  • i love squirrels

  • So do I - :)

  • Reminds me of my first squirrel cam. The squirrels gnawed thru a bucket and got at a year's supply of birdseed. I finally turned it into a live webcam.

They'll gnaw down Fort Knox for a nut!

  • Definitely! I've been doing a vertical version of this project that I've had hanging on a clothesline lately. They climb across the thin clothesline and hang upside-down on the bag to rip it apart! They're amazingly strong and agile when it comes to getting food!

I can imagine how surprised you were to see they ate all the seed! I used to run a webcam of my feeder project, but it's been a while since I've run it for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time (the project, not the webcam) lately.

  • Wow! those are some fat squirrels you have there!

  • They're fat because this was shot during the early winter... :) Last winter was amazingly cold, so they put on a little extra weight - they look a lot skinnier now!

  • awesome!

  • Thanks!

  • Another fantastic video!

  • Thanks for saying so, I'm glad you liked it!

  • So what gave you the idea for this project, anyway? If you've already explained it somewhere and I didn't see then obviously I'm a little bit of a dumbass, LOL. But the bag feeder must provide you with so much entertainment.

  • Hehe... that's cool - :) I have more information about it on my website, but the main idea of it is to see how much effort different animals go through to get the food out of the feeder. You can see how their minds work when they need to find a way into the feeder, and it's cool to watch them tearing at it to get a nut out of it. Different animals have different approaches to the feeder, some are more determined than others, it's just a fun project! Hehe... and it's definitely entertaining!

  • Zach I just want to take a sec to Thank You for all you do for animals! Your respect and appreciation for them is obvious, your work with them to be commended!

  • Thank you very much for saying so! Sorry I didn't notice this comment until today, YouTube forgot to let me know on that one - :)

  • Oops, in my previous Pending comment, I meant, Humane Traps, not human traps.

  • If that helps, than more power to you - I've heard from quite a few people that removing an animal from an area doesn't really help all that much, because more animals will just move in to take it's place, but if that's working for you, that's great!

Hehe... despite all of the crap squirrels can do (and do) I still choose to keep them around - ;)

  • I agree, squirrels get a bad rap-stories of them invading attics, chewing up all the cables on ones house and carrying rabies and deer ticks are spread through generations! Yet the fact remains, squirrels are not predators to anything, they simply try to Survive once they are born!

I solve the 'problem' of them 'getting into things' by putting out a simple bird feeder of basic seed for them to mess with.

I have fed several generations by hand-they all come down from the trees when I call them.

  • I've got quite a few that have been coming to the door lately! I had one this morning that climbed up to the bannister, propped himself up against the window and looked in to see if there was someone there! I haven't tried feeding them by hand yet, but it looks like it could be fun - if you're careful (my mother got bit by a squirrel trying that once - they can't help it if a peanut looks the same as a finger - :)) Squirrels can damage and invade a house, but not EVERY squirrel does...

  • I hear people worry about the 'attic' factor and tales abound, yet I have enjoyed squirrels for over 30 yrs and never had a problem nor know of anyone that did. The 'horror stories' go around including rabies, deer ticks etc. Not saying there have not been cases but like any tragedy story we may know stories but not anyone in our lifetime.

I am convinced squirrels get a bad rap, are easy to pick on yet they hurt no one intentionally. They only try to survive & have predators on land & air.

  • Zach-I talked in the past to a wildlife agent who's wife rescued squirrels & they respond to the human voice. When I started I wore a leather glove (more for their lil hands that they cup on your finger) & used the longest peanuts (bulk you can pick the 3 in a pod) they will shield with their tale & creep toward your hand, I rest it on the door stoop to remain still.

Keep talking soft & calm, they will eventually grab it and run-After this isn't a threat they will relax & take it calmly n pause.

  • Very cool! I'll have to try that some time, it does look like it would be fun to do! A lot of animals get a bad rap because they don't necessarily do what people want them to do (a raccoon raiding a trashcan, a gull taking food out of someone's hand), but they're just being what they are. We've had squirrels that do a little damage here and there, never had the attic issue, but they have burrowed into a car once... :), they're just trying to find nesting spots... but I still like them!

  • Hi Tab, I love your vids man, but Squirrels, they're actually very hazardous. They'll break into your house, tear up the screen, borrow through the walls, and chew on the cables outside.

I used to like squirrels, but found out the hard way they were more like violent fat suburban rats. I use those human traps and move em away from my house, a couple miles away, though some states (Mass & CT) you can't (DEC Laws).

  • Hehe "violent fat suburban rats" - didn't you use to say for the longest time that you were sad that you didn't get them very often...? I know all of that, and they have done some of that to me as well (especially the cables, we've had to have cables replaced on more than one occasion), but I still choose to like them - they're animals, they're going to screw things up occasionally, but it's not as if they have some vendetta or something against human dwellings, they're just trying to exist.

