If I pay $4 grand for something it better do everything I want without pedals! If I need pedals I'll just buy a cheaper tube amp and with pedals make it sound as good. That's me personally. $4 grand is a ton of money and I play 3 hours a day and wouldn't drop that much on a amp.
@Megathrasher1975 I agree that I don't think it's 'quite' worth what you pay, particularly in the US. But it's built like a tank with a bucket-load of switching options & it absolutely slays. I demo'd amps for months before settling with the VH4. The only problem with it is that it's so underpant-shittingly loud, that I almost can't justify owning it now i'm not in a touring band. If I flog it, i'll probably go down the Axe-Fx route for home use.
Should a $4000 amp really need a tubescreamer to sound good? I can honestly say that with my Fryette a Maxon OD doesn't make is sound better. But while listening I didn't look back to see what was going on until he turned on the tube screamer. So many amps sound better than this, granted this could be an EQ problem.
@mattchavie When you push your amp's pre-amp (channel) gain, it eventually breaks up & loses focus & clarity. One purpose of a tube screamer is to drive your input signal so that you can roll back on the channel's pre-amp gain. The result being a crisp, compressed, focused high-gain tone. It cannot be achieved any other way & has a specific application outside of the amp's electronics. Simply put, why did you buy a maxon overdrive pedal if you have no idea what it's used for?
@Barefoot67 You're comparing the playing in this vid to Pink Floyd? That's a bit unfair. Go see a Suffocation show after watching Pink Floyd and see how you feel then.

@YouSoundButtHurt You need to have a go on one bro. Don't let this video put you off. It's a really killer amplifier. One of the best in the business, truly.

