that healthy for them so probably not good to feed them often.
