I knew wolves eat berries. People try to deny this. They try to say that a dog's natural diet should be that of the wolf and that wolves don't eat anything other than meat, organ, and bone. Wrong!
My dog loves to eat raspberries off the bush, too. Every year when they turn ripe I have to give him a few to get started, and after than he's next to me picking his own berries (so I can keep busy picking my own berries). I learned, though, not to try picking and putting in a bowl--he'll just eat them out of the bowl.
@Summers669 you sure about that? i can understand it tasting good and they will eat anything that tastes good, but are you SURE they can't handle berries? I mean coyotes can eat fruits and trash just fine. Dogs can, hell I feed mine apples. Foxes (although they aren't canines...) can. Why not wolves? are wolves really that unadapted? They live anywhere in the world, I am sure they can handle non meats.
@Summers669 they are technically carnivores, but canines... no, canidae (canines and vulpines) are highly adaptive creatures. they won't vomit it up, but they are able to go without animal protien in their diet for a good while. They are not outright omnivores like bears but more able to do this then felines.
The reason why is that with their method of obtaining meat, they may be unable to eat for several days even a week. Fruits are one way to gain energy to survive.
Are they omnivores carnivores or herbivores. because i was told that to be a herbivore is you have only special bacterias that break down vegetation in the lining of your tummy and to be a carnivore is you have special bacteria or fluids that break down meat in your stomach but to be an omnivore like bears is that you have both types of bacterial and fluids in your stomach like bears and i thought that is what canines have and they can adapt to eating plants and fruits only so they don't Hunt!
@Summers669 biologically I beleive they are carnivores, they lack the teeth to be considered a true omnivore, along with many other biological features like intestine length according to my biology teacher.
They are capable of handling an omnivorous diet, dogs more so then wolves, but they still are biologically designed to be Carnivores. going without animal protien for too long causes malnurishment very fast.
I think they have limited amounts of that other enzyme
so they are carnivores but they an also eat and digest fruits and can go without eating meat but they like meat more than fruits but they eat fruits occasionally...hmm..
@Summers669 It's not a matter of liking, it's a matter of needing. You know how even as omnivores humans can't completely digest many vegetables? it's like that in canines but even more so. Then add the fact their teeth aren't designed for grinding plant matter, they basically swallow them whole, with minimal chewing.
They don't get all the nutrition they need from fruits, heck, they probably can't extract the majority of the nutrition a fruit offers. But it provides energy and tastes good.
u misread that. U see, when I said like, i was aiming at the phrase at 'but they like meat more'
It is hard for me to explain in a way to make sense to you in so few words, but if u like cake more then real food like chicken then does that mean u will ALWAYS eat it if there is cake everywhere? maybe u will at first, but after a few cakes u will get sick because your body isnt meant to gain nourishment from it to sustain urself aside from giving you energy. To wolves, berries are cakes.
Nice to see they have a sweet tooth......I have heard that they do this and is nice to see them in action! They are intellegent enough to know the benefits of berries I think. They look like Rosehips???
Ha ha, right after this "beautiful" scene, the next video popped up with the wolves eating a deer with blood dripping off there muzzles. Nature is indifferent, and random and thats OK (although scary) with me.
My black lab loved frozen grapes. Matter of fact that big lug loved everything that you hear people say would kill a dog, including bags of chocolates at a time, and he lived 13 hilarious years.
I think all those rules should be amended for the labs out there, those dogs can eat anything.
If you go to snopes(DOT)com and search for dogs eating grapes, you will find a good article about it, and the dog that was featured in the article was a lab; they're not immune.
I'm glad you had a tough one though, who was a good friend for many years.
They are eating rosehips not raspberries. It's quite surprising that they would eat rosehips as they are incredibly bitter but packed with vitamin C so no doubt very good for growing pups. My dog loves to eat wild raspberries
I had wolf who looooved fruit. Strawberries and bananas were her favorite but also ate mangos, apples, blueberries, even oranges. Vets will lie and discourage it even though it's what they naturally do and enjoy. They seem more like omnivores to me.
im sure even a wolf that finds something meatier would still supplement his diet with plant-food
