  • I remember, 12 noon everyday with Ted Collins her announcer.

  • maybe ifyou put this on the teleprompter, numbnutz could mumble the words?? On second thought....screw him! He is gone this year for good anyway!

  • I hear this every 7th inning stretch at Yankee Stadium... Love it

  • Would anyone have a copy of her version of 'If He Walked Into My Life' - PLEASE!!! I know it exists and I cant find it anywhere.

  • Awesome!

  • we surely did not give our children the same morality our parents gave us , What Happened ?, we seem to have fell asleep at the moral switch when we let them take prayer out of school and the Ten Cammandments off the walls of our court houses , at the very least the old ones should vote for Ron Paul and give our young a fighting chance

  • Kate Smith also helped the Philadelphia Flyers win more than a few games back in the day by singing this song!

  • I shall always remember Kate Smith, her TV show and this as the closing number. It takes me back to my childhood and early television.

  • Great historical video. I think the US should change its National Anthem to God Bless America, it is more beautiful and peaceful tham bombs bursting in air and rockets red glare, in my opinion.

  • @henavarrete you will have to wait until after the second comming when there truely is peace through-out the world

  • Indeed, our precious Kate, God bless America!! MY home!!!!!

  • This song allways makes me teary eyed.

  • Smurfsniffer needs to buy a history book. We fought the Spanish American War, 1812, war with Mexico, enforced the Monroe Dictrine, Western Theater WWII,..

To say we were independently operating in Vietnam and Korea is pure ignorance.

  • Lil Wang. Could it be that you and your indecipherable run-on sentence are just insanelyjealous?

  • @RomMechEng - Kudos to you! So many people who write on these blogs wouldn't even know the difference between good and poor grammar and spelling. By the way, when did the words a lot become one word? Have you noticed that this illiterate person thinks the word is alot? (As do many others!) How mabout the difference between your and you're? These jerks don;t know the difference.

  • @shillinginc everyone wanted a national education board , politically correct academically inferior , I've been Watching , the ONLY STATE with the courage to fight Back is Texas , they fought over every word in their text books for their youth and won , if we don't elect Ron Paul as President , we can say goodbye to everything including the soul of our nation , we gave up our morality and lost our Constitution , we have to hope and pray he wins and teach our young about decency

  • @shillinginc While we're on the subject, you ever notice how many people use 'then' when they should use 'than' and vice versa . I see it so much that I'm beginning to think that I may be the one that's wrong.

    P.S.

By the way, I had to go to my dictionary on that new word 'mabout' ......hee hee...just kidding!

  • GOD BLESS AMERICA MY HOME SWEET HOME.

  • @smurfsniffer Looks like smurfs is not all you've been sniffing...speaking of 'down '..how about mother Russia's record???

  • smurfsniffer, ♥♥♥Capitalism means that you would have had a chance...communism means you didn't ♥♥♥

  • @4BigTex lol i dont understand.... <:c probaly makes alot of sense but if your saying what i think ur sayin they went down cause noone traded with them

  • @smurfsniffer Russia lost the Russo-Japanese War, the Crimean War, the Russian war with Afganistan (which is known as the "Soviet's Vietnam War), and the Cold War where their entire government collapsed under a failed Communist/Socialist system.

  • @HipWilson The Afghans attacked Soviet boundaries, they tried to do it with less supplies and less food than any army today, the goverment wasn't even meant to be there this was because of Western ideals slipping into the minds of the Communists.

  • @HipWilson yes Americans lost Korean war, and Vietnam that was the only two independent wars they fought.

  • @linwooddeaton Then tell that to Obama and the leftists who politic from the altar.

  • This video includes film clips from a World War II movie called "This Is The Army". The score was composed by Irving Berlin.

Yes, that was Ronald Reagan at 4.27. He was one of many starts in this movie.

  • Love and pride in my heart and a tear in my eye.

  • It is sometimes hard to remember that it is the American individual that makes this country great and not our corrupted, self serving, political leadership.