@HollaJo3 i like alot of controls as long as they affect my tone. i dont want a bunch of noise gate shit or "built in effects." i never ever use the effects on my marshall avt, i have a digitech for that. but youre right even with all the stuff on it it sounds amazing
These are good demonstrations of how well the amp retains its definition at crazy high gain levels. It's not my thing at all, but it does a great job at what it does.
You should try making those chords on anything but his tuning. Hell i bet you can't even get your hand in the right shape even if you tried it in his tuning.
@molomono i can play them easily, and it's not that difficult to make those riffs sound good. especially buried under all that gain. i've been playing for 15 years, and the only reason i've had to tune down was to play lower notes, not to simplify my playing. if i have a hard time playing something, i practice til i get it right. i don't compensate with alternate tunings if i don't have to. i'm not saying the dude can't play. just saying he has the benefit of a whole extra string. use it.
Pay attention and you might notice that some of these chords can't be played if you aren't in a drop tuning. 6:06 for example
It's not to make it easier, it's to make it possible. This is something i'd expect a 15 year veteran to understand in the blink of an eye, i'm self taught been playing not even 3 years. Why do i have to spell this shit out for you?
@molomono so what you're saying is, i've been playing 5 times longer than you, and you presume to tell me what's possible on a guitar and what isn't?
listen, junior. when you take off your training wheels, and start dribbling in the potty like a big boy, i'll let you tell me what can and can't be done when i pick up my guitar.
@joeysimmen No i mean look at his middle finger, it's bridging the 5th and 6th strings. All other fingers are being used.
How could he play that chord in anything but a drop tuning?
Also, you statements have no backbone, i'll believe you have played for 15 years be it on and off or serious all throughout. But don't push it, you don't have any videos so i don't have to believe that your internet persona portrays yourself realistically.
@molomono it has nothing to do with persona. i have no videos up because i don't have a video camera, and if i did, i wouldn't be so self absorbed to think the world cares to watch me play.
i'm not here to argue (although, let's be honest, it is fun at times), i'm just saying that those chords are not only possible to play, but could be played easily by a seasoned guitar vet.
i still see shit on youtube that seems impossible to me but its being done.
@joeysimmen Okay, I just read your argument with Molomono and felt the need to say something. He's not saying those chords are impossible to play. INSTEAD, he is saying that when in a dropped down tuning certain chords can't be played NORMALLY. EXAMPLE: A power chord on the top two strings residing on the 5th and 7th frets (standard) would turn into just barring the 5th fret on the top 3 strings in a dropped tuning. The same chord is being played, but hand position and tuning are different.
@joeysimmen I don't need to elaborate, it was explained quite nicely by Sanctusdead.
And even if this whole powerchord thing was irrelevant, why tune a guitar standard when the whole song is easier to play in drop tuning?
From a musicians point of view, (surprisingly not yours after 15 years of playing) it's like giving yourself a musical limitation. IMO if you want to make music remove those limitations, if you want a challenge go play rockband or guitar hero.
@molomono i challenge myself to grow as a musician.
we're getting off point. i use drop d if needed when standard tuning just isn't low enough, but if i had a 7th string, i wouldn't need to tune down.
i'm not limiting myself. learning these chords in standard as well as drop d expands my ability while playing at concert pitch. in the event i'm playing a song that calls for D, i'll welcome the rest, but if i were to settle just playing whats easier, i wouldn't be half the player i am today.
@molomono minus the 7th string, it's drop d. don't sugar coat it. it's not "custom".
honestly, he's a decent guitarist, but nowhere good enough for you to dickride him this hard. this is whats wrong with "metal" these days. everyone so concerned about heaviness, gear, breakdowns, etc, that everyone's forgotten how to write a decent song or memorable solo. its generic crap.
you like complicated metal? listen to BTBAM
this guys not doing anything new, special, or memorable. all i hear is gain.
@joeysimmen I'm sorry but no, a 7 string drop tunning is dropping the low string.
It's not Drop D it's e, b, G, D, A, D, B tuning.
And i agree he isn't the best guitarist but you are extremely ignorant on the things he has done, in the world of metal he is probably in the top 5 most influential guitarists at this point in time. You might want to look into his work it's a further development on the Tech metal genre. It's a polyrhythmic style, not at all simplistic.
@joeysimmen And i really don't want to continue this conversation with you, as much as i love BTBAM (my absolute favorite progressive metal band) i don't think it's fair to say their music is more complicated, Periphery has 3 guitarists for a reason.
In all respect i just want you to appreciate misha for what he does, not liking the guy is at your own expense. Look up Bulb - Strizzwald it's a good example of what he does just listen to all tracks not just the distorted track.
These demos never do justice for Misha's playing...I swear he really didn't like being there because the look on his face is always "God, am I done yet". Misha is a incredible guitarist. If people think he sucks then they should go watch him playing somewhere else...because this isn't we're you're going to find his best playing...especially sense I think it's kinda out of his comfort zone. He's not a amp demoing person. And the Ty dude IMO, is a total tool bag.
As a lifelong user of Seymour Duncans, I was surprised to think that Misha's Dimarzios sounded miles nicer. Are the guitars being used of comparable tonewoods and construction? I am surprised at such a difference...
@bullethound138 Oh god, Hetfield's the fucking man, no doubt...but his settings are about as terrible as they get. He seriously needs to hire a new guitar tech.
This is a great concept. I really dig the going over of the amp characteristics & layouts on the controls and features of each feature from front to back. The plugging in reveals again the sonic character and flexibility of each - however, I can't help but wonder how the gain levels and eq was determined as a 'flat norm' for each amp. I feel many of the demos don't always show the amp in their best element or shining potential, but does give the basis of character & tonal tuning of each amp.
These are all great amps, and they deserve the popularity they have. I have an axe fx 2 and its great but if I had the choice to work with real amps in a good studio with a good engineer that is the way I would go. It a shame though that the sound on this video really doesnt do any justice to the amps.
I think all these big names don't know the first thing about distortion, they're clearly just adding levels of fuzz with no frequency range or difference in eq, just straight up fuzz!! What the hell! There's hardly any definition, if it wasn't for these pros playing so cleanly an average player would buy one of these and sound like shit!! What crap.
