  • I don't care if this has to do with religion. Some of the most powerful and beautiful songs have to do with religious aspects, much like this one. This song is stunning.

  • thats kinda interesting too because 'baba' is 'dad' in greek

  • Strange that this song provokes such strong reactions from the atehist side. Not beleving in God as such does not mean that you cannot enjoy songs that feauture it? Religion is something more or less engrained in mankind (otherwise the trait would not have survived evolution). All the crimes committed in its name nonwithstanding, I believe that what you can take out of this song is the sense of awe man feels at the world. No need to be frightend about something religious.

  • @greceanu

As Christopher Hitchens put it so well, "religion poisons everything." Science flies people to the Moon, religion flies people into buildings. Atheists aren't afraid of God because only small children and religious people are frightened by imaginary beings. We are afraid of the EVIL that religion does. Catholic priests raping children, Muslims killing people for "insulting Mohammed," Mormons working to keep gays from marrying. You know, the evil you goddists love to do

  • @Ambidexter143 I would quite disagree. People that want to be violent will be even if secular. Football (soccer) riots in Europe are also no proof of football being despicable. The believe in something higher than the self is a very basic trait of mankind. I won't disagree that some religious people commit violent acts, but one has to be realistic. Much of the reasoning done by ardent atheists reminds me a bit of the Inquisition. Tolernace is not to tolerate the things we love, but what we hate.

  • @greceanu

Did I say that ONLY religion caused evil? Next time, respond to what I say, not to something else. I don't believe in "something higher than the self" because there's no evidence for your imaginary god. Just because you're afraid of death doesn't mean everyone is. Apparently reality is too frightening for you to face without your imaginary god to tell you everything will be all right if you worship him.

  • @Ambidexter143 By the way.. you goddist is really quite offensive. You know nothing of my believes, so I would entreat you to show some respect for the person you are discussing with. It would make any any argument you make a bit more convincing. Tolerance is not just there for you, but also for others.

  • @greceanu

Would you respect an adult who still believes in Santa Claus? Your belief in an imaginary god is just the same and deserves exactly the same respect. I tolerate your delusions, I don't respect them. You have the right to believe anything you want. I have the right to say you're deluded.

  • As an atheist myself, I enjoy this song the same way I enjoy the song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." I don't think there's any reason to let the religious content ruin anything for you.

Interestingly, "baba" is also "Father" in Chinese.

  • Ugh WHY did this song have to involve religion. I love the actual song, but the religious portrayal kills me. Fuck religion.

  • GOD is!

  • I belong to no religion, yet this song is amazing and beautiful, and I absolutely love it. Can't stop listening!

  • I used this theme music for my wedding.

  • @wildboy789789

The Lord's Prayer is a Christian prayer. I am not a theologian, but while the translation may not be technically accurate, the mention of Jesus as God only reflects a widespread belief among Christianity, at least to the extent that most, if not all Christian denominations, recognize the divine nature of Jesus while some of them, like the Roman Catholic Church, consider that Jesus is God and that the Holy Trinity, God, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Ghost are but one person.

  • how does 3 words (baba yetu yetu uliye) translate into 5 words (our father, jesus who art)?... and jesus is a name, which means even in there african language they would call him jesus, not "yetu" or "baba" lol... its a song about god, why must christians always lie?

  • @wildboy789789 not trying to offend u, but this 2 sentence post reveals a lot of ignorance if not many misconceptions about other languages/religions/cultures.

First, sometimes other languages are a lot simpler than english; they dont need a buncha random articles that english has (the, that, to, etc.). Like Chinese for example, it is a far simpler language yet it works for over 3 billion ppl. Thus, baba (father) and the rest of the phrase can easily translate.

  • @wildboy789789 2. Jesus is the english version of the original hebrew name, Yeshua. God is the english version of Hebrew Yahweh. So it's really obvious how other languages can translate names to their culture. I mean, they are still referring to a person, they just have a different name for them; does it really make a difference in the end? And "christians always lie" is just ignorant in general. Maybe think about the flaws in ur logic first before accusing and insulting billions of people.

  • @JamminJamacan well god is the biggest lie ._.

