The first in Russia carried out 100 and 200 landings on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The experience gained from the tests, further allowed him to develop a methodology and to train front-line pilots the ship's 279 Fighter Regiment technique of landing on an aircraft carrier deck. He was only 51 years.

Kuznetsov is equal to any modern carrier with firepower and defence and soon he will undergo massive overhaul and receives many new systems and capabilties. Also Russia have works for 4 brand new carrier strike groups.

@gsymdzd1 Catapults allow for higher takeoff weights and speeds, which means more fuel and weapons regardless of carrier speed and direction.

Ramps are the easy but far less capable solution. Russia will never be able to operate something like a E-2 Hawkeye because it lacks a cato system. Not a problem as long as all you want to do is operate relatively lightweight fighters as fleet defense, big problem if you ever want to use them in a strike capacity.
