Yeah the 808 is a great piece of kit but it's expensive though thanks to demand. They were cheap back in the day when people began to really learn how to use them.
For you to say that it is "not practical to make records with" the 606 is nonsense.
I own an 808 and a 606 and I record with both of them.
Modern recording utilizes multi-tracking, with which you can overdub. If you absolutely feel the need to have each drum sound processed separately you can put each sound on it's own track and then mix it down later.
That is not, however, the ONLY way to do it, as has been demonstrated by the many professionals who have recorded with the 606.
MARANTZamp, the very definition of "value" is the price that someone is willing to pay for an item.
If you put a 303 on Ebay and someone pays $2k then it has a value of $2k, regardless of what you personally would pay for it.
Also, I understand the idea that multi outs can be a huge advatange in certain recording situations but to say that not having them makes an instrument "not practical" is belied by the many artists who have recorded with (and made money from) the 606.
both are tatally diferent, personally i like both, 606 very pure electronic sound, 707 are sample sounds suitable for house music wich is very nice sounding especially the hi-hats , SD and BD, you decide waht you need.
it´s not possible to say. they are 2 different nice drum machines with very different character. so it depends on what you are after?? I have both and I love them both deeply :)
TB-303. Originally a rock guitarist's thrown away piece of plastic junk, sold at a pawn shop in inner city Chicago for about $10, and so cheap that only poor Black DJs wanted to buy it, to create an innovate new early 80s dance music based on 70s funk & soul.. ;) By the 90s it gets totally commercialized outside America, and the price of that same thrown away plastic junk from the 80s is how much today?
The use of TB-303 as a House music bass machine was started by inner city DJ/producers in Chicago who found something cheap, and yes they were all Black, this is a fact... The 303 never lasted long in its original purpose as a regular bass for typical Pop music, although you can hear it in some old early 80s songs... The focus on machine only misses the whole point of music... "The Sound" needs people to discover it and make songs out of it... lets not forget who these people were ;)
to some degree may be, but the dx7 always was and always will be a giant turd. I was there in the 1980's when Dave smith started the whole midi protocol we all love so much today. Every 2nd hand shop was full of analogue gear, tb303's, moogs, arps etc as everyone went mad for the new digital sound.
i've had three DX7's so far but never will again, its easier to use the native instruments FM8 Vst version
Phase modulation synths would be the best thing to get hold of.
the Future retro has CV / Gate out + Sync Out TR-type cable, and the 606 has a Sync in and sync out so is very easy to sync bout in fact this demo i didnt use a computer or midi at all, just those two brothers there
OMG i want a tb303 and a tr606...! Pretty amazing that we`re in 2008 and still nothing new shit sounds cooler that the original 303 with an old analog drummachine..!
Luke Vibert si que sabe hacer acid :P pero mi preferido es sin ninguna duda Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) y el disco de Human Action Network (aka The Flashbulb, Benn Jordan) es excelente tambien!
Only, In my previous comment I was implying that the vid could be a bit confusing for someone who doesn't have certain degree of knowledge in grooveboxes/synths. I.e.: Someone who only wants to hear the TR-606 mistakenly also hears the Revo.
Though that same person can also look in the vid description (not everyone does). So basically I'm bitching my ass off here :P
What size is the output on these?

the 606 is kool, but having only ONE output keeps it out of the professional arena.
Gotta have at least 6 outs...
And the 303 is an overrated piece of plastic. People pay over 2K for something that has a value of $50.
Absurd!
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
I disagree.
So do many professionals who use the TR 606, such as Mr.Oizo, Nine Inch Nails, The Sneaker Pimps, Moby, and OMD, to name just a few.
I guess somone forgot to tell these professional musicians that this drum machine is "out of the professional arena.
"
FAIL!

without multi outs, it's not practical to make records with...sorry
the 808 is the way to go...10 outs!

I like the 606 better but I don't own a 707 to compare it with.
As previously stated, it depends on what you are doing. You could make some great sounds on either one (or both, for that matter!)

That's the way it always is. People get so hung up on having the latest and greatest equipment that they forget to focus on making music.
Then some poor slobs with loads of talent blow it up on all that old crappy gear and suddenly it's a must-have item!
Right now, FM synthesis is making a comeback. All those old, FM machines that became so cheap when ROMplers came out are becoming valuable again.