  • @wildboy789789 ok not gonna get into a religious debate with a stranger: Just know1. u dont just say outright that god is a lie, thats just being kind of a dick insulting religions everywhere and people's beliefs. U could say that "I'm an atheist" implying it instead rather than saying something so definitive. 2. No one can prove that god does or does not exist so let ppl have their 50/50 beliefs. After all, u cant prove god exists because the laws of logic wouldnt apply to a god if he existed.

  • @wildboy789789 u cant prove a god doesnt exist*

  • @JamminJamacan and u cant proove unicorns dont exist

  • @wildboy789789 no, im saying that even if there was a way to disprove god, it wouldnt work; God can be illogical yet still exist because he is a god and can bend the laws of logic. Plus unicorns do exist and they're fucking awesome.

  • Just look how beautiful God made everything...

  • ya i was playing civ 4 and this song was there boom and i looked it up and here i am

  • dude this song is bomb i only play civ 4 for dis song n well 2 learn ::D

  • For a more literal translation, try this link: mwanasimba.online.fr/E_songs_baba_yetu.htm

  • The actual displayed lyrics could use a bit of work as there are a few places where the wrong words were used, and the translation was pretty good although the word "Jesus" never appears in the Swahili version and the word "amen" was added in the displayed lyrics where it did not exist in the song. Overall, it was okay but needs linguistic improvement. The overall idea was presented acceptably to people who do not actually speak Swahili. Video imagery was pretty good.

  • loved this when i was playing civ 4 myself and still love it, and its good to know what it all means thanks

  • goosebumps everywhere!

love the music, it sounds so pure..

  • FFFF CHURCH Y U NO TEACH ME THIS VERSION!?!?

  • I didn't know that this song is 'The Lord's Prayer'.

I'm an atheist but I really like this song.

  • Beautiful hymm, i agree, it should be the world anthem unfortunately the meaning of the song doesn't fit the tune of humanity, we are a rational, beautiful, young race trying to find our place in the cosmos, we have our failings but we have our hopes and dreams. we need a song to represent that.

  • I'm a pretty strong atheist and all that, but I still enjoy good music. Love this song.

  • This allmost turned me into a christian... ALLMOST!

  • @videocritic2463 you mispelled almost :p

  • Yea baba yetu means "Our Father" which is the Lord's prayer in swahili. Get over it. Just because you're a heathen doesn't mean a song with religious lyrics can't be beautiful.

  • We'll be praying for you EdTheBadass.....

  • Some of it

  • No me jodais ke es un a puta kancion kristiana... kon lo way kestá.

  • you hear that? it's on every single one of us. one of humanities first languages, is't in everyone of us that's why we all love this song. we must unite as one or we will destroy ourselves!

  • @evilplayer498 How ironic.

  • Comment removed

  • We have to sing this in choir! i am a sopraino!!! My first year (im in 9th grade girls choir.) But we are singing it with the ENTIRE choir. Its gonna be so fun

  • lol @ butthurt atheists posting on this song.

If one cannot enjoy the song and leaving your religious prejudices in your comments then that shows they're not much better than christians going butthurt over atheists, seriously. The Lord's Prayer itself in its content cannot be an unethical matter when it tells about forgiveness and a new world to come, a new world as a new world era which evidently is about to come in the coming century. Even as atheist, there's no need to villainize religion.

  • Something bothers me about the atheists who take such offense at people who have differing views from theirs. Why?

Most religions are peaceful and insist that their followers love their fellow man. Some even make dreadful consequences for not doing such.

Fictional it may be, but it gives purpose to an otherwise futile existance and provides joy and peace. Some extremists may be anything but joyful, but they are branded as fools by the Real McCoys.

So please, be kind to believers.

  • One thing I don`t like about Civ IV - Beyond the sword is that I can`t listen to this song when I start up the game (аnd that takes pretty long at my pc:-D)

  • @Trhnetesiuz You can chance the menu to original in the expansion packs.

  • I love that in other songs there are discussions about Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga, but here there are talks about the meaning of human nature and philosophy. Keep it up guys! Prove there can be intelligent conversation on youtube!

  • how did oooooooooooooh get translated into la-la-la?