  • Actually, now that I think about it, it wasn't you that was sad that you didn't get them very often, it was someone else that I talked to before... hehe - I got people mixed up! :)

  • This video is so impression!

Also, I love your camera with HD!

  • Thanks! I have another one to release soon - I have a non-tethered version of the feeder project (it's literally just a piece of foam and a bag, but not bunkered down to anything, so it's free to move around) and the squirrels reaction to it - it's cool to see how they react to that version, it's a little more difficult for them to get ahold of! :)

The cam is awesome too - I need to upload more of my HD stuff here soon - :)

  • Welcome!!!

Ah, sure that no problem so I will keep my eye sharp watch when you make new video come out to release then I will watch for that!

Of course, your cam is so fantastic and impress but I know that those are so expensive for that...but you are so lucky because were already to bought them... :)

  • Agree, he gets the best video I've seen of wildlife.

  • Thank you very much for saying so! I have video I shot recently in 60p that I need to release soon - it's the same project, but recorded with twice as fluid motion - very cool stuff, now I just need to get my #$ together and release it - :)

  • LMAO, everyone knows me as Youtube's "Mad Editor", and I have to say this video almost had me in tears from laughing so hard. Not only are the squirrels adorable, the editing is nothing short of superb. I am definitely subscribing.

  • Wow! Thanks for the ringing endorsement! I'm glad you like it! :) Thanks for the subscription - I have quite a few crazy squirrel videos! I stopped by your channel, I have to check it out more when I get the time to - for years I've been doing weird edits of things for myself, but I found out about YT Poop last Summer by accident. I don't really want to release anything of mine on my channel, but I love creative YTPs - it's cool when someone can take a piece and completely twist it around!

  • I bet your YTPs are awesome, too. But I subscribed for another reason, too: to learn from you. I just recently became an amateur bird-watcher and I was looking for cool videos to see how different people arranged their "backyard habitats". I have quite an assortment of animals in my yard (among them 9 squirrels, a bunny, and three hawks, plus lots of song birds). I came upon your video of the adorable cardinal and just started watching the rest of your stuff. Glad I found this channel!

  • Oh, very cool! It's a very cool experience once you get started checking different kinds of birds and animals out. I'm definitely not an expert bird ID'er, but I love seeing new kinds of birds come around. My habitat is basically a standard suburban backyard, with the addition of my bag feeder project (which makes it a *little* different :)), I don't get a lot of wildlife here, but you don't really need to go to an exotic place to appreciate the wildlife you have around you!

  • Thanks! I love capturing vocalizations - this one definitely didn't disappoint! :) The most vocal squirrel was very interesting, it had red ear tufts, something grey squirrels typically don't have! Maybe it was a hybrid red/grey squirrel!

  • Those are some huge critters! Are they able to climb trees?

  • Yep! This winter has been a very brutal one so far - the last few weeks have been either close to freezing or below it, so I'm assuming they really packed the pounds on to stay them through the cold winter months. They don't eat as much during a normal year, but this year it almost seems to be a necessity!

    Thanks for the comment! :)

  • Cool! We still get squirrels when we have warm days!

  • Very cool - we've been getting them a lot lately and it's been nothing close to warm here... :) I believe we have around 10-12 squirrels living in our area now!

  • Great squirrels! We don't have too many in our neighborhood, too many cats... :(

  • Thanks! Oh yeah? We've got a ton of squirrels in our neighborhood, but you know what we have none of? Coons... :( I've never seen one raccoon anywhere close to where I live! I'm just lucky that I have a friend that lets me set cameras up in an area that *does* have them! :)

  • Love the watch in HQ option now Utube has.

    hah, great project...gotta love HD.

As I said before, my next cam is def an HD!

    Great shots too man!

We have 5 squirrels I watch in our backyard. I was real close ot one, screaming at me while I was taping the Chickadees up close.

  • Oh yeah?? Hehe... that's cool! :) They usually do that when they're trying to warn other squirrels about something they don't want in their territory. I'm glad you liked the video! HD is *definitely* awesome - I should re-upload some of my raccoon HD sessions in the new HD format! I want to make a compilation of un-released raccoony footage sometime soon, but I need time to edit it first... :)

  • Yep, I hear em all the time. Sounds like a plan!

  • you're hd is nice and sharp!

  • Thanks! I had to fiddle with the settings to get it to work the way I wanted it to... The video was originally shot in 1080i, edited in Final Cut Pro 5, exported to a tape and recaptured as a .ts file (mainly because I kept getting bizarre glitches when I did QuickTime exports) and then re-compressed to 720p via MPEG Streamclip @ 12Mbps...

