search nicolas and the iceni narrow road. they write beautiful music which has echoes of glass. Great choreography in this production. a job well done.
I did a contemporary piece to this music in my undergrad. The choreographer, Yin Mei, molded a beautiful piece of art, not only in the movement and her choreography, but by using this music.
I remember in rehearsal for that piece I was so consumed by the music and the dancing that I started to cry. I'll never forget that. Thank you Yin Mei and Mr. Glass.
@fredchiwas I have to agree. I don't think the choreography fits the music. However, we don't know what the choreographer was going for; obviously, it worked for him or her.
The movement and choreography is lovely, but I don't agree with this music choice.
@6ollie66 I don't with agree that this choreographer(y) failed. Many choreographers create abstract pieces that may mean one thing to the artist and dancers, but a completely different thing to the audience. A choreographer can choose to create a dance that is not to make sense to the audience at all. It is like listening to another language that is unfamiliar; just because it doesn't make sense to the listener doesn't mean that the speaker is failing at what he/she is conveying.
@bkmac10 So, ... let me get this right, ... the composer creates a dance to be understood ONLY by his/her 's dancers? ... and not the audience? Are we to appreciate a group masturbation? My ONLY gripe is, that the choreographer used a highly emotive and concrete piece to ..... I believe it to be dishonest.
@thebishiestalker Yes, that was a moment I remember very vividly. I was saying to myself while watching it, "Oh, do it again...come on, use repetition!" LOL It is such a beautiful moment.
In my humble opinion this concerto will fall into the same category as the Brahms, Bach, Beethoven. In the movie The Hours it was used most impressively. As a concerto, it can stand alone.
After the 3rd couple (and a great dance pair at that!)
I had my idea of what this song was about: Relationships. The birth, the during, the end of relationship/love, and the after... What do you guys think about it?
At the age of 17 i rarely find classical that music excites me, but i was recently sleeping on a long distance journey, well i was sleeping until i heard this music on the radio. its beautiful, Glass is so talented. Its so much emotion. its like a story rolled into 10 minutes of bliss!
thank you for muting the terrible noise of RnB for a while! Fan! x
the third movement is amazing the second more known. It is this concerto that condenses more than than any other the experience of humanity in the late 20th Century. Like all Genius he's often way off and some pieces are fillers but when he's on the ball its heart stopping music. Glass is a contemporary genius.
The consistency with which people produce great works and the proportion of "fillers" vary from so-called genuis to so-called genius. Glass produces more "fillers" than average, I'd say. And it seems horribly inflated to say this is the best condensation of "the experience of humanity in the late 20th century." The dominant position of contemporary cultural theorists is that there is no unified experience of humanity; the postmodern condition is an endless proliferation of differences.
The choreography was pretty bland I thought, and I didn't like the female dancers' dresses - they weren't flattering and did not suit the music. The music however - was AWESOME - that was the best part.
Sorry - I probably should've stated that in my opinion (not to offend anyone else) that I didn't really feel anything from the dancers' steps despite them being technically fabulous.I loved the music - so don't get me wrong, I didn't intend to come across that rude. But as a personal preference I felt the female's dresses did not flatter their physique & if I were to stage my own version of that piece I would've had them in closer fitting garments with entirely different choreography altogether.
In addition - when I mean the dancers being "technically fabulous" I mean that their classical dance technique is very polished and for the most part, very clean.
All right, now that you explain it better I feel like you make some good points. The music is marvelous indeed (as are the other movements of this violin concerto) and yes, I think it would lend itself perfectly to a more theatrically inspired choreography in which the dancers are given a more active and expressive role
I'm glad that's resolved - I really should sit back and think about what words I use before I press "post comment" because I'm prone for misunderstandings - dreadful fault of mine.
Wow. Absolutely fantastic! The composer is just legend and the dancing wow. I don't know a lot about ballet but when the dancers do the mannequin/doll act I love it!!!
The ache and despair of mankind, the grief and saddness..The violin. Still it reaches up to the heavens to be heard by the creater, and we are found again. If you have ears listen....watch
I think one day phillip glass is going to confound the whole of humanity on his deathbed by saying that all his pieces are interpretations of the same piece
it might just be my ignorance, not knowing a thing about dancing, but i always find that when people dance to this kind of slow music, they use a lot of large fast mouvements that don't seem to fit the piece. but then, i know nothing about dance. love the piece though!
The only thing that's bad about this song is playing it. I'm a second violin and we're playing it for our upcoming concert. Those "lovely" repetitive notes are the same four measures...over and over and over again for an entire ten minutes. We have to trade off every now and then cause those are all triplets in second position with a lot of pinky action and damn does it make your hand hurt. Wonderful dancing though XD
i don't understand anything about dancing, but of music;) i like philip glass very much, his music is just a compilation of differnt feelings and colours... its great... Playing this concert in an orchestra feels so good...
Amazing piece of music. I first heard it about a month ago around midnight-perfect time for a song like this. The ending is the best, those repetitive notes are almost haunting, as is you're in a cold, old house that nobody's lived in for years. My epitome of polyphony! Violin Concerto 2, I believe.
Love the music, without doubt. The dancers are wonderful. The backdrop..get rid of it..put up something different..or nothing at all...it distracts from the artistry of the dancers with the music. If wanting a background..what about the "changing of the seasons"? or some specific "theme"?
bravo mona!

the choreography was GORGEOUS... unfortunately, i agree that the music seems haphazardly placed over the movement... there seems to be a disconnect.
also, the women's outfits were horrible and obfuscated their gorgeous lines.
