the only problem with this ending is when it tells you how it ends. I think it would have been much better if David just walked away and no writing came up.
im currently working on a movie which should look like comic books. i prefer this movie for inspiration rather than frank miller's sin city or 300. Its my luck that this movie is airing frequently on TV and whenever i watch this scene and the part where he comes out of the swimming pool in front of the kids, i get chills all the way from my stomach to my neck.
Oh and maybe Mr.Glass could flick a button and then the wall of articles appears??? It seems weird that all Bruce Willis had to do was look to his right!
Ozzy from Watchmen wore purple too. He had a master plan that killed a lot of people for a "greater good" and purple is a color that means royalty. So yeah, purple has meaning.
I heard an idea that he was going to make it a trilogy, but when that wasn't going to happen decided to add the text at the end for closure. Pity. It was a cool idea.
really????? and if the character played by s jackson was white you would probably say why there aint no black actor on this movie...stop talking deep shit
everyone is forgetting that he didnt write the last airbender. every movie is a piece of shit if its written poorly. everything that hes written is amazing except the happening.
I always fellt bad for the guys mother. I mean just a moment ago she told Bruce about how proud she was of her son. Now she has to deal with the fact that he did all those horrible things. Truly tragic.
This movie would be just about perfect without the last two final cards.
As it is, it's still M. Night's best movie so far, the best 'comic book' film ever made and a transcendently devastating masterpiece. Part of me wants to see the two sequels the director planned happen, and another part of me doesn't. I don't think anyone can stand another Airbender-level fiasco.
Are you sure this guy went on to direct The Last Airbender? I mean this movie has so much emotion,it's nicely paced and knowledge of the material at hand.
The Last Airbender is fast-paced,threw all the research the cartoon had out the window, and has next to no emotion at all.
*snaps* That's it. After directing Signs, the real aliens hated the ending of an otherwise good film and kidnapped him and Mel Gibson and replaced them with clones. It explains a lot for both of them actually.
Shyamalan should have continued with this character, meeting other "villains" and discovering more about himself in other movies. It would have been better than all the shit he launched after this.
It seems as though M.Knights talent ended after sixth sense and this film, all the others are avergae or worse. He should have made the sequel to this film instead of awful films like lady in the water, the village and others.
Id love shyamalan to go back to these sort of movies instead of the rubbish he is churning out, unbreakable is his best movie and in my top 5 super hero movies, this is what a superman film would be like if Nolan directed it lol
I realy like this movie but the text at the end is realy sad. Its pathetic the way it has to say that mr glass was caught etc. Its realy impressive how much a little bit of text like that ruins the whole film. I have to stop the movie before it appears
@geobruf123 I don't see why that would be such a problem. Plenty of villains have escaped from mental institutions since the beginnings of the super hero genre - why believe that Mr. Glass couldn't have gotten out?
@OusanYmon its a problem because they put it there to please people who think the bad guys always get caught. Its a terrible thing to do in this scene because the whole impact of it is spoiled. why cant willis just walk away in sadness and we are left to think about the meaning of the film, rather than a dumbing down tack on like that? Its actually my worst film ending of all time. what a sell out
Now that we know who you are... I know who I am. I'm not a mistake! It all makes sense. In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain's going to be? He's the exact opposite of the hero, and most time's they're friends, like you and me. I should've known way back when. You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr. Glass.
@BleachDeath13 Revenge, Insanity. Emotional Torment. Unknown of what his place is in the world. He spent his whole life around comic books and being isolated, he was obsessed with finding an equal, The Mr Glass comment only fuels his obsession and no pun intended, he cross over to the dark side.
I consider his film The Village to be one of his unsung triumphs even though his latter films could be considered trash they all provide a piece of mind so to speak and to add fuel to the fire The Last Airbender was okay since people expected so little from so much hype that we got what we deserved, he is a creative and talented writer/director.
Actually SIGNS would be m. Night last great epic tale, after that his films went downhill. Unbreakable however remains to be a M. Night classic! Shit I can watch this ending over and over and it still gives me chills!
It's a film that needed a sequel, and still does. BUT, after a stream of crap that M. Night Shyamalan has made ever since, would you trust him not to ruin it?
Could they not have shown 'David Dunn leading authorities to Limited Edition where evidence of three acts of terrorism was found'? Or that 'Elijah Price is now in an institution for the criminally insane'? It would only have been another two minutes of film. I've always felt that that was so lazy.
Too bad all of his movies sucked after this one. This movie showed some great promise to a young directors career. After a blockbuster hit like the 6th Sense, he comes out with a movie that is all about story, character development and just everything that great cinema is about. Why couldn't have continued on this path?
A breathtaking ending, and a beautifully realized performance from Mr.Jackson.
This has been, and will always be one of my most treasured movies, and this ending is right up there with my favorites as well. The realization of the human dream, the dream we all share, of finding our purpose in life, twisted by a mind as shattered as the body that housed it, Jackson is immortalized by this moment.
@seraphiccandy21 Well, I don't know...I used to think all revamps couldn't be better than the original- but then True Grit came out...Plus I think most sequels suck because they were not set-up by the original- they were marketing afterthoughts. This one looks like it deliberatly setup another film. So...anyways that's my two cents.
the acting from samuel l jackson was so good i never saw this ending coming, and the scary thing was if bruce willis' character didn't exist then he would of killed all those people for nothing.

