Umm also another question...how many computers/render farms do you have in your ILM headquarters? and what is the spec inside? since i believe that by looking at Pirates 3 that must have took large amount of memory and render time.
@MJGVFX As noted previously, we use our own proprietary fluid dynamics system which sits atop of, and heavily extends, Stanford's PhysBAM library- physbam.stanford.edu Navier-Stokes is at it's core.
@DeonelKumara Correct. We use our own proprietary fluid dynamics system which sits atop of, and heavily extends, Stanford's PhysBAM library- physbam.stanford.edu
i want to ask what is the name of the program in a university that if i studied it i will be able to make this computer generated imagery like in movies as transformers and pirates
@mrtarek171 There is no single program that will give you everything your after however I would suggest you focus on one area, say compositing, animation or modeling & lighting and see what your school has to offer. Most likely, the principles learned in one software package can be applied to others.
It's great to see the straight simulations before rendering and comp! There's some lovely details in there. How many GPUs was this split over? How long did a frame take to simulate? What kind of resolutions were you using?
@ILMVisualFX Thanks...but what program you use to make any animations with NVIDIA GPU? I think any Autodesk products ;D //Please answer me at Inbox Message\\
Was realflow used at all or 100% proprietary? Oh and that "John Knoll" character in this video looks totally FAKE - I thought you guys were supposed to be the best :P
@3Daver Realflow was not used - As noted previously, we used our proprietary fluid simulation system co-developed with researchers at Stanford University.
Incredifabulousness! The most meaningfull making-offs I've ever seen, keep them coming guys. If you make a DVD with that stuff, I'm camping at Amazon :)

Like seriously, until now, I thought the Malestrom was created with real water.
Wow astonishing effects!

I have on question do your software for fluid simulations uses Navier-Stokes Equation, FLIP,SPH or volume grids for their simulation ?

@EtienneLF Hard to say since we do not use RealFlow.

To create the maelstrom (physics), ILM used proprietary software or used a commercial software, like the RealFlow? And the render? Mental Ray?
