  • @RenegadeLulu I've read the its mostly men if the women were involed its for background singing but there is an all women one called Ngāti Porou haka "Ka Panapana". You can google Haka to learn more.

  • Ok, I'll admit that I'm not a huge rugby fan and I'm more of a footy girl (AFL) but I always watch the Aus VS NZ just to watch the Haka..n as much as I love Aus, I always go for All Blacks...just sayin'

  • Thanks for this post. It really helps one hear the correct annunciation of the words. (Its kind of hard to make it out when it is the whole all Blacks squad in front of 80,000 screaming fans......through the tv)....but still sounds damn good

  • i did the haka dance on the stage @ school

this kid started to cry! =(

  • Do you have a better way to say this chant? I really do love it and I do respect the old civilizations. Thank you.

  • beerrunner81, Thanks for putting the English translation

  • we are very proud people.....this is an anchient haka that needs to be respected and when it is performed, it should be done with a great presence by the performer and especially by the kaea (leader).

  • What is the leader yelling before "ringa pakia"...???

  • I lived in NZ for six months, in part to learn the Haka, and I must say that even though I am a Pakiha ,I like this video the most !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The words of the Ka Mater are as follows: Ka mate! Hi! I die! I die! I live! I live! I die! I die! I live! I live! This is the hairy man Who fetched the Sun And caused it to shine again One upward step! Another upward step! An upward step, another the Sun shines!

Nana nei i tiki mai, (literally the hairy man))

Whakawhiti te ra!(who has caused the sun to shine again)

Aue upane! Aue kaupane!(Up the ladder)

Aue upane, kaupane (Up and up)

Whiti te ra! (Into the light of the sun)

  • Ahhhhh traditionally, (And I am not really trying to be a smart alec here) it's only men who are supposed to do the Haka, matey...not women... <:)

  • no, women are allowed to haka. but women have their own way of doing the haka! not so manly, but fiest.

  • Haka's are the best!

  • im not kiwi butihav to say i luv watchin the haka

  • I dunno much bout NZ traditions, but could anyone tell me if they do the Haka only in rugby or they do it also in other sports? I mean, for example, would they do it also in an international football, cricket or basketball match?? I cant imagine New Zealand's national football team doing the Haka before a qualify match for the FIFA World Cup against Australia or whoever. I dont think FIFA would allow it, but would b so cool to c the Haka against Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Spain, France, England

  • basketball, hockey, rugby, as far as i know. tall blacks for basketball, ice blacks for hockey. but trust me, u'll just laugh ur ass off watching the other ones. stick with the rugby team for best haka.

  • the first half says it is life it is death

  • can anyone translate thati´d love to know what they say

  • im not entirely sure how this one goes but the ALL BLACKS is somethin lyk this: I die, I die! I live, I live! I die, I die! I live, I live! This is the hairy man The fierce powerful man Who fetched the sun And caused it to shine again One Upward Step! Another Upward Step! One last Upward Step! And Step Forth! The Sun shines!
  • YES! thats exactly it!i learned it at school and have desperately tried to remember the meaning of the words, i could remember i live, i live, i die i die, this is the hairy man but nothing else. its so fascinating to watch!!!

  • its Will i die, will i die, will i live, will i live. at the begining

  • hi i am the 8th generation descendant of Te Rauparaha the man who wrote this haka and it actually has a song version aswell same words and all but this was written to tell a storie of his survival in a little village around lake rotoaira not far from the mountin called Tongariro (Ngati Toa)

  • holy hell..lol......every time I hear this shit I start to feel like beatin somebody up or smashin somethin........this shit rocks the hell outta me...lol

  • that's the purpose of the haka, to build up frenzy before a battle. Imagine being the enemy and seeing/hearing the maori do that before they launch towards you at the size they are.

  • id poop all over the place.

  • ive' seen whale rider good movie & once were warriors and once were warriors :what becomes the broken hearted

  • tis a class ting da haka but i dont get it can nebody learn it or is it just the maori culture...explain cuz in fairness im irish lol

  • This is awesome!

  • dude we did the haka on brent school food festival desame as this song.

