The guard has levers to operate semaphore signals on the roof to signal the driver when pushing. The guards at Sandaoling have it easier than flagmen at Zhalai Nuer open cast mine in the far north east of China. It is much colder there, down to minus 30C but the flagmen sit on top of the coal or spoil on the last wagon with red and green flags. Their only protection is a heavy coat.
