Nixon used conservative rhetoric but many of policies are considered liberal.
Eisenhower practiced what he called a Dynamic Conservatism which continued all the major New Deal programs still in operation, including Social Security. Than there was of course Bill Clinton the Great Triangulator.
But as for Bush, I'm not sure if there is label that quite fits him. But the images of Rumsfeld,Brown, and Brenner make me consider the incompetant label.

talk shows are hardly "enlightened conversation." talk shows exist to sell products in between segments. the actual segments don't really allow for much enlightened discourse, as the host does most of the talking. the listener rarely gets to ask questions.

That's not what "conservative" means at all. In the political world, the word conservative implies a strict, more literal interpretation of the Constitution, liberal implies a liberal (or looser) interpretation of the Constitution.
You can be a conservative and still be an open minded, well rounded, and worldly person.
Bush is NOT a conservative. Politically, he is actually closer to a liberal or a socialist. Ron Paul however is a TRUE conservative / libertarian.

However, that is why it is important to read ALL the writings of that period. The Revolutionary Era provides MANY articles, pamphlets and speeches, not just the Constitution. For example, in the 1788 Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution, George Mason said:
"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials." So the 2nd Amend. becomes more clear with that statement.