  • And look who's playing Reagan's father - it's George Murphy, begorra , who went on to get elected as Senator from California! BTW, Woody Guthrie, who was a Communist, didn't believe in God, and wrote This Land Is Your Land as a response to Berlin's epic.

  • @mameliga1 George Murphy (Reagan's father) is playing Irving Berlin. He wrote "God Bless America" in 1917 and then tucked it away until Kate Smith asked in 1940 for something to restore faith and pride in America as war looked more and more certain for America. The recording of Kate Smith is the first time she sang the song. It is interspersed in this clip in a 40's movie called "You're in the Army Now."

  • I'm not an American but this songs makes me cry!

  • that's right 5:09 that's the right thing

  • @cg707 I agree however I sure do try

  • This is my very favourite song and I sing it often at church and very loudly at the ball field. When I sing a solo - I always include the verse and I have been told that I sound a lot like Kate Smith which to me is a great honour. I love this song and always will, especially when Kate siings it.

    Barbara Urey

  • They need to play it every day like they used to

  • He said to Ronald Reagan that he threw it out of 'Yip Yap' in 1922..Kate Smith introduced it in 1937..she died 25 years ago in 1986...Grand Lady

  • I believe the first time she sang this was 1936.

  • I cannot help but notice, there is a Gentleman reading the paper at 4:22, is that Ronald Reagan?

  • @sbalsai88 No doubt about it. That is for certain Ronald Reagan. If the picture wasn't enough, that voice is a absolute give-away.

  • This tops them all.

  • That song was originally written when we watered the tree of LIBERTY with the flower of our youth in 1917 , we knew who our enemies were , now it seems the enemy now is in Washington itsself , WE THE PEOPLE have only one Statesman left to sit in the oval office , if we have the courage to cross party lines and elect him , RON PAUL in 2012 , lets see a thumbs up from the senior 's before the last full measure of your devotion flickers out, think of your grand children and their future

  • wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Patriotism, what a great feeling! Thank you so much for this video. We need more of them

  • God Bless America, Irving Berlin.....and the incomparable Kate Smith.....

  • God Bless America ☮ David Harrison Levi - STARMAKER☆ red carpet worldwide events for Breast Cancer Awareness --

  • Kate Smith - what a beautiful song and such a tremendous voice - always loved Kate Smith and especially this song. We should all be singing this today and always.

  • she is everything that I love about America, from Australia.

  • at 4.27 that just must be Ronald Reagan!

  • @mk5336 You are correct. That is indeed Ronald Reagan. Who would've thought when this was made that less than 40 years later, he would be President.

  • Why is it we want honest Government and yet we elect either people who don't care or crooks , we have an Honest Candidate in Ron Paul and yet the media tries to hide him WHY?

  • Thank you for the advice ... Now, go take a bong-hit and tell that to the illegal aliens

  • I LOVE this - the song as well as the visual clip. Also, the only extra weight that Kate seems to show is below her chin .. other than that she's a most beautiful woman! God bumps when listening and watching this clip. Sure wish that THIS song would be our nations' national song!! So much easier to sing and the words totally lift and individual heart and soul!

  • @cathml

I have always loved this song and have never understood why it isn't our National Anthem. Kate Smith was an amazing artist and makes your heart swell with every note. jazzer959

  • Respond to this video... This is a fantastic clip that takes us back to a time that few people remember.

  • @jazzer979 people who don't learn from the past are destined to repeat it , I read a book called Man, greed and the economy it talked about a way around where we are headed ,

  • This makes me cry! i love KATE!! She was the rare talent that is AMERICA!!!!!

  • The original was 1919. It was rewritten in 1938.

  • I wrote a song back in the 90's, Happy Birthday Jesus. Kate sang it on one of the last long play records before tapes became so popular. the record had several different artist on it. I cant even find my record but I have the contract:)

  • When the Japanese and the Nazi's heard this song Hilter and the head Tojo said F&(^ were going to lose this war! GOD BLESS AMERICA

  • For the longest time I thought this song should be our NEW national anthem. The Star-Spangled Banner is outdated, it glorifies and ancient battle, the melody is from an old ENGLISH drinking song!!! God Bless America has a majestic and beautiful melody, and it reflects how the AMERICAN people, not our government, feel about our country. So folkes... how about it.