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Dunno whether you're serious. Remember that our entire concept of what an electric guitar should sound like is based on over-driving tube amplifiers. The AxeFX (which I assume you're referring to) would be nothing without a sound to model on.
I like how valve amps have their own personality, not just a processed algorithm. The general consensus in the guitar world is that players prefer a big box full of burning hot, angry tubes. I certainly do.
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Youre a fucking idiot..... Ever wonder where the almighty *COUGH* axe-fx got sounds to model? Bulb uses pre-amps and digital modeling live cause its convenient. Ive seen one guitarist use that stuff in the studio, and it was because he couldnt crank his fucking 150 watt mesa triple rec because he was recording in his apartment.....
All these amps suck dick, for real, manufacturers just sell a name!!! It's not even funny, Bulbs live sound sounds waaaaay better and they're not even using tube amps!! Show's where the industry has been heading the last 15 years, at least we can rely on high priced pre amps and such.
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose lol? What? You are clearly not a owner of a good tube amp, or interface. Do you think sound modelling went past amps? A Axe fx does a better job, than anything else out there digitally. It is a easy solution, and a good one. But it is not 100% up there yet with the high end quality amps. Why do you think its called modeling? .....
Love this amp. I want one so bad. You can even switch channels via MIDI. Pretty badass. Also, for those of you who think this amp sounds like all the others - it's got a natural dark-mid range that's accentuated. Also, these amps have a big "bump" in the bottom end.
Tool, Three Days Grace, Smashing Pumpkins, Alkaline Trio, all use this exact model. Very versatile.
I like this series, but why in the hell do you guys allow him to put a $100 Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal in front of a $4,500 high-gain TUBE amp? Seriously, if you can't get a better tone than that POS pedal with the front panel of that Diezl, hang up your pick.
It's like putting ketchup on a steak. Don't do it.
@DonMegaphone Adding a tubescreamer/booster to the front end, boosts the input signal going into the amp to drive the preamp harder so you can roll back on the preamp gain and doesn't break up as much. It has a very specific application, totally external to the amp itself. It's like saying an amp is shit because it doesn't have a delay built into it.
@DonMegaphone Because regardless of dollar signs, signal chain characteristics are just that. You can't get that kind of an articulate tone without a boost. Get off your high horse.
@DonMegaphone i disagree. the screamer gives it more growl. it's not a pos pedal if used the right way. just like any other piece of gear. and i like ketchup with my steak.
@antonio610 lol yes and i don't wear shoes and i've got 20 deer mounts on my kitchen wall. i don't own a computer or have internet. my sister is actually my mom. you should see my pet opossum Larry the Cable Opossum. my truck is my best friend. i play the devils djent on a banjo. my mullet actually helps me pick up my cousins who have almost all their teeth. my mansion is two welded trailers. my church clothes are a pair of faded glory jeans and a sleeveless flannel shirt.
@DonMegaphone It's like auto-tune for top 40 vocals. It's the trend right now... In 2 or 3 years you'll hear of a new technique that allows you to get an in demand tone. Probably software. I'm not slamming the people that dig it, but that's exactly what it is. Besides, people have been using tube screamers for decades for one advantage or another.
@DonMegaphone Wrong. The TubeScreamer is one of the best and most popular overdrive pedals available. It isn't always about price. Just because something is expensive does not mean it is good, or super great. Also, Diezel is not in as high a demand as Ibanez. They are also a different product class. So what the fuck should he have put in front?
The same thing as Vai, Vaughn, Anastasio, Slipknot, etc. put in fron of their $1000+ amps? Oh, yeah. That IS a Tube Screamer.
If you play a different guitar through the same amp it's going to sound different. That's why so many people disagree and also why there are so many different amps on the market. Sorry to state the obvious but arguing about how an amp sounds is pointless. You try it with your guitar (and your fingers/pick/style), but nobody can tell you what sounds good.
Sounds nice but for the price, I'll take anything else. Hell, a used Framus Cobra goes for about $1100 to $1400 (which is funny because they're $5000 new. . . .)
@deathcore1239 Guess it depends what you're after in an amp. All amps have their own sound. VH4 is more versatile & better made I think. There's a bucketload of switching options with the VH4.
For players with a tight budget looking for a high gain amp with some quality to it's tone, I point them towards the Peavey 6505. The 6505 sounds much better than it costs.
VH4 cost me a fortune, but I can't see myself trading it for anything else now.
There is no larger difference between 6L6, KT66 and 5881 than there is between 6L6's of different companies. Why does he always talk about them like there all this difference?
@brandonmarks13279 theyre really rare but if u want a bernie rico just get a bc rich, uts from the same owner and way cheaper, bernie rico cost around 4000 dollars.
Also I would have liked to have seen an Uberschall, and a Rivera Knucklehead or KR7. I have an Uber Rev 2, but I would have liked to have heard it on here to gauge what I am hearing with the others.
Oh well its still the fairest comparison I've found to date!
Anyone seen any other cool amp rundowns? Even audio links! I can't get enough of this stuff -almost missed a studio gig, trying to pull away from this last night! LOL
This series of demos is great!, while the sound quality is always gonna be shyte, if you compare the videos with that in mind, you are still able to get a solid idea of the personalities on each amp by contrast.
I wouldn't be too hard on the players, they aren't there to illustrate their' personal styles, they are probably being asked to play certain types of things to show the amps characteristics, in different positions...for every amp...for many hours ...in a room in front of a camera.
Don't really understand how anyone can bash this amp. Especially comparing it to a Marshall, when Peter Diezel's business began modifying Marshalls. Don't judge this amp on this video. There is an enormous spectrum of tone to be had from this amp. Try different guitars with different pickups, different Pre/Power tubes, ancillary equipment, cabinets. I looked around for months before settling on this baby & have never considered trading her in. It's an incredible amp, make no mistake.
@sleazychestnut Hi I'm sleazychestnut from my mom's basement, and I'm not talented nor am I popular enough to be chosen to play a D chord on these amps.
@Chandlorexia I'm sure that Ty will want to thank you personally for coming to his rescue. "Mom' s basement"...only something a kid would say lol. How ironic.
@13uddha1993 so you say until you can afford to try and trade high end amps. they all have their sickness. gotta find what speaks to you. after 20 years of marshalls, fenders and boogies.. then learning how to mod my own marshalls and spending a few more years doing that.. I got into the matchless, bogner, diezel zone.. i almost bought an ecstacy for the versatility but the shiva speaks to me like no amp i've ever had.. l have an el34 head & the 6l6 combo. both sickness. they destroy my markV

