  • I remember the first time I heard this song; I was at The Saint, and I nearly lost my mind...they segued directly into it from a song calle "Rain". I had such a good time back then...all those clubs, all those MEN. And, it was still like a secret society- a club we were all part of- we were the insiders, for the first time in our lives.

Then came AIDS...and the party ended.

    R.I.P.

  • I am so very saddened by the news of viola wills passing May 06, 2009, which I was unaware of until this very day today Monday, June 21, 2010, that I cannot hold back the tears which have welled up within my eyes. Her (Viola Wills) version of “If you could read my mind” ALWAYS got me and those I was with out onto the dance floor. Her (Viola Wills) version of “stormy Weather” is yet another of the same.

Stephen Wayne Reno Monday, June 21, 2010

  • @stephenwaynereno I'm not meaning this as being rude to you, but I ask this question to you. What do you mean by Her (Viola Wills) version ? They are all Viola Wills, to my understanding the version ( style ) R&B,

Disco, would be that of who Produced or Remixed the song.

  • @stephenwaynereno Stephen, I could not agree with you more. She will live on in my memory forever. She was my Trocadero queen.

  • i wish this kind of music will come back! good to hear, amazing melody and it makes me so happy!!! always love you viola!!!!!

  • @mtballers honey...this music never went away !!!its still in our hearts !! x

  • Greg's Blue Dot and the Circus Maximum here in Los Angeles . . . although Greg's wasn't a "dance" club, we did anyway when this came on . . .

  • They ought to put this out on cd for those who preform! I did this number on halloween night back at the carosel lounge complete with smoke machines and mirrors! Wish I had it on video!

  • Memories of the dance clubs in Seattle in the 80's. Excellent dance version!

  • me too...God me too, I hate being old...haha ....the ripe age of ________I can't even say it

  • I lived in San Francisco from 1980 to 1997 and used to work for Megatone records and Club Universe. This was a time that I cannot even put into words. I used to mix this with It's Raining Men by: The Weather Girls and people loved it!

  • dang, wish i could have been at yur club with that music..bet it was a gooood time.

  • I used to mix this at the point where the Weather Girls were doing the accapella & it sounded GR8 with the wind, rain & thunder sounds :-)

  • @minuim10 i jus KNEW her last name wasn't wills. wilkerson sounds familiar. thanks for the reminder. yes, rest sweet baby. you earned it.

  • @minuim10 That is sad. She would be 71, its hard to believe that much time has passed. I believe she also sang "Don't Stop the Train" she never got credit for, the song was listed as being sung by Phylis Nelson.

  • @RobD1932 Actually had the opportunity to enjoy Viola's company a couple of times in Miami. She was a wonderful woman.

  • Love every single song from her. I didn't know she had passed away. When?

  • I cried all day when I saw that she had died. I am so glad I wrote to her a year ago and told her how much I loved her. I will miss you till it's my turn. Thank you Viola xxoo

  • God, "Flashback"... I had this album... Toe' up the floor... I have no clue where the album ended up :(... but I got it here ..x0x0x Viola.

  • Wills died of cancer on May 6, 2009 in Arizona at 8:27am Pacific Time.[7] Wills leaves behind six children; Vincent, Christopher, Regina, La Donna, David and Rejal, 21 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Viola was just 69 years old.

  • now this is music.. she will be sadly missed, as will phyllis hyman.. both were true and pure talents

  • when did she pass ...? can anyone tell me for sure?

  • I saw her live at roseland in nyc in the mid 90's! i love viola wills! RIP!!!! your forever fan!!!

  • During a time of immense happiness and then during it's demise your voice brought to us reassurance, pride, memories of those no longer with us, but most of all courage to live, dance and enjoy life. Thank you Viola. Rest in Peace!

  • what an amazing talent and such charm and grace,i had the distinct pleasure of meeting vi in nyc, during her reign,a gifted artist with a voice that could charm angels, rip vi,i miss you always, your music lives in my heart

  • I did teared up those dance floors in San Diego, while going to college I saw her live at Mr.Dillons on Hillcrest, boy did I danced the night away but of course it was the disco era. Long live the 80s.

