  • This was from a concert in 2001 where Gavrilov was supposed to play one of the Rachmaninov concertos, but the conductor fell very ill and there was apparently no replacement. So Gavrilov was asked to prepare a solo recital in less than a day's notice. I think we should give him credit for even playing this well, considering he was on a concert tour and hadn't practiced any solo pieces for a month. This is not indicative of a typical Gavrilov performance, and he shouldn't be judged on this.

  • ... .... ...what the F*** was that

  • Orribile!

  • Che schifo! Questo è Scarbo di Ravel, non è la 6a Sonata di Prokofiev né Petrouchka di Stravinski!!

  • Well, he looks and plays like a gorilla. Honestly, the passage from 3:15 - 3:45 alone was enough to make me despise the whole performance. He rapes the piano and its pedals (especially in the aforementioned clip). A terribly out-of-control, tasteless, but fairly comical rendition.

  • grande gavrilov!la resa del brano e' squisitamente personale..e lascia immaginare meglio di altre interpretazioni ( valentina lisica) gli intenti di raveli di raffigurare i' dispetti'del folletto scarbo!splendido davvero!

  • Sorry, what is he doing? I hardly can follow melody or beat at all. I am feeling sorry for pianist as I am listening. He obviously doesn't able to play this song. Because he lacks technique very miserably. That is without question from this play. Sorry, wrong English, but my opinion.

  • "beat" lol

  • "pulse" then, if you like^^

  • Just a question. Is this the rendition of Gavrilov that Richter also heard (which made Richter decide that he wouldn't play Scarbo anymore because he said Gavrilov's rendition was great)?

  • @jodields richter died earlier.

  • Technique is very great. And the interpratation is really like Scarbo (He even looks like Scarbo at 3:33-3:40). But I agree with the past comments that this rendition is like a remix. Also, its really hard to believe that he is still playing the right notes at some very hard passages (3:33-3:40 again, he truly looks like a child banging on the piano keys, as what Razaak had commented. And the pedal looked like it was about to break as he was literally kicking on it!)

  • if i heard this piece the first time by gavrilov, i would be so obsessed with scarbo. but his performance is so different from other performers. if he had corrected some notes when he was playing really fast, i would be more convinced rather than missing half of the notes.

  • david !! go back to eat your bacon!!! you are disgusting ...

  • His playing is extremely good. I also like his sensitivity. He was naturally concentrating hard and the camera work makes a mockery of him up close. So often people should shut their eyes and enjoy!!

  • all right, maybe he is a little out of control this time, but it is still electrifying performance

  • Apologies if my last post to come across as disrespectful. I am, infact, a huge admirer of Gavrilov and have been for many years. Some of his interpretations are indeed almost peerless. His Islamey, my favorite alongside Barere. His earlier EMI recording of Chopin's four Ballades is wonderful, full of emotion and beautifully articulate. The 24 Etudes too, are sensational and not, as many have suggested, devoid of charm or elegance, at least in my view.

  • This is a very badly recorded video. I heard Gavrilov performing the Rach3 Concerto the other night and he was absolutely fantastic. With the right repertoire he is still one of the best pianists. The audience were on their feet chearing at the end.A magnificent pianist.

  • I just bought his recording of the Prokofiev No.1 Concerto with Simon Rattle. Incredibly brilliant and beautiful playing.

  • I agree with those who have highlighted the - one would assume unintentional - comedy value in this performance.

It's almost as though he utterly loses his temper in certain passages, during which his pace is simply unrealistic. 3:33-3:40 for instance, has me on the floor everytime, he's like some demented five year old throwing a tantrum!! It could even be said that he has BECOME SCARBO!

  • I personally think the whole thing is absolutely disgusting. He almost has a good technique, were it not for the trerrible aim at a keyboard. He is beyond eccentric. He must have been mentally ill at the time to let himself ever put out such a load of diabolical unmusical shit. Everything about his sound is disgusting, and it looks like he is trying to ruin the piano aswell as everybody's ears.