  • @GhostmanDBP My national anthem is a plaintive story about surviving despite overwhelming odds. And it has explosions. And no imaginary friends from religions me and many Americans are not part of.

No offense to this song or your personal beliefs, but don't push your agenda on the rest of us.

  • @GhostmanDBP not to mention this song is easy to sing. The Star-Spangled Banner is very difficult for ordinary people to sing.

  • America's own -- yesterday, today and always. GOD BLESS AMERICA !

  • @ernstbecker1 Interesting then that it was written by a Russian-born Jew :)

  • I remember seeing Kate Smith for the first time in a newsreel in a movie from . . . well, around 1973 or so. The funny thing is, I don't remember the name of the movie, but certainly do remember that wonderful, rich voice filling the theater with her stirring rendition of the song. Thanks for posting the clip!

  • Cameo @ 4:20 by former prez Ronald Reagan

  • Brought tears to my eyes. Wonder why the first lines were dropped.

  • Once Upon a time in America? This song is almost the cherry on top.

  • The first part it is beautiful as the second part that mostly singer today are missing. What a shame. While the storm clouds gather far across the sea. Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free.

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair. As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

  • God Bless America, more than ever needed today!!

  • There was a movement to make "God Bless America", our National Anthem, but Irving Berlin was against it. He said, "there can only be one National Anthem."

    And we already have one,

I am in favor of at least making this a co-anthem. "God Bless America" has original music and it's a positive salute to America without the mention of war.

Thanks for the memories and the post.

  • No one can sing this wonderful song like Kate...

  • Great Video !

  • Thank you for posting such a beautiful rendition of this wonderful song.

No matter how many stormy clouds form, America will survive and strife.

May God bless our young men and women in harm's way, and may God bless the U-S-A.

  • 12:00 Noon and one of my 3 sister said quiet Kate Smith is coming on and Ted Collins her announcer would introduce her and as a kid I got to love this grand lady. What a time in America, a time of beautiful music and at a time when we were fighting for survival during the depression and the war was about a year away. Back then the same people that tell us today to mind our own business have done it again, war is on the Horizon. "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition and we'll all stay free"?

  • Did anyone notice Ronald Reagan towards the end of this video?

  • There have been few as patriotic as this great lady....

  • I belive that the announcer said at the beginning of the video this it was the 21st anniversary of the Nov 11, 1918 World War I Armistice. That would be Nov 11, 1939. World War II had just started in Europe on Sep 1, 1939 between Germany, Britain and France.

  • According to Wikipedia, Kate Smith first sang "God Bless America" in 1938.

  • Very nice

  • Comment removed

  • @shenadoa Yes

  • GOD BLESS AMERICA...PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Though Kate's weight was always mentioned though it did nothing to diminish her career or her star, what is seldom mentioned is she was nearly six feet tall, which contributed visually to the sense she was larger than life. As a singer she was one of a kind, a total natural with a beautiful and strong voice, a terrific sense of rhythm and tempo and a passion for telling a story through the lyrics, giving everything she sang the greatest feeling. An unsurpassed gem.

  • I am a VERY patriotic person. I love America. Unfortunately, my family and professional life has planted me in Europe. I follow the news very closely from unbiased European sources, (mainly because most American sources are in the pockets of one or the other political party.)

If the current power struggle does not stop and the politicians don't pull thier heads out of their posteriors, America is going to lose much of what it took more than 200 years to build.

    Just saying...

  • Still the best! And Reagan's in that clip too!

  • @SanDiegoMinutemen It's over 70 years old, Zippy.

  • How many people think Kate Smith is the best singer for GOD BLESS AMERICA in history. Thank you Kate Smith.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS HER ALLIES!

  • Goosebumps

  • Great song ,Beautiful Voice ,Great music, Who cares if Irvin was Jewish , all these so called Christians complaining about Jews, it's a shame if I'm not mistaken Jesus was a Jew , or at least that is what it says in the Bible!!!!

