This is by far the most compact vr-solution I've seen. Now that Vuzix has released it's Wrap 1200 with 1280x720 resolution this starts to make an awful lot of sense, especially when it's cheaper and more authentic than three monitors and the TrackIR. Would be too awesome. For FPS I would like to get an independent motion tracker for the gun also, but that's probably not possible, at least not with most of games. Does it strain eyes much or have you noticed any problems in your vision with it?
@xAgentVFX LOL because Sony and Microsoft aren't as awesome as me :P If I had the budget I would do it, make it sell it, then some 10 year old kid would be running around the house wearing it playing left 4 dead and get scared and run and fall down the stairs... On the point of wireless I was thinking about making a head-holster for like an Ipod touch, so you look at the ipod screen, and just do a remote session to a powerhouse gaming rig and use the accelerometers from the ipod to look around.
@extrememonaXXX lol thanks! build one up :) I bet you could come up with something cool new hardware has come out, and small screens are cheap nowadays, maybe a ipod touch / xbox kinect combo could be cool.
@florisaartsen you can use anything that has USB on a PC & some that dont (converters) something just need drivers before the PC will properly detect it
@desposyy I know huh, I am just a random guy who likes to play video games, really the idea isn't that difficult or impractical, imagine if a research team paid me a million dollars and gave me manufacturing ability the things that we could come up with, I would create high resolution wrapped glasses that have a processor built in and a good camera and do some augmented reality stuff where you run around the great outdoors shooting zombies or multi-player battling eachohter and cost $400
Actually the Move, Kinect, and Wii can be used in Virtual Reality very well.
Especially the Kinect, it can track your entire body and use it in a game.
Imagine using petemayo's setup combined with a Kinect, it would allow you to have 100% control of your character, meaning the gane could mimic every little movement you make. (Of course the game would have to be programmed to support this.)
There's a good example of this on YouTube, search for "HMD + Kinect Virtual Reality"
@SteffSoft Damn, cool find, is a good idea! Kinect seems cool I haven't played with one yet, I have done really big pain in the ass stuff with HMD and low light cameras + Augmented Reality, was cool effect but sloppy and a huge pain in the ass. I called it 'Third Person Self' where I walked around the house with glasses and a camera attached to the back of me, like I was remote controlling myself then put in some AR markers for fun, but PITA
I'm really tempted to try and make a VR game myself, but my VR920 is broken and Vuzix won't replace it because "it's out of warranty." :/
Btw, if you feel the VR920 headtracker isn't all that great, you might want to get a WiiMotionPlus accesory for your Wiimote and use GlovePIE to replace the VR920's yaw, pitch, and roll values with those of the WiiMotionPlus. (That way you can actually aim with the gun instead of your head. Also, MotionPlus has much better Yaw than the VR920)
@SteffSoft Yeps, I majorly hacked the VR920 the tracking was so lame and picky, I rewrote the way it calculates. My best luck is actually taking apart a Gyration Air Mouse :) Since games don't really use 'roll' it's hyper accurate and fast.
I was going for minimalism with this setup, this is version 4 of VR :) I wanted something to slip on and hold and play games portably, works pretty well :)
This can be awesome when used in game where you control your head and your arms/weapon separately, like ArmA: Armed Assault and the sequel ArmA II. Try those out, even the demo would suffice to see the results. Good job btw.
Very impressive, although the fact that your head aims and your guns pointing doesn't effect the aim would seem to ruin some of the experience. It seems that's a limitation of the game itself and not necessarily the VR system.
If you can find a way to have the guns position effect aiming I'm sure this would become a lot more enjoyable. Hell I'd want one in that case.
@AdabA Thanks! Yep, my thoughts exactly I was thinking of making a mod for halflife or something, I was thinking how awesome would it be to have two guns one in each hand and be able to move them all around regardless of head position, would make some for some awesome action, or at least running away and shooting behind your head :)
*bows* dude omfg, u will be the richest man alive some day. Name your price, ill buy a copy, once more are made!!!!!! Don't ever think about giving instructions online, you keep this and become a fuckin Bill Gates my friend. I always hoped id get to try out a badass VR game b4 i got too old, and now i can :') ty
Haha well u work at it man we can all see u got the potential, and btw Morrowind is the best game ever!!! Praise Bethesda :) I look forward to the copy, charge quite a bit more than what it cost to make it and ull get far :)
@benhez LOL yep! it actually makes half life 2 a very scary game, which I didn't remember being scary playing it standard. when you feel really enclosed
I really know how to drag it on, demo is not until 5 minutes 0_0
Sorry for the lack of enthusiasm / length of explaining I made the video from 12:30 to 1 AM as my family slept. I was originally going to have more demos, more action more theory and less explanation, but oh well my hobbies were starting to drown me.
That is way cool. I want one!

N10JA1 Laptop off ebay = $280
Vuzix VR920 off ebay = $200
Wiimote + Nunchuck + gun housing = $60
Blutooth dongle + extra audio adapter from frys = $30
Surface speakers from amazon = $20
Backpack from walmart = $10

The Vuzix is pretty wonky but I rewrote the way it works to ignore the jumping around, move your head slowly and you get good response.