  • WOW you put a lot of hard work into this HD it was great !!!100%love the video5/5***** BUT I WANT AN HD CAMERA NOW !!!!:)LOL

  • Thanks! I'm glad you like it! Hehe... I'm sure you'll get one soon! :) HD is an awesome format for nature videography - you can see every little hair and whisker on a squirrel or raccoon, every single feather on a gull's head - it's awesome! Standard definition isn't dead yet though! :)

  • It be mine they, are saying :-D

  • Yep! Exactly!

  • errr, i don't know why i can't punctuate...

'it be mine,' they are saying.

  • Cool squirrels!

    Still no dove mob? ;-D

  • Thanks! Nah, I haven't even *seen* a dove in the last few months! It has been massively cold, maybe they'll come back around in the Spring...

...now a Gull mob I may be able to do - :)

  • I love this video! Watching it in HD quality is amazing! Those look like some fat, well fed squirrels... ha! ha! Keep up the excellent videos!!!

  • Thanks Marguerite! They're definitely well fed! :) I'm glad you liked the video! I need to do more HD videos... soon - :)

  • Wow! I love this project and your stuff just gets better and better! Fabulous HD!

  • Thanks!! As soon as I saw I could publish HD videos, I wanted to find one to test it with... it just happened I was working on a squirrel edit at the time! When I get a chance, I need to pull some old HD raccoony clips and make a "HD Sampler" edit (check my "Coming soon teaser" video, at around :48 - that's the best HD shot I've captured yet!) I'm glad you like the feeder project and the video!

  • Love it.. what great footage and quality.. Looks good ... odd looking squirrel...

  • Thanks for saying so! I'm glad you liked it! Which squirrel is the odd looking one? :) There was one with red squirrel-like ear tufts, I found him interesting! That was the one that was vocalizing the most throughout the video!

  • Yes the ear tufts... Ive not seen a squirrel like that before.. Perhaps it was a high society squirrel! :0)LOL

Hey.. Have a great Christmas and New Year...

    :0)

  • You too! Hopefully it was a good one! I've been having a really hectic last few weeks! :) I haven't seen a squirrel like that before either - as soon as I noticed the tufts, I tried to get as much footage of him as possible! Definitely made easier by the fact that the squirrel in question was a camera hog to begin with - :)

  • Well let us know if you figure out that squirrel is some odd breed and not just having a bad fur day! LOL Ive seen squirrels in other countries like Norway and things that have tufted ears but those are very exaggerated much more than your squirrel...

Well thanks for posting.. Hope you had good Holidays!

  • Can you try to make some opossum videos for me Zach?

  • Oooooooooh! Opossums! Yes, definitely - I'll do that next! Sorry about that, it completely slipped my mind! I have all kinds of opossum stuff I haven't released yet, so I'll get on that very soon!

  • hahahaha....AWESOME vid my friend,...now what could they be gibberin' about in squirrelese? Peanuts are mighty tasty but they should only be for ME! Sounds like they're poutin',no? *****

  • Hehe... definitely! It's MIIIIINE! :) The tufted Grey squirrel (well, the Grey squirrel *with* the tufts) was definitely the most vocal one! He (she?)'s the dominant squirrel, and it wants everyone to know it!

  • What a beautiful, fat boy he is! :-D This is shot so well! Thx!

  • You're welcome! Thank you! Did you notice the ear tufts on the vocalizing squirrel? I've never noticed tufts like that on a Grey squirrel before! Definitely an interesting visitor!

  • Wow, your squirrels look huge!

    Very fun video!

    5/5

  • Thanks for saying so! I'm glad you liked it! They are pretty large - part of that is coming into their winter coats, and the other part of it is... they get a lot of peanuts... :)

  • Yes, december squirrels: fat and furry!!!

Love to see them jump around.

  • Me too! They're definitely growing into their winter coats now! Something tells me, between the fat squirrels and the equally fat coons at my taping site, it's going to be a looong winter... :)

  • they sure tore your feeder up!! very cute. and very cool in HD!! thank you!

  • You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it! I need to upload some more HD productions of mine... it would be nice if YouTube would let you re-upload some old videos, but that's not a feature yet...

Gotta love the destructive squirrels! :)

  • Another great video...

  • Thanks Tom! I'm glad you liked it!

  • Howdy partner lol! Love to see these squirrels!

  • Hey! Me too! We've had a lot of them around this year, but I haven't had a lot of time to tape them lately... :( This recording is from 3 weeks ago, Monday - December 1st...

  • the fact that you got different camera angles, mikrophones and these awesome little guys struggling for food, makes it allways very interesting to watch your videos.but i can´t see no snow there.don´t you live in a cold part of america?at least, the flying one at 0:35 was fun to watch.

  • I love that shot! He just comes out of nowhere, doesn't he? :) I'm glad you liked the video! I am in a snowy part of the US, PA, but we haven't had a lot of snow lately... a little here and there, but nothing like some other people have been getting lately!