@13uddha1993 No. You are absolutely right. You can get the equivalent sound quality with a 6505/5105 or a Fireball (neither of which are cheap imports). Diezels are just for rich bastards.
A Marshall sounds better than any of these amps combined. When will these tech head idiots ever learn. A Marshall and a Les Paul or Strat. No effects, no bullshit, NO BOUTIQUE NONSENSE. First thing these guy need to do is LEARN HOW TO PLAY. I'll take Peter Frampton's tone in Humble Pie from 1971, or Angus Young any day of the week. Those players know how to work the fretboard and pull the tone out of there souls and they don't need ridicules overpriced amps to do it. Damn, a 1968 Plexi will do.
While I am not a Periphery fan, I wouldn't be so quick to judge Misha Mansoor as he is a very creative player as he utilizes unusual riffs/techniques. While he isn't the best guitarist who has ever lived, you shouldn't just judge someone because you don't like the musical direction(doesn't apply to Justin Bieber).
While I agree Diezels suck, I'd take a Mesa Mark V any day over a Marshall and heck, I'm playing through a Marshall atm.
Tone is an opinion, but don't bash everyone who disagrees.
@racer500gp Man you must have just learned to use the internet yesterday I'm guessing? you must be at least 50.. I suggest you stick to vids of your own outdated music pops.

