As an Italian American with some roots in Bushwick it depresses me to see mostly black and latino youth and men on corners with their pants hanging down which they call this the style. I have lived in Murray Hill for 15 years in a small walk-up and over the last 5 years I have gotten priced out of my neighborhood by luxury condos & rentals. So I saved and saved and now I can afford to put a down payment on a small studio in Bushwick. I'd love to live in Greenpoint or Williamsburg, but they are simply unaffordable. But hey, I'm going to be on my way to owning something, and it's a step up. I'm white, but no hipster, and for me, Bushwick is the land of opportunity.
i am someone who grw up in Bushwick and am white. I lived there before it was Latino and Black. It was once mostly Italian-American with German-Americans up by Ridgewood. But one minor criticism, at the start of the Documentary you stated that in the past 15 years Bushwicks population was mainly blacks, south americans, Jamaicans, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans, but you left out Dominicans, which are larger in number than Mexicans in this community.

Bushwick used to be a integrated neighborhood. Then the feds got involved and flipped it into a racilally homogenous neighborhood with their faux integration urban renewal. The Italians and Germans were ethnically cleansed from Bushwick in the 1970's. They were moved out via housing projects, blockbusting and cheap mortgages in the suburbs were they were Americanized. Now the people behind that ethic cleansing want to cleanse this poor working class Hispanic and blacks from Bushwick.

Bootleg, what about the cops who work at precincts that are completely poor. Brownsville Brooklyn for example, the cops work very hard there my friend. I spent 3 years there and that is one tough neighborhood. The residents that are working decent people have tough time day to day. in the same time period...brooklyn had a poverty rate of about 40%, bronx had almost 70% and queens had under 10%. in reality queens doesn't even need gentrification. queens is just like staten island and nassua county only a little bit more urban and diverse. LOL, queens is just a giant suburb. eastern nassua county as far as i care.
like i said though, gentrification isn't as noticeable in queens because queens was never that bad. in the late 80's brooklyn and the bronx both had a median income of less than $30,000 while queens was more than $40,000. in the same time period, brooklyn had a murder rate of 40 something and the bronx had one almost at 60. and queens was just barely over 15.

I have lived in Murray Hill for 15 years in a small walk-up and over the last 5 years I have gotten priced out of my neighborhood by luxury condos & rentals. So I saved and saved and now I can afford to put a down payment on a small studio in Bushwick. I'd love to live in Greenpoint or Williamsburg, but they are simply unaffordable. But hey, I'm going to be on my way to owning something, and it's a step up. I'm white, but no hipster, and for me, Bushwick is the land of opportunity.

i am someone who grw up in Bushwick and am white. I lived there before it was Latino and Black. It was once mostly Italian-American with German-Americans up by Ridgewood. The issue of gentrification is an economic one. I am disgusted at rents that are sky high and the fake hipsters who are totally conformist thinking they are so cool. 1. The neighborhoods that typically gentrify have its original owners pushed out from a lack of stable rent and soon the neighborhood rapidly changes.
2. On the other hand, the neighborhoods that gentrify typically are run-down and riddled with crime.
Neighborhoods constantly change. It's a shame, and a blessing at the same time.

Bushwick used to be a integrated neighborhood. Then the feds got involved and flipped it into a racilally homogenous neighborhood with their faux integration urban renewal. The Italians and Germans were ethnically cleansed from Bushwick in the 1970's. They were moved out via housing projects, blockbusting and cheap mortgages in the suburbs were they were Americanized. Now the people behind that ethic cleansing want to cleanse this poor working class Hispanic and blacks from Bushwick.

its really sad that this spawned such a hate fueled racial debate in the comments section (as it was bound to do). the real problem has nothing to do with race, it has to do with the grossly inflated housing market. the cost/standard of living in new york / brooklyn is sickening and nobody wins except the slumlords collecting half of your paycheck every month. Bootleg, what about the cops who work at precincts that are completely poor. Brownsville Brooklyn for example, the cops work very hard there my friend. I spent 3 years there and that is one tough neighborhood. The residents that are working decent people have tough time day to day. If you want a nice neighborhood you have to work with the police sometimes.

The reason the people are not going to like the police presence is because the police don't work for the poor. They tend to be racist and/or ethnocentric. The idea that cops in the current age in NYC (and most of the country) just do their job 100% honest is not correct. Stats and studies and histroy shows different. The cops will be there for the people in the expensive apts, NOT for the poor there.

Well, let me tell you something, we are the kind of latinos that work hard, go to school, and don't complaint when the rents rise but instead save money and buy a piece of land. All my family members above 30 own a property so none of my mom friends will end up homeless. I'm definitely not standing up for the hipsters by any means, and I hate the idea of gentrification, but the people arguing on these comments almost seem like they're bragging about how much crime there used to be in their neighborhood. Crime is bad, last time I checked. It seems like people have been calling Ridgewood and other neighborhoods in Queens "soft." Personally, I'd like to live in a place where I don't have to worry about getting mugged or stabbed every day.

the bronx: 54.2
manhattan: 33.8

almost all of north BK is the ghetto, and like i said, even williamsburg. graffiti everywhere, trash, old and abandoned buildings etc. remember, brownsville had a higher murder rate in 2008 than it did in 95'. ENY had like 30 murders and brownsville had damn near 40. look it up. even in south bk around coney island is run down. only place ive EVER seen in QU that can compare to north bk, is parts of elmhurst, THATS IT. uptown, bk, bx go hard. fuck queens home of the queens.

in the same time period...brooklyn had a poverty rate of about 40%, bronx had almost 70% and queens had under 10%. in reality queens doesn't even need gentrification. queens is just like staten island and nassua county only a little bit more urban and diverse. LOL, queens is just a giant suburb. eastern nassua county as far as i care.

like i said though, gentrification isn't as noticeable in queens because queens was never that bad. in the late 80's brooklyn and the bronx both had a median income of less than $30,000 while queens was more than $40,000. in the same time period, brooklyn had a murder rate of 40 something and the bronx had one almost at 60. and queens was just barely over 15.

Back then Brooklyn was 2.5x more "rough/hood than QUeens.
Bronx was 2.0 more " " than QUeens.
You have to understand 2 things.
1. Certain areas of QUeens are simply longisland but are included in QUeens. Everything east of Francis Lewis boulevard is basically Long Island
2. QUeens is FILLED with illegal immigrants who arent included in any statistic.