  • We need to unite our country again,,,like they did when this song was new. God Bless America,,,we need all His blessings & strength!!!

  • You know, I didn't know she had an opera-singer build until just now. It does make sense, though.

  • This song is fantastic and brings forth a sense of patriotism for the United States of America, but I'm disappointed that our politicians, and many Americans themselves, have forgotten about patriotism. It seems that most of our politicians and many Americans are so willing to give our country away to illegals storming our borders and persons of a "religion" foreign to our ways. For this, I am afraid for America and very disappointed in our politicians - in all parties.

  • Ronald Reagan is the most famous person of the greatest generation and that is why liberals tell all the lies about him today.liberals hate our greatest generation and they figure if they can bring down the greatest icon [Reagan] our country can be destroyed. the fact that Reagan won the cold war disturbs commie-nazi liberals. and i see there are twenty three people who hate the u.s. Alan Keyes for president in 2012!

  • God Bless all you Americans and all the troops serving and who have served.

  • Was that Ronald Reagan at 4 mins 20 seconds?

  • @paulbriggsy Yes, that was Ronald Reagan.

  • @Tarn1968 You are WRONG. Ben Franklin was not an Atheist. He became a born again Christian. TJ was a diest, but we dont know his true beliefs, he did believe in the Bible and its principles. George Washington was a Christian, as were many many many of our Founding Fathers. Yes, we are a Christian nation. God Bless America!

  • God and country, such a problem.

Snippets from our Declaration of Independence,

“Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them”

“that they[men -mankind] are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”

Believing in God or a god or superior being and Christianity is often confused with the beliefs of organized churches. Many of our “Founding Fathers” has strong contentions with some of the controlling organized churches, not so much Christianity.

    @VASINGER

  • @Newmans2001 You're getting into semantics there. It clearly states that we were created with certain inalienable rights. Christianity was at the forefront of the foundation of the United States Of America. That doesnt mean we're some crazy terrorist nation. Quite the opposite.

  • Amen to that!! Well said!!

  • Amen to that!!

  • I would like to respond to Maglioso. There have been many who have served this great country, past and present. None of us are perfect, and many if not every President has done things that some did not like. But the brave men and women who do serve our country do it to preserve our rights and there are many of them. One of those rights is to be able to leave if you do not like how things are done here. So if you do not like how things are done, I suggest you exercize that right.

  • What year did Kate Smith introduce this song? I am hard of hearing and couldn't

understand what the announcer said. Please answer. July 4,2011 us when I'm writing.this.

  • @Tiger88873 He said 21 years after the WW I armistice was signed so I'm guessing 1939.

  • @Tiger88873

The original intro was on Armistice Day, 1938. This recreation was from a film, "This is the Army" in 1943

  • @Tiger88873 According to the anouncer, it is the "21st anniversary of the armistice of WWI". The armistice was the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Twenty-one years after that would make it November 11th, 1939. However, it WAS revised on 11-11-38.

  • did anyone else know this was a written as a prayer? On the evening of 9/11/01, congress on the steps of the capitol, started to sing this song (and I think rightly so!) and now it's song as an intro to the seventh inning stretch in baseball. wait a minute! I think I just let the cat out of the bag! do you think some atheist org. will now sue MLB for violating some political correct unwritten rule about praying in public and offending them?

  • God Bless America!!

  • One of my all-time favorite movies, and I love Kate Smith. I think I was born about a hundred years too late.

  • GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!

  • I loved seeing a young Ronald Reagan in this!

  • It's fitting that the last decent President this country had (Ronald Regan) is in this film.

It's also a damn shame we've fallen so far, since this film debuted, however, that's what happens when a country turns it's heart away from God. We have become a vulgar, crass, anti-God nation and we are going to continue reaping the consequences until we turn back to Him. And, if we don't, we are doomed.

  • Kate Smith was one of a kind and no one will ever sing that song like she did.

God bless America this July 4th, 2011. I love my country and I am proud to be

    an American.