  • another new jersian just wanting to say- very powerful. and all blacks are damn great:)

  • Great vid bro!

  • aerdnas right (i'm a kiwi)

  • Actually, you're wrong. Women can do the haka. The haka is not a war dance, it's just a traditional dance used for many different purposes - celebrations, war and prayer. Because many people only see the Ka Mate version of the Haka, they only see A) Men doing it only (because it's a men's rugby team) and B) this version of it only, which is used as a form of intimidation.

    My dad's a Kiwi.

  • i learned this in school

  • im a brit, and i LOVE the all blacks. ive got friends who are from NZ, moved to UK and are now back in NZ

they got me into all blacks, and now i watch all there matches, i even know the haka off by heart =]

  • Im a Yankee from New Jersey and I love them. I now live in Sydney and I just got see it in action. Amazing!

  • yay you guys! im a kiwi...so i didnt no if ppl apreciated them in other countries or not.

  • hmm can some1 translate it to english lol2? if ye just send me that on pm

  • they say:

    I die, I'm alive

it is the hairy man who makes shine the sun again for me, a step to the top then another,

    the sun shine

  • this is a real rough translation but here goes "i live i live I could have died i could have died these hairy men chased me across the land but I defeated them under the watch of the god of the sun hi" legend has it that te rauparaha cheif of ngati raukawa ist did it after emerging from a hangi pit having outran a warring tribe.

  • Look i'm Aussie but i know a few things about the Haka. Look the Haka is a Maori tradition that the tribesmen in New Zealand did to tempt the enemy into combat. Look Euro girl21 it's tradition for the men to do it only because they've done it like for generations.and they think it's disrespectful if a girl or woman does it. So it's just their culture's view on it and i respect that. The Haka is only for Men of Maori descent or Pakia's in sporting teams only nothing else.

  • two things. firstly, you are wrong, there are many different versions of the haka, and some are performed exclusively by women, such as "Ka Panapana". secondly, stop using the word look at the start of every sentence

  • Your not Aussie because if you were you wouldnt get all that rubbsih wroung, would you?

Its a tribal dance that men AND women do. they use it in RUGBY to INTIMMIDATE their components.

My Aunty used to live in new zealand where she met a maori and they moved back to england together. so dont fink that by sayin ur aussie and saying all that RUBBISH about the haka makes people belive you.

[BTW, my uncle has taught me about the haka so thats why i know all of this OK??]

  • I assume you mean that they use the Haka to INTIMIDATE their OPPONENTS? Not, INTIMMIDATE their COMPONENTS??? PMSL

Well. I'm so sorry that I'm not perfect. Im incredibly sorry that im only human.

I didn't think it would bother someone that much. Of course, we can't make typing errors now can we? No, it's a criminal offence to some people.

I'm sorry that a few mis-spelled words can bother you that much. Boo hoo.

  • why cant the girls do it?

i mean, we are just as fierce if not fiercer than the boys :P

  • yeah but its there tradition you know

  • i knoww it just sucks :P

  • Still gives me goose bumps! everytime....

  • girls arnt allowed to do the haka. it sucks... haha but i still love it.

  • they can but not that particular one there are other ones that girls do

  • Re: kingdaniel's comment. Sure there has been LOTS of bad stuff in our history, but one of the MANY great things about our country is that we are working through issues of the past. In fact the way we have promoted and encouraged our indigenous culture, has pretty much establish us as the benchmark as the way to move forward and has been picked up by the indigenous people's North America. So all in all, spitting on people isn't the way forward, it's about working together to right the wrongs.

  • Yeah you gotta love the Haka. If i was Maori i'd spit on the white blokes doing it with their history over the indigenous population.

  • Um. Thats a bit harsh. Those things happened in the past. I KNOW that it was terrible & i KNOW that whites can never, ever say sorry enough. But everyone needs to move on. Really. What do you expect whites to do about it now? Its not like they personally did it. We cant pay for our ancestors mistakes forever...

Its people like you who are making it hard for different races to get along. Im not picking a fight. Im just saying. Move on..

  • HAKA...