  • The lovely voice of one of the reigning Queens of Disco has unfortunately been silenced. Beautiful almond-eyed, and exquisitely exotic Viola Wills died this first week in May in Arizona after a long struggle with Leukemia.

Vi was discovered by the late soul maestro, Barry White, in their native Los Angeles in the mid-sixties after she had already had her six children at an early age.

  • RIP Viola Mae Wilkerson (Viola Wills), singer, songwriter: born Los Angeles circa 1940; twice married (twice divorced, six children); died Phoenix, Arizona 6 May 2009.

  • you made me gay proud viola; be proud while you march to the big disco ball in the sky...

  • My friend, Viola. She came and gave the show of shows to support HIV back when, because we asked her. She braved disregard to do this, and I love her. Viola! Thank you! Look out for us!

  • RIP Viola! This was the first extended mix I ever bought, the first break up anthem, my realization of lifestyle change, my favorite song. I am truly saddened and that sayin' lots because I am an evil bitch!

  • RIP True Diva

  • Viola..,we miss you already but you & your music will always live in our gay hearts and minds.

    We Love you...!!!

  • The Florentine Club in Shreveport, Louisiana!!

  • Is the Florentine still the gay club in Shreveport? I remember when it opened in 1973 - what a great place! I used to love it!

  • No, unfortunately the Florentine closed down years ago. That old mansion has changed hands a few times since then and has now fallen into serious disrepair. Too bad...it's a GORGEOUS old house!!

  • I found this post because I was googling "The Florentine." I used to have so much fun at The Florentine back in the early 80's... right after high school and omg.. this song was such an anthem!.. Wow great memories!

  • The Florentine was a great club and although it's now closed, it's a legend in Shreveport! You and I have probably seen each other...I came out at the same time you did! I was at The Florentine EVERY weekend...and sometimes during the week!

  • I have a special memory of this song. I danced to it at a Tea by the Sea in Key West, Florida, a tea dance held on a pier adjacent to the ocean. On the horizon, summer lightning was lighting up the night sky. To the best of my memory, it was the summer of 1982 and I was 22.

  • Danced to this song all night long at the Reno V.I.P. Club; club, bar, bathhouse...what more could you want?

  • MarioReno2, hahaha.

  • Scorpio Lounge in Charlotte, NC always played this song.

  • what great clubbing memories of the 80's! Thanks!

  • This song brings back great memories of The Armory and Backstreet in Atlanta! Wow! What a song and oh the fun!!!

  • 70sdiscoretro, for me it was Greg's Blue Dot, Circus Maximus, The Detrour, Studio One, all here in Los Angeles.

  • I've never been to LA. I have a friend who is an actor who lives in West Hollywood. I am pretty much a southern boy now living in South Florida.

  • The Detour, Circus Maximum, The River Club, The Other Side, Cuffs, The Ram Rod (ouch), Spikes, The Farm, Butch Gardens, The Jungle, The Apache, all in L.A.

  • I used to love hearing this at "Church."

  • Wow haven't heard of those clubs in a long tiome. I loved them both and the armorettes where a hoot. Loved bulldog too. Do you remember two entertainers Chuck Blair and Ryan Wilcox?

    Just curious

    Ryan Wilcox

  • The name sounds familiar but I am not sure. You must have been one of the entertainers there. I used to go to the Armory with friends and then over to Backstreet. I really liked Backstreet because it was big and had a lot of room. Do you still live in Atlanta? I now live in South Florida. I love the beach and weather down here.

  • VIola is the BOMB!!! I had the chance to hang out with her last year, in lauderdale but had a prior committment, now im kicking myself!

  • It's a shame you were not able to do that. Sadly, Viola passed away on May 6th after a brief illness. I will cherish her music always.

  • Memories..... close my eyes... and dance... see you all ... my friends... still dancing on the dance floor of the Saint and 12 West... love you all.... miss you.
