i don't mean to be cruel but in this scene i didn't see that great of acting for any one, and some of the moves where jerky. but the girl was an AMAZING singer!

The actress playing Maria had a great voice, but her delivery on the final monologue was poor. Its a very intense, heartbreaking scene and i feel like she left out about half of the emotion needed.

West Side Story was actually the first musical to not have a happy ending.

That's why it's such a big deal. This musical defied the previous rules for broadway musicals, and began a new age in musical theater.

Most musicals are like this now. West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked. None of them have truly happy endings.