A pretty "meh" movie in my opinion. But the ending is what always gets me, especially coming from one of my favorite actors of all time. The trademark twist of M. Night.
i am here very high and i am watching this ending and it is just such a fucking classic, like, so shocking, so sad at the same time.....just a masterpiece...
U know what the scarriest thing is ? To not know your place in this world, to not know why u're here.....It's just an awful feeling.
This was the line that made me shed a tears and once again question the importance of my existence as a human being on this planet alongside almost all my other 7 billion sibblings. Sometimes I think it's a lot easier just not to be born at all....sad, maybe pathetic or weak, I don't really care....
Greatest super-hero movie ever made. One of the best movies ever. This is a modern classic. No CGI, no capes, no radioactive spiders/gamma explosions, no aliens from a dead planet, no gods, no rings, no super-soldier serum, no billionaire. Just a story about a guy who has no idea who he is, what he can do, and why he is special. A truly brilliant idea: A super-hero that has no idea that he has powers.
@cainusrising From what I can remember one of the concept ideas put forward for this film (as a kind of summary) was actually "What if Superman didn't know he was Superman?"
@cainusrising And yet when this movie came out a lot of people, include M Night's fans, lambasted it. I kind of like M. Night's films. I will admit some are self-serving, esp when M. Night casted himself as the prophetic writer in LITW, but overall most of his films take urban legend stories and give it a contemporary look and feel. The interesting thing about Unbreakable is here is a movie that got it all right before Heroes was even a thought. I'd like to see a planned Unbreakable trilogy.
Today, for the first time ever, someone suggested to me that the ending proved David was not a superhero. Did anyone get that? I figured the whole touching people and seeing their past would be enough, even if we didn't consider his immense strength and inability to be injured. Another question: do any of you think David dropped the whole superhero business after Elijah revealed his true character? Yes, the same person suggested that to me as well. I are confussed!
Interesting theory. I guess one way the ending could undermine David's being a modern-day superhero is by suggesting that Elijah had influenced his thinking to such a degree that David was engaging in a self-fulfilling prophecy.
@writersblock26 Yeah, but dodging the touch = see past makes me think the person I talked to was stretching for normalcy. I'll agree that it's an interesting theory, however.
never seen tis movie, but im interested about something. is this man immortal? and what powers did he have? i have not a lcu about this movie other then a trailer. but people are saying this is a excellent superhero movie? why>?
Brilliant film, Shyamalan's best work imo. I'll continue to defend this film until the day I die. Unbreakable goes beyond the comic book fluff that so many superhero movies get hung up on, it's an insightful character study of broken people and the many shades of gray that surround our lives. A real thought provoking hero movie, blessed by serendipity. "They called me Mr. Glass..."
I first saw this in the theater when I was 17. I left thinking this whole movie is a total jab towards comic book fans/readers (which I am). It was like it was saying, "comic book readers think that stuff is real and are all crazy". Now having an adult perspective while still being a comic book reader, I think it was a good movie.
Such an amazing, underrated movie. Definitely in my Top Ten movies of all time. I LOVED how M Night made a superhero movie feel plausible and realistic, with a REALLY clever twist. His newer movies may suck, but The Sixth Sense through The Village are all amazing films in my mind. This movie was his best one hands down though in my opinion, juuuuuust above the Sixth Sense.
institute for the criminally insane ?? they knew exactly what they were doing at the time it's just that WHAT they did was so horrible without any remorse ,that it's called insane to us ' normal " people !
There are lots of movies now that try and show what superheroes would be like in the real world, but none of them really succeed in that except for this movie.
@Gonowo Agreed, and the way that he says is basically saying, "I may have been born to be the embodiment of evil, but at least now I know was born for a reason."
the only problem with this ending is when it tells you how it ends. I think it would have been much better if David just walked away and no writing came up.

I figured the whole touching people and seeing their past would be enough, even if we didn't consider his immense strength and inability to be injured. Another question: do any of you think David dropped the whole superhero business after Elijah revealed his true character? Yes, the same person suggested that to me as well. I are confussed!
KnightOneDark 9 months ago
Interesting theory. I guess one way the ending could undermine David's being a modern-day superhero is by suggesting that Elijah had influenced his thinking to such a degree that David was engaging in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

@writersblock26 Yeah, but dodging the touch = see past makes me think the person I talked to was stretching for normalcy. I'll agree that it's an interesting theory, however.

This proves that not all superhero movies need to have massive amounts of cgi, and guys in silly costumes punching eachother.

Glass..."

@EcologicalFighter Well said. Absolutely brilliant in every way.

@dorfyrocks What is ridiculous about that line exactly?
froggerchanovsky 9 months ago
@froggerchanovsky Yes, I would like to know also. I could only see an IQ deficiency as being the explanation to him finding humor in that.

I wonder how many people were trying to figure out if Bruce Willis was dead because this came out right after the Sixth Sense

@FranFFXII They probably put him in the nuthouse because he told them all this supervillain business.
Leatherbubba 10 months ago
There are lots of movies now that try and show what superheroes would be like in the real world, but none of them really succeed in that except for this movie.

@Gonowo Agreed, and the way that he says is basically saying, "I may have been born to be the embodiment of evil, but at least now I know was born for a reason."

So Mr. Glass's superpower is finding and training superheros? I gotta admit that's pretty unique and Anti-Villain, the best kind of villain.