  • Love it

  • Beautiful song, but the lyrics kind of spoiled it for me, seeing as I'm an atheist ^^

  • @HepheistoBD Me too, at first, but then again it doesn't really matter. It's still a good song, regardless of the lyrics.

  • @HepheistoBD Same here at first, but then again its still a good song regardless of the lyrics.

  • This is one mean song with a wonderful compilation of instrumental. good thing these people did not know what you are saying in front of their face because then war would get worse! the religious and musical war looks like it will never cease! it so sad...

  • EPIC!!!

  • this should be the workld anthem

  • @ChuWanggAmes true. Better than the 5 notes in the Viking I.

  • @ChuWanggAmes It's cool, the problem is that it has a strong religious message in it.

  • Yeah imemorized this!!

  • @ThinkingforMyself I am Christian. I know the teachings, and the fact that we are saved by faith and not works, that we cannot save ourselves, contradicts with the beliefs of Buddhism. There is no way for one to believe wholly in both. Christianity teaches explicitly that it is not by works. Contradiction with Buddhism. End of debate.

  • Why is everyone making this a religion battle? I'm an athiest but I still enjoy the song , the reference to god is part of it's atmosphere.

  • @ThatKidWithTheVideos well said m8! Are u a culturemonger like me?? :D

  • @brudin I guess , a little bit

  • @ThatKidWithTheVideos Exactly, I am an atheist too and I love this song it deserved the award it got

  • @combatdstar:

Same with me, and I agree completely :D

  • piękna nuta ^^ nic dodać nic ująć :)

  • When I hear this, I imagine a video starting with some human tribe making tools and hunting animals. Then a bronze age city with temples, after that some Greek cities, then Middle-Age buildings with an heretic being beheaded by the Church...

  • Ya same here its going to be an awesome song

  • @phussla You wouldn't happen to be from Cowley County Community College, would you? ;)

  • We're doing this as part of this year's concert choir. It's so beautiful and powerful when you hear it done live that I can't help but sing it with a smile. I'm a Baritone, so my part is rather simple. This means I can bask in the music rather than having to concentrate hard on my part.

It's going to be the concert opener, and I think we're going to start with the tenor on stage in the beginning, and then the singers will just 'appear' in the audience, walking slowly up to the stage.

  • Jesus is the LOrd

  • This song embodies the dream of all Civ players... "On Earth as it is in Heaven" ;)

  • Bible quotes? The Lord's Prayer? Yeah.

  • I would sometimes turn on Civ IV and leave it on the main menu, just to listen to this song :)

  • @AcierInfernal Congrats for making this Masterpiece of Music.... Your video must be the ONLY video on Youtube to have HQ sound... God Bless You

  • This song is beautiful and inspirational, now I know the lyrics are just religious crap, just a pretty spiel of worship. I'll forget the lyrics and enjoy the movement and power of the sound, and Not the ridiculous sentiment of worshipping fiction.

  • @Swinship

Don't you think that's a little rude? It's not like that the answer is that obvious.

You have your reasons, we have ours. Your reasons are good, our reasons are good, too. Believe me, I watch/read to "atheist material" more than the Bible itself.

  • @deathleader

I think this song embodies a lot of human spirit, and the fundamental need to depend on someone else. The lyrics suggest a God but the music can be taken in several ways.

I believe that we are so often told that independence is highly desirable, yet without others we could never prosper. Maybe you were crying because you felt this, and longed for cooperation.

  • Civ 5 has nothing nearly as good as this song =(

  • we are singing this in my choir!!!!!!!

    :D

  • The whole entire song is just the lord's prayer lol

  • I'm so pumped, the choir I'm a part of is singing this and I just can't stop listening to it!

  • I'm gonna be wining this song when Obama loses on November 6th 2012!

  • 0:17

THERE'S A GAME CALLED CIVILIZATION WHERE YOU GET YOUR OWN LITTLE NATION

BE IMMORTAL, RULE AS YOU SEE FIT, JUST ONE CLICK AND YOU CAN DECREE SHIT

FROM CIV 1 TO CIV REVOLUTION, IT'S YOUR JOB TO FIND THE SOLUTION

NEED ADVICE FROM SOMEBODY WISER? JUST ASK ELVIS, HE'S YOUR ADVISOR

  • My wife and I used this as the recessional at our wedding, most people thought it was just a really beautiful song. My gamer friends though it was just a nod to civ4, they were both right.