  • @Fegen Was it Ronald Reagan at 4:18? Thanks for sharing, John.

  • @CeeCeeable...... I remember as a young kid watching This Is The Army and this song always stood out!

  • I remember Kate Smith singing God Bless America at the Phila Flyers games. It got to be a "good luck charm." Google Kate Smith and the Philadelphia Flyers. It's an amazing story.

  • save private ryan!!

  • watch?v=iK7SRYp4sBc

The Death of American Democracy must be considered as we celebrate our founding principles and values. Since 9/11, this is no longer the land that was promised to me as a youth.

The enemies are inside the gates. America cannot survive unrecognized, rampant treason.

As the forces of evil are vanquished, we can again celebrate as in the times of Kate Smith.

  • God bless America . We can save her from the forces of evil ; I promise.

  • PERFECT!!!

  • No one can do this better than Kate Smith

  • from the mountains to the prairies, to the SOLDIERS FAR FROM HOME, god bless our soldiers for our freedom, America, our Home Sweet Home. Have a wonderful 4th of July, I can hear the firecrackers in the background already! Man can she sing,God Bless America, the best version ever.

  • 4:20 WOW! An appearance by out future great President, Ronaldus Magnus !

  • Outstanding! Kate was great!

  • No one sings it like Kate! I used to hear them play this on the radio in Philadelphia every day at 3pm. I wonder if they still do that..

  • I miss the America that this was about. :(

  • @ktcoolh

Were you alive during the two World Wars? something tells me you weren't lol

  • Her singing is great because she follows the notes and does not embellish what is simply beautiful in its simplicity............

  • @Tarn1968 And you can say that because you're an American. We are a country of many cultures and beliefs. It's what makes us great. You might not believe in this god but surely you can understand the sentiment of the song. That's the important thing./ It was a frightening time for America going into WW2 and this song helped people remember what America was about. My dear brother sent me this, this morning. I need to be reminded at times what we DO have. :) Songs

  • Written by Irving Berlin, sung by Kate Smith. With the royalties from the song donated to the Boy Scouts of America. Compared to the greed of the music conglomerates of today, it's amazing! God Bless Kate Smith and Irving Berlin! True patriots in a sea of wannabees.

  • @sharkatw BRAVO ! Well said.

  • @sharkatw Irving Berlin walked with God , why do think he lived to be 101

  • People used to make fun of Kate Smith, because she wasn't small or petite. But' her voice was an absolute beacon. Many have tried, but cannot match this performance of "God Bless America" As a former US Army musician I have personally watched fall on thier prats trying to do it. Go getem Kate!!

  • Please stand for Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America.

  • @Tarn1968

That's THE America that I had the privilege to visit a couple of times. NYC&Chicago were best, plus Utah&Arizona for my own touristic purposes. And I've been to Memphis, Tennessee, well New Orleans got me out of my depression on that business-trip. Great Place to leave the bible belt. Dear greetings from Berlin, Germany :)

  • Thank you KATE SMITH FOR YOUR LOVELY VOICE and BRIGHTING UP OUR SPRITS WITH GOD BLESS AMERICA! GOD BLESS AMERICA MY HOME SWEET HOME!

  • If all those who dislike this video would please move out of our country and leave it for those of us who appreciate it, it would be a better, more peaceful place! GO NOW!!

  • @mntison How Un-American of you...

  • @Tarn1968, yes God Bless America and all the Americans that have died believing that yes, God has blessed America. I can remember when on Sundays all stores were closed but all churches were open no matter what church one went to. Why we have "IN God We Trust" on our monetary currency and in our court houses There must have been a reason for this otherwise it would have nevered been allowed.

