I remember "Jerry's Disco" teens would have so much fun there back in the late 70's to the very early 80's. They would play..."Come To Me", by France Joli"...great memories...
You think your going out of your mind when you ask your sisters if they remember this guy and the phrase "whats the story" I was really little but its still in my head. Now FINALLY I have found it and I guess I am still crazy but I know I really saw it. Man its great to track these things down from ones youth. Like I remember "Koogla" peanutbutter, in chocolate, vinilla, bananna etc. mom never would let me get it, Here comes Koogla with the Koog Koog Koogily eyes! or something to that effect.
here's the genesis of the tag line from a '74 article:
Rehearsing the commercial, Jerry Rosenberg asked a moonlighting policeman to sit down and listen to a typical customer. The policeman said, "All right, so what's the story, Jerry?" Staring hard at the man, Mr. Rosenberg broke out in a grin and said: "I like it. Let's use it."
Sure, I remember those ads! And when Jerry raised his hands at the end to say, "that's the story!" his belly would show under his shirt. really funny...we used to imitate those ads affectionately as kids.
@scottnownow I also remember that commercial when I was a child, I was 4yrs old @ the time and also imitated Jerry. My father (RIP) laughed & thought I was cute when I imitated him.
WOW! I cant believe you found this!!! I used to go to elementary school with Jerry's son Jeffery at PS 169 in Bay Terrace. Jerry came and gave all of us kids in the class a t-shirt and an autographed pic! I loved his commercials!
Damn! Though I don't recall this particular one, you couldn't miss Jerry's JGE commercials during the '70s. My brothers and I always went around saying "That's the story!!!" back then.
Yesterday, for some unknown reason,Whats the story,Jerry popped into my head.I asked all my coworkers, who are int heir 20's,so of course, none of them knew it.Thanks for clearing it up for me.
I loved the JGE 'what's the story' TV ads. I later became a union member-too bad JGE was gone by then. I must've missed the disco ad (not that I would've went, as I was a full-fledged punk rocker at the time). great memories!
JGE Electronics (the "JGE" stood for Jamaica Gas & Electric). He was to the viewer's right while the JGE sign (typeset, from what I recall, in Standard Bold a.k.a. Akzidenz-Grotesk Bold) was to the viewer's left.
He was my father in law. He did the commercials himself when the ad company he hired didn't produce to his liking. He wasn't an actor, just a regular guy and felt he could do the ads the best of anyone... and he did!
"When you come to JGE, you get the best deals..." etc, etc. I loved when he approached the camera as if the door were locked and couldn't get out. He turned up everywhere, commercials, telethons, you name it. He must have a been a riot to hang with. Fond memories for sure.

I remember when JGE had a jewelry store-- the commercial was a big musical production number, which was very different from the regular JGE ads!

JGE Electronics (the "JGE" stood for Jamaica Gas & Electric). He was to the viewer's right while the JGE sign (typeset, from what I recall, in Standard Bold a.k.a. Akzidenz-Grotesk Bold) was to the viewer's left.

He had a heart attack and wasn't in great health for many years after that.. it wasn't all on purpose. He was my father-in-law.