  • With Jewish roots, spread through Europe, from there all over the world, and now sung beautifully in Swahili, Baba Yetu really is the perfect theme for civ :)

  • @animaster9 There is no need to read what you say if you can't even comprehend a basic follow-on conclusion. If something so simple eludes you then I doubt you'd offer a complex rebuttal.

  • @hYpNoXiDe well then if you now refuse to read my responses then I suppose our business is concluded. goodbye sir and God bless you.

  • what language is the song in?

  • @MrAjJonesss

It's Swahili, language of Kenya, Tanzania and much of south-eastern Africa.

  • iv never been more determined to learn a sing in a different language! i need to be able to sing this incredible song!!!

  • ....montazume is a bitch in this game

  • Fuck Ghandi.

  • HA. I never knew this song was a Christian one. I still like it, even though I'm atheist. 'Tis quite epic.

  • What a beautiful language, one of the most beautiful languages I've ever heard.

  • This song is bloody AWESOME.

  • I listen to this song as I bomb and devastate the Incan Empire ahh what a great game.

  • that's why i don't mention religion to ANYBODY except my own religion. xD i love this song, but why a relgion debate over the song? stop arguing and enjoy the music!

  • Civ 4 had a very strong religion gameplay element so this song suits it.

  • A religion flamewar because of a soundtrack of a game...

    ಠ_ಠ

  • its nice to see the religious debate finally ended then :D

  • it was better without translation :P

  • i like this song so much, but this text is way to fixated on one religion in my opinion (and this in a game oO)

  • @knuddelwooly I agree. This is just my opinion, but wherever these lyrics came from, they are a little bias on the religion, because this supposed to be a game with all different religions in it, so i wouldn't understand why the creator would create the main song with just one religion.

  • fuck why do good songs get wasted on religion!

  • This is better than music nowadays. I never thought they could turn the Our Father prayer into a song, but nothings impossible.

  • In the official music video they show the founding of the united states when the song reaches the part about "thy kingdom come, and thy will be done". Dont you just love how subtle americans are sometimes?

  • This song is amazing! I can't help but attempt to sing along! Lol!!!!

  • When I open the game I always listen to all the song.

  • Beautiful song...things like this are things that keeps my love for humanity. Why we are killing us when we can create such master pieces...honestly everytime I hear this song I chant it in my house and cry at the same time. I'm not christian, Im Buddhist but. I chant it as a Symbol that everyone of us is equal to God's eyes and that there is no need to fight wars. Long live humanity, and may those religious differences can be forgotten for good :) may EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU HAVE GOOD FORTUNE

  • @ChileanHardstyles I am Buddhist as well and this song outright fills me with such joy at its beauty that I cry every time I hear it.

Also, your words fill me with a similar joy.. :)

  • @ChileanHardstyles Isn't Buddhism an atheistic religion?

  • @crossfire316 I believe Buddhism is more of a philosophy, a way of life that respects all life. They do not see Buddha as a God but a teacher. You can be Buddhist and Christian or whatever at the same time. :)

  • @ThinkingforMyself That's not true. Buddhists follow teachings of Buddha on how to be released from the cycle of rebirthing to achieve salvation by works. Christianity follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Bible. They conflict because Christians believe that Jesus is the ONLY way to be saved, and we cannot save ourselves.

  • Agreed they do follow the teachings of Buddha however they do not view him as a God. It is not a religion in that respect, it is a philosophy of life through the teachings of Buddha. However just the same as a Christian gains salvation through Jesus, their belief in him alone does not grant them this salvation its also works just as in the teachings of Buddha. You can be a Christian and also follow the teachings of Buddha.

  • @ThinkingforMyself But as a Christian, your beliefs and actions should stem from scripture, not from buddhist teachings. If there is something in Buddhism that relates to the values of Christ, fine, but that doesn't make you a buddhist. Yah, I don't want to taint this song with random debate I just noticed the contradiction and thought I would say something. I think some research into the core teachings of buddhism would show you couldn't be both.

