@roseandbench They gave Ken Burkharts wife a clit ring to wear but Ken Burkhart turned around and looked over his left shoulder and saw Elrod Hendricks and Bernie Carbo doing a "DP" on her and Burkhart dropped dead instantly from a cardiac arrest.
kateslateforever2 The Orioles organization has a rich past. Although I'm a Yankee fan, I for one would love to see your team compete each and every year. Hopefully Buck will continue his magic and bring respectability back to your organization. I know my brother would certainly love THAT! Best of luck. :)
I don't hate necessarily the Orioles (then or now)... in fact my brother's a die hard Orioles fan. But I gotta tell ya, back in 1969... The Mets earned their World Series victory over the Orioles by playing their hearts out. The Orioles came into the series arrogant and overconfident. In the end it cost them big! Sorry, Jim Palmer-I know you, Frank Robinson and the rest of your team members are still bitter about the outcome... but the fact remains, the Amazing Mets beat you guys!
I was a big Reds fan in 1970. At the very end of this clip, Palmer says "We think he tagged him out", referring to Elrod Hendricks and Bernie Carbo. You can watch the replays yourself, but it is very clear that not only did Hendricks not tag Carbo out, but the umpire was in no position to make the right call since his back was to the plate. (The umpire Ken Burkhart did not expect Carbo to race home from 3rd, so he jumped into fair territory to call the chopper off the bat of Ty Cline fair).
Its all acient history now. I wasn't even born until 1980. These old guys are just recalling the better times in Baltimore. I'm sure there was a rivalry back then between "O Town" and Cincinatte
@kateslateforever2 : I wouldn't classify it as a rivalry since the 1970 World Series weas the only time these two teams met. There was no interleague play back then. At any rate, these two franchises have really experienced some tough times lately, and probably wish things they could turn back the clock to the '70s.
@ddenuci I don't know when the interleague play started, but I can tell you this there was a rivalry between the Orioles and the Pirates. Then again Baltimore hates Pittsburg ten fold anyway. I think the Orioles lost two WS to the Pirates. Hard to believe, huh?
@kateslateforever2 interleague play started in 1997. When I think of Orioles/Reds, there are two things that come immediately to mind: 1) the 1970 World Series and 2) one of the most bone-headed trades of all time - Frank Robinson of the Reds traded for Milt Pappas and a few others prior to the 1966 season. Frank went on to win the Triple Crown in the AL !
Ah yes Frank Robinson. One of the best players to ever be an Oriole. His number is out in the garden outside the Yard with the other retired numbers (Eddie, Cal, Earl, Jim and Brooks)
@kateslateforever2 ---yea thats how its been for the past 20 yrs---the worst trade (one of the worst in history) is when the O's traded a future hall of famer (Curt Schilling), andexcellent player for many yrs (Steve Finley) and a pretty good pitcher (Pete Harnisch) for Glenn Davis, who totally flopped and was out of baseball in 2 yrs. But back in the old days---60s -80s, the orioles could get the better of most trades.
@ddenuci Milt Pappas was one of the most under rated right handers in baseball historyThe Orioles should have kept him and traded away Eddie Watt instead for Frank Robinson.
@fawkyou3 Pappas won 209 games. Overall record of 209-164, which is very good. But it sounded like you weren't satisfied getting Frank Robinson for Pappas. Baltimore made one of the greatest trades in history, and if they had to get rid of Pappas so be it. Remember, in a few years they would have a rotation of Palmer, Dobson, Cuellar and McNally. They didn't really need a 5th starter.
@kateslateforever2 --not one of the best----Frank was by far the best hitter the O's ever had. Cal may have had the longevity, but no one did what Frank did--on field and in clubhouse. He led by example
@ddenuci --the play was a comey of errors. Carbo nevertouched home plate. But remember---the ump was in Hendricks'way, since he had to make a fair or fould call on the chopper in play. Had it not been for that, Carbo would have been out by 10 ft
@loyaldude10 Here is what happened.... 1 out, Carbo on 3rd, Helms on 1st. Pinch-hitter Ty Cline bounces a high chopper in front of the plate. Home plate Ump Burkhart straddles the 3rd base foul line and signals the ball fair. Hendricks was ready to throw to 1st, but pitcher Palmer signalled for him to tag Carbo who was trying to score. Hendricks plowed into Burkhart as he whirled around to lunge for Carbo. Burkhart signalled out.
@ddenuci Anderson ran out of the dugout to protest the call. Replays showed Hendricks tagged Carbo with his glove, while holding the ball in his other (right) hand. He had grabbed Cline's chopper with his bare hand and never moved it to his glove. Carbo slid wide of the plate, and only touched it accidently when he returned to protest the out call. Still photos of the play show that Burkhart actually blocked Carbo's path to the plate. The score remained 3-3, and Orioles went on to win 4-3.
@ddenuci --u r correct. But the bottom line was----Carbo had no business trying to socre. If ump wasnt in catcher's way, he's out by 10 ft. It wouldnt hav mattered what position ump was in. Dont know how Hendricks tagged him w/ glove hand, but Carbo was and should have been out. Was a great game though.

And in a little over 2 seasons, Pappas was 30-29 with the Reds before they traded him away.

Well I know it sucks, but the Orioles got a lot of bad trades over the years too. That guy Albert Bell hurt the Orioles for years.
