I would like you to help me with a little doubt, I live in Argentina and I would like to know how much Sun light do i have to give to it (It was bought 4 days ago and here it's summer so we have temperatures of around 27 ºC to 36 ºC)
i read somewhere that they only eat like 4-5 times in their lives and then the mouth falls off and they become a regular plant? it said it in a scientific way
Can anyone help me out? I own a Venus Flytrap, and its fine, I water her once a day, give her all the undirect sunlight she can get! And indeed she is growing, but growing only in numbers :/ the leaves and the plant itself wont grow any bigger! Can someone tell me what is going on with her?
1) dont have much sunlight.. would florecent lights due?
2) what happens in the winter when they die temporarly or hibernate -whatever- do i still water them untill the summer?
3) i understand that you really sholdnt use manure or anything like that.. but im puzzled because i dont have professional plant stores here where i live -egypt- can i just use beach sand? as somthing that has no nutriants or anything? or can i just use sand from a local park?
@beccaotaku I used to keep these and when i started i used to sit mine in a container of water so it was always wet and feed it a new fly a few days after the "mouth" opened from the last.
Or you could go nuts like i did and build a 4x4x4 fish tank with lights and a swamp for them with fish, plants and frogs and release flies into it and let them catch them themselves.
@expertvillage how long does it take for a venus fly trap to catch bugs I got a baby one in my local pet shop but I think they are very slow to grow am I right?
you do not have to feed it bugs. dionaea muscipula can go its entire life without eating a single bug, and still be healthy as can be :) it just needs the right watering, soil, and sunlight. idk about humidity... i live in arizona and mine seem to be adapting.
would if be ok to cut the heads off and let them grow back? mine are all messed up when i bought it the traps stay half open and are mangled....would it be possible just to cut them off and the plant will grow new ones????
Me and my girlfriend bought Venus Fly Traps at the home-depot about a 2 months ago and I've started to notice black dead edges appearing on older leaves, what's causing this...fungus? fluoride burn? I've only been giving it distilled water, but home-depot may not have been. I let it soak in water until it evaporates or gets used and then I let it dry out for a few days before re-watering.
Hey, try lowes. I have been going to lowes for many different types of carnivorous plants. They all ways have venus flytraps. You have 2 stores in your city as well as 3 more around the city. I also work at lowes.
See, what you want to do is impregnate a female human and let the plant suckle the milk from the breast, discarding the remaining baby. Leave a light on in your house all year long for this pint sized little attention whore, and every once in a while when a friend comes over, scream at them for touching it and wasting it's valuable plant energy when the leaves close. Don't forget to be a good little servant for this lazy plant and go gather up some insects. It's a plant, it can't hunt. ButYOUcan
@TheNepenthesVillosa Yeah! That's what I thought. (It says about root rot in the leaflet that came with the plant I got.) In fact, the guy said a few things that contradict what I read about venus fly trap care. Oh well!
my venus fly trap has mutated well not exactly more like adapted instead of rain water we give it boiled water put it under a heatlamp and feed it mini bits of chicken every ten hours
Hello people , I have bought some seeds of that plant , but im real scared to plant it and stuff coz im afraid to loose it because of my stupidness , and i really dont know how to just plant it ... so if any of u guys want to help me , please send me a message or somphin ! thxxx
@TheAfricanSoul That's the most common cause. Before attempting contact, you should feed it a big meal, and offer it some red wine. Dimming the lights and lighting some candles increases your odds of success, as does putting on some music. Preparation is key.
This video is wrong! Venus flytraps don't need a humid condition. They can be grown in less than 20% humidity and they die very easily if they are given lots of humidity as lots of deseases can attack them like fungus.
@firmware21 You CANNOT overfeed a venus flytrap. They just die for other people be cause they keep the soil too wet, they give them water which its ppm is higher than 50, they give them very little sunlight, they give it very humid conditions e.t.c.
@xXCrimsonVirtueXx That is not dieing of exhaustion! It dies if you feed all of the traps because during digestion in all of the traps, it doesn't have enough digesting liquidy things so the traps rot and they blacken and thats why peoples vfts die sometimes.
@istiefel222 No! if you fed it hamburger meat it would probably kill it! Venus flytraps like bugs eg: flys, spiders, mayflies, maggots.
Not beetles, because they have a hard shell that would be tough for the flytrap to digest after they snap shut. Not ants either because there to small. Anyways, bugs, feed them bugs!
yeah im really confused on the sunlight for 14hrs or more thing; i live in SoCal and we get about 13hrs and im rounding up, believe me. so idk if i can have them growing here lmao do i need like UV lights to grow them or something, in my closet? not that ive done that with other plants before; and also 14hrs of sunlight and a few months of 30-40 degrees? please tell me where you can get 14hrs or more of sunlight, and please tell me where you can get that with 30-40 degrees, im just curious
one misconception is that it is difficult to raise Venus fly traps but this is not true...all you have to do is give them constant sun, constant water, keep you house humid, and hand feed them insects...holy shit ill have a couple kids that sounds easier
@donjett you forgot: keep the temperature within a range of 30- 40 degrees 3 months out of the year, give them 14 HOURS of direct sunlight every day, leave them soaking in water at all times...
@donjett i sure hope it cause i bought one without knowing what the hell i need to do to take care of it....i mean...how the hell do i give it a lot of direct sun and keep it humid.....? pls help
@MrNoNaMe1107 actually...thats what I do in the winter...you take the plant out of the soil...trim off the dead leaves...put in a plastic bag...and I put mine in the crisper drawer of the fridge...now I only have two...but then I take them out in the spring replant them and they do great...had the same two plants for almost 6 years
screw that... my plant stays in my window with a wet rag over it at night. it can have all the flies it wants when i stick it in the living room... after it does it's job in my room damn pesty flies...
My flytrap recieves regular amount of sunlight (ranging from 6-10 hours per day) and it's grown considerably (in fact I have to get a new pot for it very soon).
I remember when i had one when i was a kid but then i didnt really understand how the plant worked lol so now im looking forward to my new one i orderd :)
I had VFs when I was a kid. Some thrived; some didn't. My most successful venture with this green predator came a decade ago when I left in out on my lawn. It was very happy and grew quickly, as every morning I would find it digesting mosquitos, flies and other bugs. I miss those days and I want to do it again!
I have a question. I've got a venus flytrap now for about 5 months but the stem isn't growing at all. And the time to bloom has come but the stem of my plant is turning dark at the tip (end). It kinda looks like a not fully burned match. Otherwise it's doing fine for as I can see. Anyway, what can be causing this odd phenomenon?
@lavonne427 there are some reasons why your fly trap didnt close.
1. The food didnt touch at least two striking points in the plants mouth. Look inside its mouth and look for some tiny needle like stuff in its mouth, make sure it touches them in a twenty sencond time lapses!
If anyone needs any info on carnivorous plants shoot me a message, I found a site that is full of the best info for all carnivorous plants, seriously.
I grow mine inside with 20-24 hours of light, I use distilled water on mine, and capture insects, arachnids with tweezers for them to eat. Mine are doing great, I love these things.
@pllows45 put the plant out early in the morning.. like around 6 when the sun has just come out... the 14 hours later.. uh around 7 pm? yea.. thats around 14 hours of sun (:
I would like you to help me with a little doubt, I live in Argentina and I would like to know how much Sun light do i have to give to it (It was bought 4 days ago and here it's summer so we have temperatures of around 27 ºC to 36 ºC)