  • @crossfire316 everyone believes in things differently so you cannot exactly label them as this or that, they got their own tendency. My own belief has elements of many religions paired with a belief in nature and it'd be pointless to label myself as any of the existing religions. Pretty sure it's the same with most of people.

  • @ChileanHardstyles can't you see that war is the mother of invention and the mother of controlling the population of earth without war none would be alive don't you see that people must die because is the circle of life humans fight since they birth it's impossible to stop

  • @MrMasterblackbird dude I know what you are talking about but thats a pretty sad worldview. You have to at least believe that it will someday be possible for humanity to solve its problems without violence.

There are also other winning condition in Civ 4 besides Conquest :)

  • @HepheistoBD i agree but if man have ambition there will be always war

  • @HepheistoBD It sounds a little harsh, but he does have s bit of logic in there. Why did Europe advance so much quicker than the Americas and Australia? Because it was engulfed in war. The French crossbow and English longbow are both inventions of the hundred years war. Nuclear physics would not be where it is today without the need for a bomb in WW2. Even classical physics and trigonometry took large steps forward when someone said "I want to throw a big rock over this wall and hit that casle."

  • @name887 totally agree with those examples, I know wars have been crucial for human advance, but I hope we can progress to the point where we won't need that anymore.

  • @HepheistoBD I hope for that, too. I just find that a little unrealistic, sad though it is. The United Nations is a great step towards world peace, but it can only help so long. Back in the middle ages and before, war was caused by greed. Man gets power, man wants more power. Simple. Now it's more about defending one's own beliefs and status. The Jews weren't specifically trying to piss anyone off by returning to the middle east after WWII, they just happened to anger the Palestinians. (cont)

  • @HepheistoBD (cont) and the Palestinians weren't looking for a fight, but their ego was damaged by having their homeland taken away, and so conflict followed. The United States was drawn into a fight aftr the terrorist attack of '01. We felt the the world would soon be saying "Pfft, look at these guys. Their most well-defended building was hit by a group that doesn't even have a formal government, and they're going to do nothing about it." Our ego was hurt, so we were forced to retaliate. (cont)

  • @HepheistoBD (cont) (sorry for posting a novel) But it isn't just the governments and military, its the entire nation. Think about the way we mark history. By the wars, not the peace times in between. That's because on some level, people like to see something big go up in flames. Figuratively, but most probably literally, as well. When we were hit in '01, our nation went mad as one. We didn't care how it happened, we just wanted revenge. It wasn't until much later we realized our mistake. (done)

  • @HepheistoBD It's sad, I agree, but as long as there are uneducated people in the world and societies where violence and pillaging is seen as acceptable, then war will continue. It's an unfortunate consequence that in order to secure peace, more civilized nations must be prepared to defend themselves from less civilized ones.

One day, it will be possible to have complete peace, but not until those uncivilized nations reevaluate what is considered acceptable behavior.

  • @millenniumf1138 Yeah sure, Israel vs. the Pakistani People, US vs. Afghanistan. Oh the western world is so "educated" and "civilized". No society accepts violence and pillaging, but if you put it on a larger scale, nobody cares that the US is pillaging all over the place (world).

  • @HepheistoBD And what is the rest of Europe doing? As far as I can tell, they help the US in it's war efforts, especially Great Brittain and France.

But you seem stuck on criticizing the US when nobody thinks to criticize nations in the Middle East. What do you want us to do? Leave everyone alone, right? Okay.

Honestly though, what does it say about us from their point of view when we "turn the other cheek"?

  • Kwutombo wewe

  • I knew I liked this song for a reason. The lyrics are awesome!!

  • im atheist and i love this song

  • @frootofaloom It's not about religion, it's about humanity.

  • @frootofaloom same im a bit pissed about it being religious lol it got really cheesy

  • @TheWhiteOwl23 i find it best to forget the words have meaning and sing along lol

  • So basically it' s the Lord's Prayer?

  • @kozmusic2 yetu and Yesu are different words. yetu is like @Mnjima said an emphasis for 'our' while Yesu is the swahili word for Jesus.

  • did you say kamehame?

  • @xxbarakaxx Kamehamha lol

  • Always loved this song. All the religious stuff is really man's attempts to come to terms with all the wonders of this reality we are a part of. Whatever your interpretation of it, this universe of ours is amazing.