I feel many of the demos don't always show the amp in their best element or shining potential, but does give the basis of character & tonal tuning of each amp.
charvelguy 1 month ago
These are all great amps, and they deserve the popularity they have. I have an axe fx 2 and its great but if I had the choice to work with real amps in a good studio with a good engineer that is the way I would go. It a shame though that the sound on this video really doesnt do any justice to the amps.
VRTXofficial3 2 months ago 2
I think all these big names don't know the first thing about distortion, they're clearly just adding levels of fuzz with no frequency range or difference in eq, just straight up fuzz!! What the hell! There's hardly any definition, if it wasn't for these pros playing so cleanly an average player would buy one of these and sound like shit!! What crap.

@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Someone woke up on the wrong side of the futon...
nickblum97 2 months ago
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Dunno whether you're serious. Remember that our entire concept of what an electric guitar should sound like is based on over-driving tube amplifiers. The AxeFX (which I assume you're referring to) would be nothing without a sound to model on.
I like how valve amps have their own personality, not just a processed algorithm. The general consensus in the guitar world is that players prefer a big box full of burning hot, angry tubes. I certainly do.
voiceofreason79 2 months ago
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Youre a fucking idiot..... Ever wonder where the almighty *COUGH* axe-fx got sounds to model? Bulb uses pre-amps and digital modeling live cause its convenient. Ive seen one guitarist use that stuff in the studio, and it was because he couldnt crank his fucking 150 watt mesa triple rec because he was recording in his apartment.....
TheSchafer78 2 months ago
All these amps suck dick, for real, manufacturers just sell a name!!! It's not even funny, Bulbs live sound sounds waaaaay better and they're not even using tube amps!! Show's where the industry has been heading the last 15 years, at least we can rely on high priced pre amps and such.
WeveGotNoTimeToLose 2 months ago
@WeveGotNoTimeToLose lol? What? You are clearly not a owner of a good tube amp, or interface. Do you think sound modelling went past amps? A Axe fx does a better job, than anything else out there digitally. It is a easy solution, and a good one. But it is not 100% up there yet with the high end quality amps. Why do you think its called modeling? .....
AnimalRepellent 1 month ago

DonMegaphone 2 months ago 4
@DonMegaphone In no way does the Tube screamer take or replace tone, it just drives the tubes harder and tightens up the sound.
DGBV69 2 months ago 2
@DonMegaphone It tightens up the low end for lower tunings and or metal... -facepalm-
austinfailz 2 months ago
@DonMegaphone Adding a tubescreamer/booster to the front end, boosts the input signal going into the amp to drive the preamp harder so you can roll back on the preamp gain and doesn't break up as much. It has a very specific application, totally external to the amp itself. It's like saying an amp is shit because it doesn't have a delay built into it.
voiceofreason79 2 months ago
@DonMegaphone Because regardless of dollar signs, signal chain characteristics are just that. You can't get that kind of an articulate tone without a boost. Get off your high horse.
Guitaristrr 1 month ago 4
@DonMegaphone i disagree. the screamer gives it more growl. it's not a pos pedal if used the right way. just like any other piece of gear. and i like ketchup with my steak.

Jacksonkellyfreak 1 week ago
@DonMegaphone It's like auto-tune for top 40 vocals. It's the trend right now... In 2 or 3 years you'll hear of a new technique that allows you to get an in demand tone. Probably software. I'm not slamming the people that dig it, but that's exactly what it is. Besides, people have been using tube screamers for decades for one advantage or another.
itowedin 1 month ago
@DonMegaphone Wrong. The TubeScreamer is one of the best and most popular overdrive pedals available. It isn't always about price. Just because something is expensive does not mean it is good, or super great. Also, Diezel is not in as high a demand as Ibanez. They are also a different product class. So what the fuck should he have put in front?
The same thing as Vai, Vaughn, Anastasio, Slipknot, etc. put in fron of their $1000+ amps? Oh, yeah. That IS a Tube Screamer.
Hang up YOUR pick.

Hell, a used Framus Cobra goes for about $1100 to $1400 (which is funny because they're $5000 new. . . .)
deathcore1239 2 months ago
@deathcore1239 Guess it depends what you're after in an amp. All amps have their own sound. VH4 is more versatile & better made I think. There's a bucketload of switching options with the VH4.
For players with a tight budget looking for a high gain amp with some quality to it's tone, I point them towards the Peavey 6505. The 6505 sounds much better than it costs.
VH4 cost me a fortune, but I can't see myself trading it for anything else now.

Tommy666666777777 3 months ago

Damn, a 1968 Plexi will do.
racer500gp 4 months ago
While I am not a Periphery fan, I wouldn't be so quick to judge Misha Mansoor as he is a very creative player as he utilizes unusual riffs/techniques. While he isn't the best guitarist who has ever lived, you shouldn't just judge someone because you don't like the musical direction(doesn't apply to Justin Bieber).
While I agree Diezels suck, I'd take a Mesa Mark V any day over a Marshall and heck, I'm playing through a Marshall atm.
