Seems like todays "country" is sooo hollow and without any real feeling in the lyrics and its artists. I sooo wish there would be a TRUE country music revival.
Turnipman, They're all making songs in a studio with all special effects. Very few of them today can actually sing. I'll always be a Merle, Buck, Jones, Hank, And all the good old boys. Loved Waylon.
My mother in law and I would listen to Hag and swear if he wrote about toliet paper we would listen. Then we would laugh our butts off. RIP Ginny. I am still listening
Its so true and sad there will not be country music like this at a mass level. Its still out there, but its difficult to find. It requires going to endless local small venue shows.
For simplistic beauty, this song, and "Somewhere Between", were Merle's finest accomlishments. The stunningly beautiful harmony work of Bonnie Campbell, her name she was born with, will never be equalled, RIP Bonnie, and God Bless you Mr. Haggard, pay close attention you slags in Trashville, TN, this is REAL Country Music, not the vomit you clowns are trying to pass of as such these days.
@expresionest Oh yes there will be. i may be a youngin but Im bringing it back. I just started writing. wish me a broken leg that I pull it off hehehe
Every voice that has tried to come on the country scene in the last forty years, has been judged by this voice. " Is he as good as Merle Haggard ?" By far the best male country voice to ever hit Planet Earth, followed real close by Marty Robbins.
all you beat boxing ,raptard fuck nuggets LISTEN .. you hear this ? .. this is ( MUSIC ) .. and that guy up there sitting ^^ ...... he is ( SINGING ) .... Amazing !!! isn't it .......
I love this song and it brings back so many many good memories of happier times. It does not get any better than Merle Haggard, Charlie Rich, Dolly, Tammy. Country is just straight from the heart...
I grew up listening to merle haggard on my dads record player. My momma would play john denver and the eagles on her casset player but when dinner was being made the kitchen was filled with haggards voice and all the kids knew it was time for dad to come home. These songs will always have a place in my heart.
Hadn't thought of this song in years then my Dad sang it in the hospital shortly before he passed away. Now it will be a part of me for as long as I live. I love and miss you Dad.
Thanks Stalker. My Dad passed away early Easter morning this year with family at his side. We were real close and I sure do miss him. I appreciate your comment.
Thats is one bad boy. Grew up listening to him and we cant get enough of him.... Man does his songs bring back memories from even my childhood throughout the rest of my past 45 years.... Love ya merle, thanks for all your music...
Well partner, check out Jamey Johnson and Ryan Bingham. They are both excellent singer/songwriters, but I don't know if I can say that either one of them is as good as Merle was. I don't know if there will ever be another that can write as good as Merle.

In his early days, Merle Haggard was the greatest songwriter in the world of country music. With this song, Mama Tried, The Lonesome Fugitive, I Threw Away the Rose, Branded Man, and so many others. True greatness.
@ianwalkerdownland oh come on man waylon had more number one hits and a way bigger fanbase and basically paved the way for ppl like merle.look it up and see who had the first triple platinum record in nashville!!!!!!!!!!
@waylonlover859 i may be wrong but was waylon even playing country professionally when merle was having hits in the 60s? he played bass with buddy holly up until 60ish and never had any country fame until at least the 70s so im not sure how he could have paved the way for Merle. if anything it was the other way around
@silowhore never had any country fame til the seventies he had the first triple platinum album in nashville come get your facts straight before you try to state them
@waylonlover859 you might go to legacy recordings and look up Waylon my friend, i never said he wasn't playing, he was a professional musician from 50s onward but he never had any real country success until the 70s, it's clearly stated in the first few lines of his bio