  • great song

  • Beautiful

  • i didnt say become christian. i said respect others and their religions. cuz ur post offended me.

  • Check out my rendition of Myst III Exile & Zoo Tycoon on piano!

  • This song is so beautiful, it really touched me. I just can't stop listening to it. I think it does not matter if you have or you do not have a religion, but this song is so amazing. One of the best I heard in my life.

  • Used to just sit through the civilization main menu to hear this song then I would freak out. I been looking for this song found it on accident.

  • This song is about more than religion, it is about the brotherhood of man.

I appreciate it and get goosebumps listening to this, even though I'm an Atheist.

  • You always see comments of people saying they get goosebumps, but I actually did, it's so weird :P

  • the song is great, but the meaning is bad. There is no god, people, open your eyes.

  • @noahRKO Look asshole. ITS CALLED RELIGION. IF YOU DON"T WANT TO BELIEVE IT, GO AHEAD. Just don't tell people god doesn't doesn't exist. Because 2 billion people are Christians, AND BELIEVE IN GOD.

  • @randomweirdo1218 Oh man... then why, when 3000 thousand years ago, when egiptians believed in ra and other gods, they felt if they won't worship them, they will die or something. Then, tell me, why, don't we die, now? Becouse we don't believe in them now.

So, sorry for this, dumb little person, open you eyes, becouse you believe in god, and i don't. So whats the difference? haha, i will go to hell!? What a joke.

  • @noahRKO also, i dont know if ur name is noah or not, but if it is, ur name is religious. Again, i dont mind u being atheistic, but other people arent, and would also get offended

  • @randomweirdo1218 Yes it is, my name, that is. So, um, if you got offended, sorry for that, but you just have to see the world that it really is man. i would like to know you age. Maybe, in the future, you will meet a person, who isin't religious, and you will then find out, that both of your lifes are the same man. And don't let your perents to make disisions for you, they made you a chirstan, follow your own path man.

  • @noahRKO my age is not relevant, but I am old enough to make my own decisions. If it helps for you to know, neither of my parents are religious.

  • @noahRKO how are we here? Please explain that. Yes, I am Catholic and I believe in the Big Bang Theory, but after that happened did we just pop up out of the ground? Many scientists believe there is a God, because energy cannot create itself or be destroyed, there had to be a first cause.

  • @thelegend948 I agree with you thelegend948, the science does not explain all. Even the scientists know that. It's the reason of many scientist believe there is a God. No one knows exactly like The Big Bang happened and why. There are many searchs, but it doesn't explain all.

  • @noahRKO It's you who has to open the eyes.

  • @lucaslvarela No, i don't need to. You are whos full of shitty lies. If you believe in him, show me. The first prof you prob. go to is bible. But the bible isin't writen by god. It's writen by human. Who created the believe, to make money.

  • @noahRKO Ok man, I am not here to change you of idea.. Even so my English is not very good, so I have some difficulties in manifesting my ideas. I just don't think the life is so simple like you said, there are more things that we can understand. . For your information I don't read the Bible and I am not very religious. I hardly ever go to the church. I am not fanatic and I don't like who is fanatic. The most important in life is to be happy, be you religious or not.

  • @noahRKO I just thing that it sometimes science can't explain all in life and will never be enough. Ok, the science evolves each day more and more. Even so the science is not enough. It's my opinion. So the important is the respect. Sorry for my first comment.

  • @lucaslvarela you think that some person created everything? That's bullshit. Everything has logical explanation. But we don't have time maschine and can't explane everything to people like you. Chistanity was created by people who wanted money. Jezus, yes, he started, and of course for people to have faith. Later, people started using chistanity for their own needs. Like money.

  • @noahRKO It looks you did no pay atention to what I said.. It doesn't matter.. If you're happy thinking by this way, so continue. I just know it's not what I think.

  • X-) I always liked this music - but it´s a shame - I always thought it was just some kind of babble. I would have never guessed this is a real language. But it´s really beautiful.

  • so beautiful, so universal

  • i gona cry with this music D:

  • Damn did I spend days playing this game..

  • Want to hear this in the chipmunk version?

    /watch?v=ALW0K4Hxo9w