My venus fly trap doesnt close anymore when i stick the insects in it but its still green. Whats the problem? Can anyone help me?
ludwighonda111 1 year ago
Maybe it's because the temperature is too low for the dioneae
or maybe the flytrap has already been closed several times and isn't active anymore, that normal

@ludwighonda111 uhhhh, its dormant now!

These plants are not hard to grow. You just have to understand what they like.
silvaramajere 1 year ago
That is why Its is a hard plant to grow. These plant only exist one place in the whole world and thats in the Carolinas
In the summer time 14 hours of sun is easy to achieve. sun comes up at 6:45 (about) and goes down at 8:30 (about) thats about 14 hours

I grow mine inside with 20-24 hours of light, I use distilled water on mine, and capture insects, arachnids with tweezers for them to eat. Mine are doing great, I love these things.

@weiliiiiiii well t will die then. they need a dormancy.
theamazingplant2 1 year ago
it is not dead, it has produced three new traps within the last two weeks, it is growing like crazy!!!
weiliiiiiii 1 year ago
@weiliiiiiii youre growing it in aterrarum? are you in the u.s.? if so, the humid will kill it. so how did dormancy go for you?
theamazingplant2 1 year ago
Yes in a terrarium, in the southeast, the humidity is good for it according to the International Carnivorous Plants Society.
There natural habitat is in the southeast, in marshy areas in SC mainly.

14 hous!!???!!! or more!!! do you have sun for the night in your world??
pllows45 2 years ago 54
@pllows45 14 hours isnt essential.
Im in SW England and i have several growing in a south facing window, and they are thriving already for the time of year.
10-12 hours of good light with 7-8 of that good sun seems ok for mine.