  • Anything's possible. The score's structure and your imagination. I imagine him giving Ravel pointers while committing. Realistically, I think he does best with Liszt, where that technique can shine as a circus arc light.

  • I liked it. I think his aggression translated nicely.

  • Man that is the funniest shit I've seen in months. I respected his Prokofiev sonata recordings a lot but that is just hysterical.

  • What was that? He must be on crack or something, and it's hilarious! 3:30 sounds like the tape is getting chewed up. This is what Horowitz would have sounded like if he'd have lived another 50 years.

  • ROFLMAO

  • I admire Gavrilov deeply. But my view of Gavrilov's live recordings is "this is what would happen if Argerich played any faster."

This Scarbo gets so wild that it makes me want to laugh. Seriously. It is comical.

  • personally I think it s very rythmic and aspect often overlooked.Argerichs is fast and clear also and with the latino rythms.

  • Clownesque. Awfully dry. Awfully agressive. Awfully far from music. Yes, damn strong fingers. Just listen to Argerich, Pogorelich, Samson François, Pierre-Laurent Aymard.

  • Go and see the video of Argerich or Pogorelich (or listen to Michelangeli) for this has nothing to do with Ravel.

  • omg this is SO BAD!! every time i watch it it gets worse

  • infact, anyone could sight read it faster than gavrilov, all you have to do is hit the piano as hard as you can, and jump up and down on your seat

  • 16 hrs/day foe six months to play it half the speed of Gavrilov"s if you are a fine pianist

  • ARE YOU ACTUALLY SHITTING ME. you can only know how hard it is if you've played it. "16 hours a day for 6 months to get it half of his speed if youre a fine pianist" BULLSHIT. there are only 3 passages in the whole thing which are very difficult. the rest can be learnt on an hour a day basis. god people talk shit on here

  • Elevateme; I think this is a dificult piece. I don't like playing with my hands knotted together and this piece is full of that stuff. Add repeated notes into it and you have very little room to play. It's not impossible but it is awkward for some people.

  • nostromissimo: i know, i have the best fingering in the world for it. i play it

  • HAHAHAHA That was insane.

  • Gavrilov is just so damn amazing! What a legend

  • speed isnt everything. gavrilov has no musical sense!!!

  • ghey

  • Dear elevateme, I TOTALLY AGREE with you. Gavrilov's Chopin Sonata #2 in Bb minor is virtuosic to the extreme. His last movement is only one minute long, WAY TOO FASSSSST! Listen to Byron Janis's version. Perfect!

  • haha da SDC invasion

  • His earlier recording is far more impressive-

  • Typical Moscow school,a shitload of theatrics. Most pianists have no dignity whatsoever...

  • You don't know s**t. There isn't even a 'Moscow' school of piano playing. The conservatory consists of a highly diverse set of pianistic aesthetics. When Gavrilov could really play he could dominate the world scene in piano--unfortunately, his peak was short-lived and he was never given ample time to develop.

  • I know $**t when I see it.I don`t doubt Gavrilov can hit the right notes,it`s his disgusting personality that bothers me,but what $**t is to some people is a delicacy to others.Anybody who is a self-confessed Richter maniac may love the rest of the Moscow fag school of piano clowns.

  • On zecond thought... maybe da comme haz dubbed ovah da GAV wiz hiz own CG interp?

  • fuck i'd luv to hear diz sheeyat in zum zort of quality othah den... sheeyat.

  • This is a very interesting performance, I have listened to better ones and I think argerich has the best recording. No doubt he has a great technic but it isn't everything when performing. That's my opinion

  • O.O

  • Very interesting, not to mention, rather bizarre! In his prime, I consider Gavrilov to be one of the supreme techniques of the modern era, though that may not be entirely in evidence in this performance - Gaspard was never a speciality of his - it is nevertheless both full of life and compellingly visceral. Amusing how his tendancy for excessive speed extends even to his bowing, one could be forgiven for thinking he has a train to catch!!

  • no wonder he walks off so quickly. appawling