  • The current President has changed America for the worse...this was the root of our greatness, now we are falling head first into oblivion

  • @retiredchief1 He had plenty of help from past administrations. The usurpation of The Constitution and our GOD given FREEDOM started long before the latest POTUS came on the scene. He's just another in a very long line of puppets. This song though, fills more than my eyes. It fills my chest and helps me remember what the TRUE AMERICAN HERITAGE is. And I can tell ya, it left D.C (District of Criminals) long ago. Speak out, ask questions, be prepared to defend you and yours. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

  • @65dmack

Anthony Weiner put a new spin on America today as did Wrangel, and quite a few others, this administration is working hard at pealing away at the American Heritage

  • @retiredchief1 God forbid a re-election of the current POTUS, but remember it's THEIR CANDIDATE either way. As long as they keep us looking left and right, they will continue to "give it to us" right down the middle.

I'll be voting for Ron Paul, who you can research and try to find where he has ever flipped on any subject. Look up how he used to berate the federal reserve back in the '80's. His stance has not changed. He supports FREEDOM and LIBERTY above all else, a Constitutional REPUBLIC.

  • @65dmack I agree that RON PAUL is the only one who can help us now. Please God, give us Ron Paul. And please remember to always bless this country, which I love.

  • This song is offensive to the closet born deviates, a time that lead to our greatness today, when all else fails, return to these roots and America will prosper again.

  • As a child, I remember Kate Smith singing that on the radio. It was a different world then. I could relate to nearly all the vignettes in the video. Bitter sweet memories

  • Yeah, those were the good old days. Great Depression and a World War. Spike Jones and the City Slickers. Now that was real music, no techno crap! Oh yeah, and marzy doats and doesy oats. Great music!

  • Absolutely ridiculous comment, IveGotYourChange. This song is now sung at baseball games, hockey games, and everywhere else. Why be so unhappy when listening to this great version of a great song?

  • Worth the time

  • snurrrrkkkkkk!!!!

  • Mr. or Miss I'veGotYourChange seems to be seriously deluded. The song is NOT illegal. No one says it offends Muslims--most of whom really do not do anything wrong--because they too believe in God. I feel so sorry for people who write such things. Their lives must be very sad indeed.

  • If one cannot swear alligiance to the land of the free then they should consider why are they here. This country was founded on God given principles and from George Washington and many other presidents whose Bibles are still preserved Americans should be pround to be in this great country and those that think different should relocate.

  • Egyptians, communists, and Muslims need to go die

  • We the People must pray for America and Our Troops around the world. Who truly believe in America. LAPA.

  • We will continue to be a beautiful country. We have lots to be thankful for like our freedom. This is the time for Americans to speak out....why because we can!

Let's not lose this song & that feeling..

  • Who is that guy at 4.22?

  • @TheGapminder It's some guy they called.. "the gipper" or something in his later years.

  • @viruscauser The person you're asking about at 4:22 is Ronald Regan...

  • @secretsofmakeupxx That's what I said - The Gipper. ;>)

  • @viruscauser The person you're asking about at 4:22 is Ronald Regan...

  • @viruscauser It's Ronald Reagan He became our President in his later years!!!

  • Its too bad such a beautiful country that is now pretty much destroyed. All the foreign private banks and elites destroyed this country through their conquest of globalism. The United States is bitterly hated around the world because these assholes. They hid like cowards behind the political curtain while everyone else to the heat. The good news is now these cowards are loosing and American patriots are gaining ground across the country. Now that is the comforting fact. The cowards will lose.

  • This is true America. If you don't love this. Go the hell home. FAST you don't belong here to enjoy the american way.

  • We don't realize how lucky we are. Freedom is a privelege that was earned on the battlefield. I should know, my father's cousin died so we could keep it....in Vietnam. Never forget what the cost of freedom is, many people died to keep it. We are very lucky indeed. I'd give my life in a second, if it meant everyone else could remain free.

  • Still a moving song by a fresh, powerful voice! And, catch the parallel with today's times in the movie ...as well as the brief appearance in the clip by a former President...

  • I remember so well my oldest sister turning on the Kate Smith hour at 12 Noon.I watched people in a tough situation (the depression) enjoying beautiful music. I feel lucky to have and still do enjoy this kind of music. The computer has been a boon because I can find all the good music. In that time period I was to see pot bellied men go away and come back on leave remrod straight. I knew these men because I shined their shoes. Mikey D

  • A tear came to my eye--I love this country.
